For example, 今日　is 今　and 日 put together but pronounced differently. 今 means now and 日 means sun. Knowign what each means, we can figure out the meaning without the pronunciation. It means the now sun, or today. Most kanji that are pronounced differently are imported based on their metaphorical meanings rather than speakings.
