She had stayed out far too late. It was nearly dawn, how long had she spent in the village?

Reimu crossed over the Scarlet Lake on her way home, a bag full of food clutched in her arms. She’d have to be fast if she wanted to get any sleep at all.

“Ara ara, you’re up late, aren’t you?” A horizontal gap had opened up in the middle of nowhere beside here, matching her pace.

”Oh? I could say the same thing about you, Yukari. You’re usually not up until it’s time to go to sleep again.” Yukari looked hurt at this, leaning over towards Reimu with eyes wide open.

“How cruel… and here I was hoping for a nice chat with my favourite shrine maiden…” Yukari moved away as Reimu swiped at her ineffectually.
“I just wanted to know how you’ve been doing, that’s all. You’ve become distant to almost everyone, Reimu.”

”Everyone? Pfhah! All worthless. Who’s there to take note of? Suika’s gone off again, and it’s not like we want any more company.”

“Even Marisa?”

”Especially Marisa. If I ever see that black and white witch again I’ll kill her myself.”
Reimu’s hand clenched, squeezing the bag. In the night sky, one could imagine the liquid dripping out was almost black.

“And you’re just as bad. If you really cared, you’d be helping us instead of doing.. whatever you do.”

Yukari sighed. “I preferred the old you,” she said querulously. “Before all this happened.”

“What, weak? I’ve become so much more. Unlike you.. you’ve become pathetic, Yukari. Ever since Ran died and Chen left you, you’ve become little more than a wizened half-figure that stalks through the night. What happened? You were one of the great powers, once. What happened?”

Yukari didn’t say anything. After a few seconds, Reimu looked back and saw the gap had vanished, back to wherever it came from. She shrugged, putting the gap youkai out of her mind as she came in to land, her black-bat wings unfolding to brake her descent.

She stepped through the ruins of the Scarlet Devil Mansion carefully, trying not to break anything further. Reimu had only bothered repairing a couple of rooms; with everyone else dead, there wasn’t such a need for such a large estate.
A small form lay recumbent on the bed, and she gently shook it, waking it up.
“R-reimu? I was having a terrible nightmare.. Flandre went berserk and killed everyone, and I, I-“ A tear dripped from Remilia’s eye as she looked up at the ex-shrine maiden.
“Shh, shh, mistress. It was just a dream. Look, I’ve got some food for us, is that ok?” Reimu took the chunk of flesh out from the paper bag, and the two vampires fed.

”Where’s Sayuk-“ The vampire barely protested as she was pushed gently back onto the bed.
“Go back to sleep, Mistress. Sleep.” A quick chant and a seal, and the older vampire was already yawning.
“Rei- Reimu.. would you please say my name..? Pleas-ahh…”

Reimu pulled the blanket back over the tiny figure. It was daytime, and it’d be hard to move around. Still, there were things to be done. It was going to be a long day…
