A perfect guide:

Step one: Watch anything for Japanese natives by Japanese. (input)
Step two: Repeat Step one till fluent.
Step three: Learn to read.

Done, you now know Japanese perfectly.

If you do this out of order you become a readtard.
If you think to hard you become a readtard.

All language is sound, so the more jp sound that goes into your ears the more jp you'll acquire. (The only exception is sign languages) We have a special thing in our brain called the LAD (Language Acquisition Device), that when it hears new language it 'acquires it'. This acquisition process is totally out of the scope of your conscious experience. The only thing you need to do with your conscious experience is meet a bare minimum attention to the jp language. The reason people who watch lots of anime don't know jp is that they are reading the English subtitles not listening to the language, this results them not reaching this bare minimum of attention. The reason adults fail to learn languages is not that there LAD has gotten any worse, but they fail to get enough input of the same type and quality.

The problem is many read jp before they are fluent,
this is counter to how everyone learns there native language.

The reason you can understand any written language is that you are speaking it
in your head. You are actually subtly moving your throat muscles, in fact,
there are machines that can pick this up and can tell what you are reading in
your head!

So when you read before you know jp you must map the symbols to the English sound system. (eg あ is the English 'a' instead of the real jp vowel ) Your brain then hears this artificial language and you then acquire that instead of jp. But the situation is often worse than this. Readtards preach that one must totally understand everything, and if you don't understand something, analyze every single piece of language you don't understand. The problem is, all the tools they use for there analysis is totally made up and not real. Dictionaries, mono or bilingual can never capture the 'raw' meaning and it's use and are totally arbitrary. Grammar is arguably worse, made up by the stupidest academic field imaginable, linguistics.

And even if they were somehow 'good', they would be bad.
For one simple reason, any conscious analysis blocks input from going into the
LAD.
( This is proven in the cases of people who did ALG )

The reason readtards preach 'white noise bad' is because of muh input
hypothesis. This stems from the fact comprehensible input is misunderstand. Babies are literally the dumbest who don't
understand anything and barely, if at all, direct there awareness.
Input has to be 'comprehensible' is actually a very low bar, as in it is
talking about 'things'.


There are many bad effects of readtardation.
The first result is obvious, bad pronunciation, but there are actually deeper
ramifications than that.

Let us consider just 2:

1: is your reading speed will always be capped, you won't be able to reach native level reading speed. You are reading in gaijinben, and gaijinben lacks many features of spoken jp. One of which is connected speech, which systematically changes sounds of words so it can be spoken faster.
2: there is a 'glove effect' were it seems to take more effort to read, speak, and listen than a native speaker. This is because, instead of relying on the LAD entirely, you are mixing between your conscious rules ( made second nature through practice ) and your acquired language ( gaijinben ) It feel's like your not actually 'touching' anything, like you have gloves on. You can never feel 'at home' in the language. This also limits how much things can effect your emotions, where you just 'get it' viscerally.

There are more but these are just off the top of my head.

But don't worry if you are a readtard!
There is a cure!
Hard switch to listening only NOW.
The earlier the easier.

You are not permanently damaged like some might say, but you simply just
know an artificial jp dialect.
Now its time to go from a gaijinben to a real jp dialect.
This will take time. Not as long to acquire the language from scratch because
you know a related language/dialect gaijinben, but it will take time.

I would also 'turn my brain off'.
It will take time to lose the habit of constant analysis but it will be
worth the effort of long term gains.

Stay away from dictionary lookups, grammars, and reading.
Read when its easy, when you already know real jp.

If you must use anki or something, this is the only acceptable card format:
screenshot and audio on front, nothing on back

The card contains some input were you feel you understand something new from it.
It is a TRUE i+1 card.

Grade Good.
If you 'forget it'- delete it.

Simple and easy.

Watch anime, watch whatever. You already know the input learning
drill. Maximize Active input and if you can't do that passively input with condensed audio from
your active. If you can't do that, any kind of available passive listening.
