Despite it being a joke post, I've really been thinking about that ''Who is miss Umineko'' question. It comes down to either Beato/Sayo or Ange and after thinking about it for a couple days I can see a lot of arguments for both but I'm still inclined to believe the latter is more appropriate considering she is who the whole story really revolved around, even if Sayo lies at the core of it. I guess it kind of depends on who resonates more with you personally. Sayo gives birth to the idea of magic and eventually it's passed on to Ange once she learns to understand it, completing the idea Sayo started. When Sayo eventually collapsed under the pressure of her circumstances, she chose to live as fiction in memory of the living, aka Ange. Ange is presented with Sayo's story and is trusted to find the meaning within it that'll help her to continue living, which she does in the magic ending, completing the bond of trust between and author and a reader. What I'm trying to say is, one begins the story while the other is trusted to complete it, they are direct parallels of one another but they are also one and the same in the end. I think they're both deserving of the title but if I really have to just pick one, I would still pick Ange. She is the subject of the whole story, the sole reason Sayo's story had to be told in the first place. Imo she's arguably the single most critical character in the narrative and it's why it begins to revolve all around her as soon as she enters it. She embodies the themes of the work more than anyone else at the end and it's why the people that dislike her usually always dislike Umineko as a whole.

Fair enough, I'm not really thinking of the specific criteria Higurashi gives for it since that was more of a joke on R07's end, I'm thinking which character embodies the themes of the work best. Arguably for Higurashi, you could make a case for Mion in that sense considering she embodies the themes of the work more than anyone else right from the beginning and she is a direct foil to the main villain, Takano. Well of course, the point is that she's a pitiful child and desperate to find the truth, but she can't just accept an answer just like that after having longed for it all her life. She tries to but she just can't, she goes through the 5 stages of grief and it takes her a long time just like it takes a lot of readers a long time to understand. The truth ended up not working for her because in reality, that's never what it was about for her, even though she thinks it is. I suppose I can understand finding her cynical and bratty behaviour for most od the story annoying but I feel like it's hard to really hate her character if you like Umineko as a whole.

Many people that disregard the work will tell you it's a shallow motto, but it really is hard to deny it doesn't hold a lot of meaning to many people, and it's incredible central to Umineko's whole narrative to the point it's hard to have a discussion about it without mentioning it. One of the first dialogues about the concept in the vn is that without love, Kanon sees a gray ocean. With love, Shannon sees a blue one. It's meant to represent that seeing life itself with love is what makes someone able to attain happiness, which is what Ange and maria discuss in EP4, however Ange can't recognize said happiness because she is too focused on being stuck in her own misfortune. She doesn't realize that there can be both happiness and misfortune in her life and she is stuck in a binary wordview without love.

How I interpret what Umineko means by looking at things without love is that you stay stuck in one specific view of something without considering other perspectives, mindlessly forcing what you think is right on other people without taking into account the person. A perfect example is how Erika accusses Natsuhi in EP5. It's blatantly obvious that we as the reader know that Natsuhi would never be able to murder her family like that. However, Erika refuses to take that into account, stuck in her own view of the single truth and falsely accussing Natsuhi because of it, believing that she has to be right because she can't see another way and refuses to take other people's view into account. Battler learns that different interpretations and wordlviews should work together to see the whole story, he dissolves himself of the mindset that human explanations have to be good and that they must refute fantasy explanations, which surely have to be bad, and it's how he reaches the truth of the mystery Erika was never able to reach. Ange learns this too at the very end. There can be happiness with misfortune and misfortune with happines, that's why EP8 is called twilight.

When Ange faces the sadness of her family's death, believing that they loved her until the very end, she's able to see happiness beyond it. Without love, she is stuck in a cynical mindset focused on that there is only a single truth where one or more people in her family must be absolute villains that ruined her life. With it, within the infinite perspectives, she attains the love to see the blue in the ocean. Without love it cannot be seen has many different interpretations but Umineko's argument with it is that you can only see a person's true intent if you look at them with empathy and consider why they do the things they do. If you merely judge someone for what you believe their actions to be, without considering how things came to be in the first place, you will never reach an understanding.

(Also, don't misunderstand that Umineko believes itself to be absolutely right in this regard. Many people claim Umineko isn't for everyone because this mindset won't work for absolutely everyone; Not everyone can conform to the same idea, that's how philosophy works, but it's the stance the work itself takes. I used to think ep 8 of Umi was a little pointless, but the more I think of it and have it pointed out to me the more it lines up perfectly with the overarching story, and concludes it wonderfully.
I think it's a valid compliment to the story that it deals just enough of it's cards to keep things going without ever quite telling you enough to make it totally certain what happened.

I've sung the praises of EP8 before because I think the way it wraps up Ange's story is incredibly heartwarming, however I do think it drops a lot of nuance in comparison to other chapter. It's still a wonderful chapter and it gives a very touching conclusion to Ange's journey as a character which means a lot to me personally, but it does have some shortcomings IMO.
