"Gook runes" are functionally just like pretty skins for words, "studying" them is worthless. You automatically acquire the overall shape just by reading, and looking up the word if you don't know/remember/recognize it. And you also automatically acquire their meaning/reading like that too, so you may understand and be able to read new words, all without ever studying any kanji.
Listening is good, but the bulk of your learning will be carried by reading (and looking up words). Spoken Japanese uses a more restricted vocabulary, it particularly cuts down on Chinese-derived words. And it's also less convenient to look up words.

I used Anki, I hated it but when I started out I did 10 words a day of vocab on top of a lot of daily reading and I think it helped me. Simply use anki to facilitate the initial step of learning some new words, don't bother with reviews past like the first day, and then go directly into reading stuff. The frequency illusion will do most of the work for you and you'll immediately notice a difference in how much you know. Frontier is a good contender. It's the first title dualtail went with such a grand scale design. You can see they haven't ironed out all the kinks yet, but you can appreciate how they improved on it in the following games.
