Last week a 5h documentary on Yume Nikki caught my attention. Been following YN related things since forever but this still had a few interesting tidbits of information I didn't know about.
For example, the OG JP posts where YN started, the ones where 2kki and .flow started, the secret hunting for earlier versions, how well/bad JP users took the wait for the last update, some drama between 2channel and niconico (who where seen as sort of modern youtube normalfags to them) and other things like KIKIYAMA's lost music profile and uploads, how many future, would be indie game makers, were hanging out in places where YN first appeared on the west, and so on.
Also funny how the OG 2kki posters toyed with the idea of 2kki being browser based, since it was fullfilled with the Online version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCKQObB0Zm4
I find some parts of this thing to be too opinionated and/or pretentious, but the interesting parts are quite well worth it.
Also it has a section about the tanasinn meme, which is fucking ancient by now, that was a nice blast from the past.

>some parts of this thing to be too opinionated and/or pretentious
that sounds annoying. modern youtube is filled with pretentious 2h+ long video essays in which the content creator talks about history / culture of something that they haven't experienced on their own and they review it. is that the case for this video as well?
i'll still probably check it out but i really don't like bunch of nobodies talking out of their asses

It seems the most he's done is that recent toby fox interview.

The inspiration from hikkidom is quite obvious, so he was aware of those threads. If you follow the timeline, it feels like he kept adding a few updates for people to hunt the secrets, most of the hidden things were added later on.
I feel like the scope he had in mind was a smaller game for a niche audience, and it ended up growing big unexpectedly. Not even talking about the west, the game getting popular in niconico back then was already a big boom.

I wonder if he stopped updating because of that, or he got bored of it, or what else happened. It's not like he hates the game like Koronba with LCD DEM since he approved the 3D game and such.

Depends on when you found it, what was your mental state when you found it, and so on.
An rpgmaker game with no dialogue or fights was unheard of.
If I think of something that nowadays still suffers from what you say, is the Bike Effect. If one is new to the game and doesn't know anything about it, the difficulty of navigating looping worlds and Mado's slow speed might turn them away from it.
If they have heard about the game, they'll probably rush to the bike so theycan check out all the interesting places people talk about.
After knowing the game, people kinda tend to use more the rest of the effects because there's no rush.

I wouldn't be surprised if all the attention on his small passion project overwhelmed him. Like you said, he probably didn't feel like adding any more of himself into a work that overstepped his expected audience.
Shows just how private a person he is where most people, even other hikkiNEETs, would jump on that popularity train to make a name for themselves.

the tl;dr was it was all going fine until Koronba did a sudden 180. deleted the game and posted something along the lines of "do not talk about LCD DEM, do not share LCD DEM, erase everything about LCD DEM", and also deleted his other music and pretty much vanished.
Naturally this triggered a Streissand Effect and got some people interested in it. They gathered his music and other music he made using other pseudonyms, people meme'd about the situation, youtubers milked the mystery, etc.
At least that's my recalling of the events.

Congratulations anon! Feel free to look around about things you may have missed, like Uboa or FACE.
What did you think of the game? There are many theories, but personally I think what does best is to serve a world with no context, no surface-level relatability to the human experience other than hikkiNEETdom and loneliness. It just tingles the fine line between "I know how this works" and "I have no clue what is going on" that is so enjoyable.

Regarding 2kki, keep in mind without guides I don't think it's humanly possible to uncover everything unless you play for a few decades.
Finding all the effects and basic endings is somewhat doable, but the secret endings, wallpapers, things that unlock post-endings...
Of all the games, it feels like YN and .flow should be absolutely experienced alone, but 2kki fits well with the online experience, as it is a collaborative project since the beginning. Though if you try the online version, I think the optimal thing is to turn on Immersion Mode so it hides global chats, player counts and such so you can experience finding dreamers doing their own thing in some random deep dream world.

I want to elaborate on my thoughts about 2kki and online.
The impression most players (and anons) had about 2kki, historically speaking, was that 2kki is less focused but broader and more vast due to the defining feature being a collaborative project. The opposite would be .flow, which is extremely focused on its themes, and more compact. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. At the end of the day, it offers a different experience.
Generally, each contributing author have their unique style that you end up recognizing. Like, you can end up recognizing how a world is made on the wataru style, or the noildoof style, and so on. However, bits and pieces of lore about Urotsuki are generally spread out around and you can end up having a general idea of her situation.
However the endings are completely divergent, so there's no definite canon, story wise.

About the Online version:
While 2kki has its roots in the JP community and the 2chan YN threads. Basically the development story of Online is someone came up with a way to turn EasyRPG engine games into multiplayer, and uploaded it on a github. Initially, it was just YN as a proof of concept.

Soon after, people started talks about how this would specially fit 2kki due to its nature. A little bit after the basic structure was formed and people started playing, the JP devs became aware of the project and requested 2kki online to be shut down, by concerns about how a multiplayer mode would affect the intended experience, as well as the possibility of the project owners fucking with the content the authors made.

2kki was shut down, but talks started between the 2kki devs and the online devs. Back and forth negotiations ended with an agreement for online to host 2kki, as long as a sort of contract was respected: To not modify the ingame files whatsoever, to not claim it's the main "2kki experience", to not overtake or claim ownership over 2kki, and so on. This was not a problem, as all the Online systems are wrappers around the base game files so there was no need to touch anything inside.

2kki online was reinstated, and online devs added content around exploring the game, such as expeditions, badges, chats. Some 2kki devs appear from time to time and lead guided expeditions around the worlds they've made.

Community-wise: Online 2kki has all kinds of people, but it seems to have a lot of the usual young users from various countries that are attracted to free games with no high end PC requirements. Take that as you will.
You can also expect some of the sort of creatures that usually dwell within discord-related spaces, if that bothers you.
The biggest userbases are english and/or spanish speaking, but there's also koreans, russians, and japanese. The japanese tend to appear and form parties at certain hours (good JST timezones). Some people like the author of .flow also visit the game sometimes.

Overall people are quite chill. I like how sometimes, with no words but just behavior, flashmobs form of people using certain effects in the Nexus, or some people start following others around and so and expeditions are formed up on the fly to go to to some arbitrary world.

I generally stick to either observe it all develop as a disattached observer, or toggle Immersion Mode and explore around, and if I find a random dreamer in some world, exchange a brief conversation. Though sometimes just following some dreamers around is fun too.
I find this to be like experiencing an interconnected dreamworld, sort of a collective unconscious, so there's a strong argument for a chat, and words in general, to alter the experience, but overall if you don't go so far so as to treat it as a Club Penguin kind of thing, it's quite nice to have a talk here and there.

Thank you so much for your kind words, anon. The reason I like this game so much is because it represents, in my opinion, the quintessence of a gaming experience. By that I mean discovery. Games have, of course, developed a grammar and an insane amount of rules that, as a "smart gamer" (I am throwing a reference around, don't be bothered by it) you just get to know. That is "convenient", in a way, and many times allows for "content" (more enemies, bigger inventory, bigger skill trees, etc. Then there is the narrative aspect of it, which has become more and more specific and strict through time, so as to resemble other mediums from which games had to "learn": the lineal/river stories with lots of text from novels, and the dreaded cutscenes from movies. It is obvious that it works for many people, and I am not necessarily bashing at it; I just personally don't like it too much, and get bored playing most games (it might be a me problem though).
Yume Nikki is just an almost clairvoyant answer to the current state of gaming. It throws you into a world that not only plays with the rules (the obvious 5 first minutes with the door, for example), but most of the times it doesn't have them! You don't know what is going to happen in this session: maybe you will wander aimlessly for an hour before getting bored and quitting, or, maybe, just maybe, you will discover a pyramid in the middle of a dessert you thought you knew whose staircases lead you to the sky and, finally, a black and white room with mysterious flowers of unknown origin and purpose. Precisely because most of the time effects aren't necessary, the moments you discover a situation when you need them feel true, I guess, feels like you have really discovered something, not just followed the dev’s whims. There are times where you don't discover anything, but that just elevates the moments when you do, and when you do, man, I have had goosebumps about those moments. And I find the vagueness of the experience, since I think it really doesn't tell you a story, just really captivating. As you say elsewhere, a kind of collective unconscious (albeit from a single person), and I am a sucker for Jung, so of course I love that.
Hm, the Face... I think I may or may not know that one, but I won't ask. I have had my Yume Nikki experience and it may be different from others but that's good too.

>> No.45030830

>>45018443
Thank you so much for the 2kki posts too, they are so interesting. The things you have talked about are so fascinating to me, it really feels like a collective unconscious of sorts. I can see Yume 2kki is a different beast, and I should treat it accordingly, so thank you again for your tips. I am very excited to plunge into the experience, maybe tonight. What you said about the multiplayer isn't so true, btw; my father and another girl met in a dream the day before they even got to know each other. So it IS possible, just not usual, I guess.

I really enjoyed your pov on why Yume Nikki is interesting. Have seen many explanations over the years, but never this reasoning about how it's kind of the soul that games, as a medium, are forgetting. I'm also quite a Jung reader, so hell yeah regarding that.

>>45030830
2kki behavior is so layered. You have your own experience, what Urotsuki's experience could be, the layer of the people playing the game as a collective, and the layer of the devs, their contributions, styles, dramas, those who join, those who left.... It's nice to just wander around and observe it all happen in real time.
And very interesting story you have with your father. I've had a few prophetic dreams and other kinds of meaningful dreams beyond the usual too.

Have fun with the game, and also consider trying out .flow, I love YN and many of the fangames, but .flow is my favorite one.

Here's one of those special dreams. When I was younger (maybe I still do?), I had a whole consistent dreamworld.
The hub so to speak was a medium-sized city built in a different style than mine, with a river entering it from a side, and forming a lake at the center, with an island which had a huge mall at the center of it.

What's batshit insane, is the size, the consistence, and the persistent nature of it.
For more almost two decades, from time to time I would dream of it, finding myself in different starting spots. Every single time, the whole thing was consistent. To the point, if I was lucid, I could take bus trips because I knew when I could get off the bus to go somewhere. Multiple district long rides, bridges....
In the city I wandered many times through the streets, visited a theme park in the outskirts, bars with different arcade machines, schools, universities, hospitals, festival shops, pawnshops, bakeries...
Many, many long dreams entirely happening in that mall in the center, which also had a train station. Mall was huge so I could spend many dreams just looking around the shops, games, clothing, books, arcades, food. Whole dreams playing at the arcades, I finished in there at least a gun game similar to Time Crisis, I can still vividly remember some stages.
The train was also usable, usually taking you to an agricultural village. It was fun to walk on top of the big walls surrounding the different plant fields, or just walking through the old streets, or go south to a river very close to the village.
From there you could go walking or with a car to another village, a few mountain paths and a few ruins. Lots of detail, always consistent.

I've been getting there fewer and fewer times... hopefully the frequency increases again.
Just incredible.

Well, my mall was huge and tall rather than long, so I guess it was technically a skyscrapper?
Not much snow though. Sometimes rain, most of the time ranging between morning time and sunset light. Or night.
I wouldn't discard shared dreams, since one time a friend dreamt about it, but he was in the opposite place I was.
So I was in the industrial area, looking towards the other side of the lake (with the mall island in the middle). And my friend was looking at the industrial area from that other side. When he told me, he described some towers and industrial buildings, same sight as were I was at.
It only happened once though.

2kki online really accelerated the production too. We started seeing a lot more experimentation even outside of qxy stuff, with some 3D maps being WIP. Not to mention them finally fleshing out masks more, to the point each one has sitting animations.
Taking random people or my friends to cool maps i know is a good time. Sometimes i'll just run into someone deep on the way to ToV, Depths or some other place and we'll start traveling together without a word.
I still wouldn't recommend 2kki online as the first way to experience the game, but 2kki is a game you'd never be able to fully explore blindly (or even beat, thanks to the bat effect) so eventually switching to online and just going delving with other people to more obscure areas seems like a good time to me. I played this game to hell and back even before wataru left, yet i missed so many early connections from places that seemed like a "dead end"

I'd say its both. Because i do spot some fixes that are made to make the experience smoother on online. It used to be so rough when it first started but now even shadows and tints work properly for other players on the screen.
They even made boats keep your worn mask, so people can bring them to deeper areas when they just wanna take things slow.

I've never seen this talked about, but really one of my favorite elements 2kki introduced to the Yume Nikki "genre" is the boats. It's such a little unnoticeable thing, but so important in impact.
Boats allow for exploration of surface liquid-heavy areas, which unlocks a whole new creative space.
For me, it's one of the very few things in 2kki that is a straight up mechanical upgrade over Yume Nikki's "use frog to walk on shallow water" mechanic.

You can see similar experiments in mechanical upgrade in fangames regarding the problem of the Bike Effect.
>looping worlds make walking speed to places too obtuse for most people
>the presence of Bike Effect fixes this, but it reinforces the feelings of slow from walk speed
>it also overtakes effect usage almost completely unless you are using other effects on purpose

2kki's wolf-bike combo feels like an experiment in trying to fix this issue, but the end result is everyone tends to favor wolf-bike over just bike and the issue remains.
The other temptative fix is fangames who have a key for running speed that is unrelated to any concrete effect. This is a good fix in theory, but then, why bother having normal walkspeed in the first place? It also pushes the "overall speed" of a YN game towards zoomzoom which detracts from the experience.
So basically there's no "boat-tier" fix for the Bike problem yet.

Specifically for 2kki Online I feel the best current idea is to have the run button. It's fun and useful to have dreamers using a variety of effects while going somewhere, but currently you need to swap to bike if you need to catch up with the group or traverse a dangerous area, and then go back to the effect (this also makes you lose the mask)

For other games or singleplayer 2kki I'm not sure.

Nocturnal Grove's boat section is one of the prettiest Yume Nikki fangame areas ever, i really love the areas that use boats and i'm glad they work great with online now too. (Last time i went there with someone his sprite got stuck at the entrance of the map even though he was moving along with me)
For the bike issue i'm honestly fine with taking things slowly with masks or other effects, taking the scenery in and taking a minute long break every time we find a bench with a vending machine, taking detours to optional rooms and such. I feel like people ignore the "journey" part of getting to a deep world. You should spend time in all qxy/wataru maps, rather than racing to Lavender Waters or The Depths as fast as possible to get the most out of the experience.
>>45099560
Going through chaser maps with mask really can be a problem. It took me many tries to go to the giant toilet wearing mask with a group of three.
We had to remove the masks anyway to head to the Dream Pool, but it made for a good memory and screenshot.

Back then the most popular of that sort of annoying western, tumblrcore theories was the classic madowasraped (kyuukyuu-kun into FACE event, etc) which got spammed everywhere. The tranny theory was niche in comparison, only really having the "mado can piss in the boys toilet" thing. At least Uro has the Boy and Schoolboy effect if you want to go down that road (but also feminine ones like Maiko or Twintails so yeah).

meta rant, feel free to ignore:
I hate how confused western teenagers turned literally every subject on the internet into an all-devouring black hole of sex/gender issues talk. I couldn't agree more. I've got nothing against whatever the hell people wanna do with their lives, I'm in no place to judge by virtue of being a NEET whose still retarded enough to post on /jp/ in current year, but I'd really really like to be able to talk to people about this game and some others without it descending into egg this and egg that. There's more than a handful of games where that is a prevalent thing either intentionally or retroactively and I get that, but it'd be nice if people could have more than just that one theory, since in general subscribing to just one is just so boring and means when that discussion is over your partner has nothing else to say. And that's to say nothing of how vitriolic people get when you push back on topics like the ones you mentioned, kinda like how the aforementioned FGO coomers go completely fucking insane when you point out Raikou is an incredibly ugly character who looks like she was bodyjacked/twisted in half and that 100% of the reason why anyone likes her is because of the fanart.

man this game is definitely one of the most memorable games i've ever played. first time i knew about this game is from the vomitsukis (lol) i've seen everywhere since middle school but only got the chance to play it 2 yrs ago. amazing artstyle & coloring, mado being depicted as having issues but shown expressionless is so on-point, a cute character traversing mesmerizing and insane dreams is a symphony, and the effects collecting gameplay may seem plain simple and boring but that's only true for the first 5-10 effects, while the rest require patience and tenacity to find
sry if my blogpost seems stupid/annoying, all i wanna say is that YN and all its fangames (currently exploring them) are all very interesting and beautiful, an adventure game which doesn't monotonously tell you the story about knights and princesses or a wop/nigger/slav/etc climbing the stairs of gangsterhood, and i hope at the very least kikiyama won't 404 this game in the future like what koronba did to LcdDem

man, why is .flow so much more nostalgic feeling compared to the other games
the whole story is about the slow descent of sabitsuki's story and the more you explore the game the more depressing it gets
but what gets me more than anything is how hard she tried to live the way she wanted as she was dying

It's nice to see the thread is still up.
I am the user who finally finished the original game after many years without a single guide, and now I am getting progressively deeper into Yume 2kki. But after a few weeks in, I have realized I am starting to have a hard time with this game, because I just don’t know how you are supposed to enjoy it.
For example, the game is supposed to be played alone, as all YN games are. I’d say the individual experience is almost an essential component of a real Yume Nikki playthrough. Yet the online version also offers an incredibly rich experience, with the possibility to explore the territory with newfound friends, which indeed may be mandatory for some parts, since otherwise you won’t be able discover certain maps (or so I have been told), so much so I am not even sure if Yume 2kki is complete anymore without YNO.
The game is supposed to be played without a map, therefore why the original game lacked one. Getting lost on Yume Nikki is one of its main points. Yet playing without a map on Yume 2kki is akin to suicide, and so I found a program, Obsidian, to help me “cartography” the whole of Urotsuki’s dream as I go.
The game has a rich history of different developers and collaborators and finding about the whole process is a part of the whole experience. Yet any information I look up may spoil a part of the game, which should be played as blindly as possible to maintain that sense of discovery the original has (and which the successor has not only retained but also has clearly has been greatly expanded).
The game wants you to enjoy the travel, rather than the destination. Every map should be enjoyed by itself, rather than as a means for the next one. However, part of the experience is getting progressively deeper into Urotsuki’s unconscious, in fact I would say the game practically asks you to do so, and indeed some of the most mysterious bits of the game seem to happen once you are way past the point of no return and almost of recalling your path hitherto. In practice, that means I am always turn between my wish to enjoy a particular map and the need to see what lies ahead.
Further into the maps. The game is intended as a whole, hence why the maps are interconnected and, well, why it is considered a single game rather than a handful of them (which could perfectly happen given the sheer magnitude of it). Yet it is clear not only that there is clearly no interconnected narrative here (which in my opinion there wasn’t in Yume Nikki either, and wasn’t needed), but also no “overall atmosphere” to it either (which Yume Nikki absolutely had, and it was one of its defining qualities). Urotsuki’s dream landscape certainly lacks the cohesiveness of Madotsuki’s, the former of which gives me the impression of being much more mentally sound, as her dreams convey the full range of emotions rather than only mostly negative ones. Which is not bad, really, just not as gripping for a character as Madotsuki’s ambiguous angst.
Even further into the maps, the quality between the maps differs vastly, and some of them are amazing (with a few that I have found to be memorable, even better than the best Yume Nikki maps) while other are mediocre, and a few have managed to irritate me (there is one monochrome map with the constant mooing of a cow where I had to turn off the volume). What’s worse, some of the worst maps in the game could lead to some of the absolute best (I particularly remember a certain bridge which leads to a certain shrine), or vice versa, which adds to the feeling of general dissonance as a whole.
What to do with the mazes of this game? Do I painstakingly try to draw them and rack my brain trying to find whether I am in any of the 4 similar sections I already passed through ( and which one?!) or if it is a new one? Or do I just try to butthead it after mentally preparing myself to end up in the same place for at least 10 times before I find something noteworthy?
All of these questions are hard to answer because, as the consensus goes, “there is no right answer”. You decide how to play this game, and all of the aforementioned conundrums can be answered both ways depending on your preferences. Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s all about how passive and how active you want your experience to be, the pain and gain, the conscious effort and the unconscious appeal of this subgenre (probably the biggest allure of Yume Nikki for me).
Indeed, many of my doubts could apply not only to Yume 2kki, but to the entire subgenre of YN fangames. I would go so far as to say the game is proving me, and addressing the challenges it poses could lead me not only to a better knowledge, but also to the betterment, of myself. But the scope of Yume 2kki makes these issues much more apparent, and the experience of the game much more ambivalent.
Picrel is an incredible map I found yesterday.

That's a great review of the sentiment when playing 2kki, it's strengths and weaknesses.
Overall is both a similar yet different experience to Yume Nikki. Seems like you got a good grip on it.
And as you said, you choose how you play it.
map Y/N? deep rushes Y/N? online Y/N? meticulously mapping vs hop in, wander, see where you end up. And so on.
It's all a consequence of applying the Yume Nikki formula to a collaborative game spanning years and years of development.
As I mentioned before, 2kki is "widespread, low cohesion" end of the spectrum, while .flow is the "focused, high cohesion" other end of the spectrum. With YN in the middle.

I made the fateful decision to map the maze just after the world of the shore I documented above.
Now I regret it. Everything in Yume 2kki needs to be bigger, and no physical medium I possess is enough to contain this area, and the multiple partitions were losing meaning as I went on. So now I am redoing it all in Paint, but even that is proving an effort, because the map loops, making it effectively impossible to recreate the zone faithfully. I will do it, regardless. Yes, I am becoming a little bit obsessed about this game.
But I needed to disconnect and started to watch the video that spawned this thread. "The best game of all time", huh... there are people definitely even crazier about it than I am. Its premise, to be the "definitive Yume Nikki video" is, in my opinion, detrimental to the whole of the message, but it still is the first ever analysis I have ever read or watched about this game, since I was always clear about avoiding any possible spoilers, so I will probably still watch it all. Feels good, man.

Woah, rare Neftelia mention, I also played that a decade ago or so.
As for fangames, the hot thing nowadays is 2kki in online mode I guess, but I find Deep Dreams to have some nice music, sound design and scenery too. Kinda like LCD DEM. I get not liking that one since it's a bit too empty for my tastes, but the music is great. And it has some memorable worlds to me, like the Stained Glass world, the Rice Fields which have a weird vibe of nostalgia, and the Aquarium. I liked the overgrown houses scenery too.

I would like to ask what is the situation with Wataru like. It seems he is the favourite Yume 2kki developer for many, which brought a lot of stress to him and made him quit. His maps were wiped off the game (I fucking hate that of jp artists btw). Then he comes back and his maps are brought back into the game. And... is that all? He will never make more content? Did he only come back to let the maps again into the game? I am not criticizing that at all, actually. I would totally endorse it. I just want to know because I got curious and there is little information on the Internet that I have seen.

>coomers
i disagree slightly on this. or i guess it depends on what you're referring to when you use that term. i tend to see more people complaining about other people sexualizing characters than i do people actually sexualizing characters (outside of spaces where sexualizing characters should just be expected, like in porn comments sections or something), and it strikes me as especially stupid when it's literally a vn/game that has sex scenes in it. to me, it strikes me as people going "sex is bad and you should feel bad for having a sex drive", and i disagree with that, i don't know what's particularly wrong with having feelings for a character, sexual or otherwise (within reason, i should note. obviously i think spam and outrage bait are annoying but i don't think it's as big of a problem as people like to make it out to be).
i do agree with everything else, confused teenagers on the internet recently are very annoying when it comes to discussing "safe" sexual themes (for lack of a better term), like the madowasraped theory or trans/egg stuff (though, in the case of specifically yume nikki, there should be some leeway i think. part of the appeal of this game is varied everyone's interpretation of it is). in the case of confused teenagers pushing trans stuff into every discussion, it just feels like either projection or validation bait.

Oh, I see it could be understood that way but when I wrote that I didn't meant some degree of sexualization, but rather as in when discussion about a series, game, character etc ends up completely overrun by coomers to the point people don't discuss anything else about it.
For example NieR/Drakengard threads in 4chan used to be as good as YN threads and were some of my favorites in the whole site, but when Automata came up they became just 2B butt / 9S shota posting with no actual discussion.
Gacha games are also already a shit genre anyways, but it has become sort of a standard too to call every new character a "waifu" and coompost about it endlessly, besides few exceptions.

Today I dreamt I was with a friend showing him and his parents my new home. It was next to a lake and the complex was partially submerged. Went through all the rooms and corridors, then underwater I showacased a crevice in the house which had weird alien eggs which I farmed, they were impressed.

I'm very glad I found this thread before it disappeared into the ether. It's a very good thread, it reminds me of discussions years ago I read anytime YN was brought up, about the nature of dreams and our experiences with them. This game somehow captured those ethereal feelings perfectly and drew them out of us, its impact cannot be understated despite how humble its origin is.

I long ago decided that if I could ever truly forget any single game so I could re-experience it for the first time, it would be Yume Nikki. As it is, finding out about 2kki being online is actually refreshing, because I never got very far in the game (the sheer size put me off) so I'm definitely going to go check that out.

Dreams are one of those phenomena that will perhaps never be understood by conventional science or logic. I've seen the future in my dreams plenty of times, rarely anything outstanding but it's something that always firmly grounds me in reality, reminding me that there's so much we can't hope to understand with pure logic. It's important that we don't lose that spirituality that modern society tries so hard to suppress, gut feelings and metaphysical connections are part of ourselves and have served us well over the thousands of years, and denying them can't be good for us in the long run.

I had an internal dialogue that feels like the same one KIKIYAMA probably went on when deciding to be so private and secretive
Which is, if you want your game to inculcate a deep sense of wonder in the player, it strongly compels you to minimize developer-audience interactions and let the player interpret for themselves.
Artist interviews in general are a bit sketchy, since the questions we most want answers to are the ones best left unanswered, like "What does this game really mean?" or " Is X theory true?" In the end, artists can only talk productively about their creative process or technical decisions, which tend not to generalize well to other artists. There are virtually no cases where an artist delivering a message works more effectively in real life, as opposed to delivering that same message via art and letting it all speak for itself, while letting all the other trivial stuff remain unspoken

YN is one of the most phenomenal games I have ever played, perhaps _the_ most phenomenal game I've ever played. There wasn't a moment of it where I wasn't in a state of calmness, tingling coursing through my body. If someone else doesn't get to it first I'd like to create a beautiful 3D rendition of it. I always think of that water planet from Interstellar as a great example of what such a thing would look like.

And now for some meta... I used to be? (Maybe still am?) a mod on Uboachan. Its an okay little site but its not as good as it used to be IMO. The whole tranny thing with Sei and people on the UC discord was extremely off-putting and I feel nothing but deep contempt for them.

i agree, i love the boats
i wonder what it would be like if most maps were designed for walk speed instead of bike speed, so in general the maps would be smaller and things would be closer together.
and then the bike was treated the same way as the boats and it would only be available on long roads, like the highway, or other areas where it would make sense
though maybe that would just feel kind of like an arbitrary restriction, and maybe lots of maps would end up with the opposite problem of feeling too small and dense

I'm not fond of fan made sequels, I feel like dreams and death are too interconnected and, like it or not, the game has to end with the ultimate form of escapism, that's why the game doesn't work with a different protagonist or a different ending.
Even the greeks understood the relationship between dreams, chaos and dead; Nyx and Erebus form a couple representing night and darkness. Their son, Hypnos, the god of sleep, is the father of Morpheus, who specifically governs dreams, along with other sons Ikelos, Phobetor, and Phantasos, each personifying different aspects of dreaming (they're called Oneiros). Thanatos, another child of Nyx, personifies death, similar to Hades. Although not directly related to Oneiros, Hades shares the realm of death and darkness. This network of deities reflects the complexity and interconnectedness of concepts such as sleep, darkness, dreams, death, and chaos. The point being, there's a logical path, the game is not about dreams, it's about death, the dream is just part of the journey, but it has to come to an end, and trying to keep the game alive is counterproductive, they're trying to disrupt the eternal darkness

watched the first hour or so of OP's video and decided it was time to start playing this game for real some days ago, somehow I never spoiled myself on effect locations after a decade and a half of being on the internetz, though it was inevitable id get spoiled on uboa, surprisingly enough I dont remember being spoiled on anything else, so im basically 100% blind
thing is, I feel like I hit a wall, havent found anything in the past two hours, got 16 effects not counting the game manual, so I got impatient and decided to ask for directions for some particularly difficult to get effect, could be any, just the first door to take from the hub is enough for me, found 2-3 new rooms tonight at least, right now im trying to find the mars event again since I didnt have many effects the first time I went through it, so hopefully I can do something there this time, also FIENDING for the bike, would make all the traveling more tolerable

I like to believe it was a false awakening or something and that she's actually fine after the ending, but unless Kikiyama himself comes back to confirm her fate, then it's still ambiguous to me.
To my knowledge .flow is much more linear and smaller, so im looking forward to it, YN Gensou is pretty fun so far, nice music for sure and im glad I get more OG YN content, might look into Yume Nikki 3D and Dream Diary, but from im reading up on the latter, it's not entirely convincing.

I played YN3D back in the day when it released. It was interesting to see a fangame made in the Build Engine (duke nukem 3d's).
The new areas were nice and so were the classic ones, it was the first time I saw a 3D version of the YN worlds. Nowadays there's also YN worlds made in VRChat and there's seems to be a few vaporware projects of people remaking YN in 3D though they seem to get nowhere.
The author of .flow has some videos exploring some of these 3D YN worlds in VRChat

Is there a limit to how many effects you can obtain in .flow until you have to trigger a specific event? I got that impression from the room thats all bloody and has Sabitsuki pass out, so I assume theres some sort of progression system, especially now that I went to that bar room and there was another white hair girl with a pipe that kills you if you try to attack her, I also assume it has to do with those numbers that keep increasing in the status screen
in any case, what do I have to do to make the game move forward? I find new areas sometimes, but they dont really let me do anything, maybe I dont have the right effects for them or something, like in the basement of that one abandoned town in the FC World, do I just keep exploring until I stumble on an old room that has something different?

If I remember right there's no special event needed to progress the game in the first part, the part where you have to find all the effects.
There are three special counters in the game:
-the rust counter: events and getting captured/knocked out/killed/caught increases it, you can have an idea of its state by how fucked up Sabi's real room gets. It influences some events and I think a menu theme
-the cake counter: the more cake you eat in the bar the higher it goes, when its high enough you can access some secret places like a room in the apartments area
-the friendship counter: the more you interact with Oreko, the submarinist girl (also appears in other places) the higher it goes. It also affects available menu themes

only read the rust counter one because I just know thats the one im filling right now, I'm starting to notice some slight changes
>different endings
Are they connected somehow or are they different from each other? the game clearly shows that Sabitsuki had a very difficult, theres a clear focus on death and trauma, from what little I saw for now, the hospital, children dying, the street with a dead end that has one of the black creatures appear when you try to go back (stalker?), the room with different stages of her life and that 4th door with a repressed memory, etc all points to traumatizing events that made her shut herself in her room and use the internet as a form of escape, but it's all catching up to her right now.
A lot of other stuff I want to mention but it's just obvious stuff that im sure was talked about a million times already so im gonna stop there, but what im trying to say is that with how clear the game is with its areas and how Sabitsuki has a lot of character as seen in the Me screen, I would expect her to have a single definite ending, and if it's multiple I expect those to elaborate more on what happens to her with each one you get, rather than have those endings give her different outcomes altogether

Without spoilering details, for the first ending you need to collect all the effects and go outside, standard yume nikki procedure.
The second ending elaborates on the first ending and hints at that there's something more to what's going on.
The third ending is the true ending and you need additional steps. Come here to ask when you get the first one because you need to do some specific things that are not hinted at all.

don't really have exactly what you're looking for but the only other two i've played are yume nikki gensou and a kirby-themed one called yume no kirby, but the former is more of a metroidvania like game than the average fangame (though still fun, i like coming back to it every now and then even after a few years of having it) and the latter is really small with only 4 effects and hasn't been updated since the initial dream diary jam release in 2022.

Sabi best girl.
Regarding the ending,
Was Rust the real Sabi all along? was it Rust, covered by the effects as a sort of monster/memory containment? or was Sabitsuki the real identity, who gained control of the illness?
Did Sabitsuki kill the source controlling her illness, or did Rust kill Sabitsuki and become the main personality?
Also worthy of mention, the game starts with a static screen, as if going into .flow, leading to Sabi's "real" room. Was the real world just another layer of .flow all along? The gaskmask maid appears in the "real" world in the ending...
YN also raises a similar question in the ending, with the jellyfish appearing around mado's death scene.

I guess we'll never know.

As for fangames, there's nothing at the level of .flow in my opinion, but there's Me which is heavily influenced by .flow, and many other fangames going for different tones.
LCD DEM and Deep Dreams are very nature oriented and have some of the best music and some great areas. There's also Answered Prayers, Brainchild, Dream Genie, Ultraviolet, Muma Rope, and many more.

she is.
i just go with the idea that {spoiler] Rust is some weird manifestation of the disease that whittles her subconscious down before smacking what's left, though whether the ending is her dying or somehow getting better depends on my thoughts. [/spoiler]
i like to think the ending is the real world and most of the more grounded dream characters are real in some shape or form, maybe there's some weird time gap where she goes to bed (and cleans her room). from the state of the building from the balcony i can see this being a shit enough part of town that gas mask maids with chainsaws are semi-normal and a disease that may or may not gut your face and make you more violent is a problem, if exaggerated. i don't know, i'm not good at theorizing.

I believe the ending is the real world, overall .flow has very realistic imagery compared to other games in its "dream" state
I think that everything that happens in the flow is a direct memory of what was happening to her in the real world, but with odd representations and imagery for things at time
for example, her time in the rainbow city area would be her running away from home going to the heart of the city and getting exposed to drugs as a delinquent

>> No.45947224

yeah i got that from it too, she at best rarely saw a place that wasn't seedy or grungy with her mind sometimes conjuring up places that are more of a blank like maybe the red thing in the bathtub was just some random noise she heard while in an area similar to where you find it and her mind connects it to some weird ass monster instead of something normal.

Well, that used to be my case 100%, and I've managed to change that. Now I am able to recall at least one dream per night at will. Just so you know that it is doable.
Protip: If you are to believe Jung, there are two levels to the unconscious: the personal (also known as "shadow") and the collective. When the people featured in your dream are friends, family or acquaintances, then you are dealing with the personal unconscious; if the people featured in your dreams take the form of people you don't know, then it is the collective unconscious speaking to you. Usually the dreams we feel are "dumb" or "uninteresting" are the ones having to do with the personal unconscious, but, while true to an extent, they are also important for the development of the personality. There are also different "levels" to the unconscious, depending on the archetype symbolized in the dream. Then, of course, there are dreams, like the ones discussed itt, that seem to outgrow this description, because dreams are, at heart, wild things that cannot be explained away so easily.

i had a dream where i entered a world full of immortal people, and i was the only one who aged, and because they were all many times older than me i wondered if they saw me as a child
i was just trying to live there with those people, but for some reason it ended with me getting into a gunfight to defend my life, and running away on top of a bull
and before i could escape, i reached a point where i realized i couldnt go any further because there was nothing outside of the town, which is when i woke up
