"oh, so you travel a lot?. tell me about it?" んです always refers to some prior context or background info whether it is new information or a question doesn't matter. you're either explaining a situation or asking about an existing information. it is also used to an an explantion のです。

this is why i said i didn't think it was taught as early as n5. it is not curcial to understand the core message of sentence or question but hard to feel the difference in nuance for beginners. but learning eventually when to use it is however absolutely crucial for sounding natural
