Do you prefer LNs with a clear ending in mind and a story that works towards that ending all the way, LNs where the writer is just making up new arcs as he goes along because the MC having fun with his girls is more the point, or LNs where there is obviously a clear ending in mind but the writer got distracted chasing something shiny and is clearly never going to actually get there in the next 5 years?

holy shit did you find a rare short LN? i'm used to stuff lasting for 15 years minimum
facetiousness aside (because it wasn't a joke) i learned to not care, endings are overrated (and i have seen stuff end to know), as long as i enjoy the volume and the story doesn't sour me enough to not pick up the next, that's enough for me
also it's extremely rare for an author to close up a story and not shit up their next one by failing to live to expectations, to the point the only example that comes to mind is the blade dance author and the new shota demon lord story, and even then only because my expectations were already not that high
yes there's ones like yomu and shinkou that have multiple ones i like but that's not the same in my opinion

It would have been a lot funnier if she were younger desu. Imagine if Leviathan was born because Betty had her first period the day she logged in to Dendro. The Arabian oil prince got his powers after being denied his reign; Slime got his because he's a clone with no purpose in life; and the Scandinachinkian bitch got hers because she wanted her words to be heard by everyone. Then there's Behemot, who got her world-defying strength because she had a shitty day in school; that would be like a kick in the balls for all the other Superiors.

Even in fan translations, you should be able to pick up who is speaking by the context of what they are saying and their personality. Ans usually they set the scene of who is talking and will make note of any interjections from other characters joining the scene.
You will get better the more you read and will find it that constantly having, Blank say, A responds etc, etc gets really annoying and ruins the flow.
So you will have A say something, B responds or A says something, B reacts, and A continues.

>what is the different between Light Novel and the other one (forgot name).
assume you mean either WNs (web novels) or VNs (visual novels)
VNs are published like any game would, in one big block with CGs, music and dialogue depending on the budget, some split it into episodic releases like umineko but depends on the dev
WNs are novels posted on various websites (given the narou monopoly is gone) and updated very regularily, often daily or weekly unless the author slows down for external factors
>why do some stories have a LN and the other one?
more often than not WNs are the "true" source material but the LN gets treated as the main source material, WNs are by definition amateur releases, LNs are official publications through a publisher
not all LNs have a WN source

Same type of stuff, not quite the same caliber.
Arifureta has moments where it tries to be too serious and makes you believe there's some actual risk to the characters, and it may be due to the author not being that experienced early on but for the first half of the main story there's not much character depth.
This has far more focus on heart to heart stuff without devolving too much into telenovela drama, and counterintuitively the combat ends up being more engaging exactly because there's no "high stakes worry" which allows you to actually take in the scenes without speeding past them to see if someone you care about dies or not.

I just listened to the audio version of 29歳独身 vol 1 today and yesterday and during the first quarter or so I was like 'yeah It's okay but not as good as his other stuff. Nice listen but I don't know if I'll be picking up this series"
By the end of chapter 3 I really wanted to see where this series is going. I'd say maybe he'd gotten better at starting a story interestingly by the time he started saikyou uchuusen but I can't lie I'm kind of invested already. In uchuusen Hiro's always scared of losing his freedom so takes care to not get too involved or committed to things that would tie him down. But in 29歳独身 it seems the concept is going to be a guy goes to the isekai and hopes to live freely but immediately gets a big part of that taken away from him and tried to deal with it. Keep in mind I only know volume 1 so in volume 2 he could completely find a way out of it as far as I know. But if my interpretation is right that would explain the 自由に生きたかった as opposed to 自由に生きたい in the title

If nothing else, this author learns from his own mistakes oddly fast maybe too fast, isekai minecraft was bad at the start but had soul and was interesting, then quickly became less shit until he wrote himself into a corner with the WN, then started to fix the issues on the LN.
29歳独身 started on shaky footing but also avoided catastrophic corners later on while sticking to it's premise and themes.
And now Uchuusen starts out on a solid if simple foundation, then builds up further from there.
The minecraft WN died so the other stories could live.

As I said in my post, for me the beginning of volume 1 felt like not bad but fairly average isekai fantasy, but once he gets the whole scenario set up and you realize what situation the protagonist and the heroine are in it gets really interesting for me. It definitely doesn't feel as confident and sure of itself as Uchuusen. You can still feel that amateurish "a guy is crafting this story" feeling from 29歳独身 whereas Uchuusen manages to thread that needle where it actually feels like you're reading a character's journal. When I talk about Uchuusen I never come up with sentences like "once he gets the whole scenario setup..." or something, I just come up with sentences "when x happens, when y character does z", etc. But I still had fun with it, and I want to try volume 2 now.
I think you'll just have to try it for yourself to find out whether you like it or not.

Is there any easy way to know if the book version of certain LN is way different from the web version? The piracy scene seems to be pretty dead, I can't find any scan of newer stuffs at all. I don't mind buying some but that would be dumb if I can read the same thing on the web, the illusts alone ain't worth it.

Asking someone who read it is the only way. Searching for the same in japanese generally tend to give a hit or two though

I made a small python script to convert Japanese novel TXTs into HTMLs with vertical orientation and proper furigana.
You run it like `python SCRIPTNAME INPUTFILE` and it outputs `out.html`.
I tested it on one volume of Toradora and Shiki.
Yomichan seems to work.
You may need to change the script according to your needs.

import sys
import regex as re
with open(sys.argv[1], encoding='utf8') as f:
txt = f.read()
pattern = re.compile(r'([\p{IsHan}]+)(《[\p{IsHira}\p{IsKatakana}]+》)', re.UNICODE)
output = pattern.sub(r'<ruby>\1<rt>\2</rt></ruby>', txt).replace("|","").replace("《","").replace("》","").replace("\n","</p><p>")
print(output)
with open('out.html', 'w') as f:
f.write('<html><style>html {writing-mode: vertical-rl; text-orientation: upright;} body { background-color: SeaShell;}</style><body><p>'+output+'</p></body></html>')

Well the romance is very old school. It depicts the scenes where they meet each other and become attracted to each other but most of the actual deepening of love and stuff is implied to happen off screen like in old theater or opera, unlike a lot of LNs where they show you the whole development of their relationship directly. This isn't boy meets girl romance it's more like princesses fall in love with Greek epic adventure hero

Tip based on personal experience, depending on how married you're to a particular series you can separate volumes into chunks and treat them as semi-sequels with each arc.
Yes some are "my beloved" tier and you will drop everything temporarily to read a new volume ASAP, but this is for stuff one tier below that.
For example I had dendro's vol 10-12 on the same chunk, then 13-15, 16-19, now waiting for 20-22, while death march I don't care as much but I still like it, so I read it every 5-6 volumes.
Makes it far easier to keep track of dozens of series when you naturally reach stopping points whenever you feel an arc ends while reducing the "I don't remember anything so I gotta reread" factor that comes from jumping between different stuff after reading just one volume.

this is what I already do with manga and anime. I won't finish one piece but I will gladly enjoy 1 or 2 arcs and potentially come back to it months or years later. I've never read one piece but it seemed like a good example. When something is like 50 volumes or 200 episodes long it just works better that way.

Haganai is beloved for a reason, anon. Yomi can and does write pretty engaging dialogue. Imosae can probably be described as the Bakuman of (actual) LN writers. It's chock full of self-refencing, inside jokes, and manuals on how to do your taxes but delivered in a way that doesn't feel stale at all. Itsuki can be rather infuriating at times, yet one can't exactly say they don't understand why he did it. It's soulful and it ends on a good note, can't demand more than that desu. That's what the side stories are, anon. Argonaut, Knights of Fianna, and Erebus/Seven Days of Death all revolve around the ancient/past heroes' way of passing the torch. Argonaut is the most poignant of all the SS desu, and the in-universe shilling for it becomes quite reasonable once you've read the story. Original madan no ou does this.
It's a senki series but the MC gets to spend time with each heroine due to different circumstances but the romance factor with each of them despite being ripe is ultimately not realized but rather well done.

It's been probably like 8 years since I've read madan and while I can't remember much I still remember stuff like shooting down the longbowman's arrow and the notEngland, NotMuslim invasion arc etc.
Very cool stuff.
While it's kinda different the structure in terms of spending time with heroines does match.

Wow it's almost like alienating the audience that may actually be interested in buying the stuff is a suicidal idea.
How can anyone trust after the laughably shoehorned in cover change that they didn't also completely neuter it for "american audiences"? Trick question of course, it's soi press, that's a given.
Which mind you is just absurd at this point, the target audience for otaku stuff has been actively antagonized by western corporations since the start, why is anyone pikafacing when for the past 2 decades at this point (and counting!) the number one canned answer to shut up all criticism is "Don't like it? Learn Japanese then chud"
How is anyone finding it a sudden out of nowhere development the localization industry is collapsing to the point even jewnovelclub is held up by pretty much just bookworm and seirei gensouki?
AA japanese games and shit like gacha in particular are the only vidya that is mostly unfazed by the currently ongoing vidya bubble crash on the mere fact that they pander to otaku, for how long is the west going to continue their collective cope about "all otaku are just basement dweller NEETs (and have no money)" when every single industry aside from the ones pandering to otaku is crumbling down?

I could say the reverse. Was marketing Big Hero 6 as "Baymax" in Japan and putting more focus on the boy's relationship with his robot instead of on the action some kind of anti-West agenda? Not at all, it's just that the target demographic in the West and in Japan respond differently to different things. That's unavoidable.

were large parts of the movie either censored or removed altogether for the japanese release?
did they remove the fight scenes?
why the fuck are you trying to play le both sides when both examples are not comparable at all?

The real anti-japan agenda is how databases used by online dictionaries are being actively sabotaged by the west because they are actively trying to stop as many people as possible from learning Japanese.
These days you will get definitions that are either comically dry or outright wrong, exactly to push the "Japanese is too dry/robotic" meme.
For example look up 岩石 and 岩根 if you don’t believe me, pro tip: they aren’t synonyms.
You think it’s a freaky exception? It’s not, look up 降雪 and 天華, or 強風 and 一陣.
Again, they aren’t synonymous, or they are in the same sense “trees” and “delightful grove” are technically synonyms, in fact the rocks example isn’t even a synonym, not even close.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg by the way, look up 前, 先, 嘗て or 往 if you want to see how fucked up things have been for a while now.
Do yourself a favor and throw your EN > JP dictionary bookmarks in the trash where they belong, and bookmark kotobank,jp, because the sabotage has gotten so bad that throwing words at a JP > JP dictionary and using MTL on the result gives you more accurate definitions with far more depth than whatever garbage the west is trying to feed you.

A few years back it felt like not quite the same thing, these days it's actually a completely different thing.
Take a look at any attempt at discussion of evil lord or kagejitsu outside of here, the english and original versions are so different they are different series with the same skeleton plot and characters, nobody reads schizoman in english but I wouldn't be surprised if it had the same problem.
And those are hardly the only examples.

Finished Koimonogatari and it was great as usual. Nisio is very witty and his writing is enjoyable to read. I saw the anime a long time ago, but there were a lot of things I didn't remember, and of course reading is a different experience. I could relate to Nadeko, with how she regarded everything as worthless and having no value and only cares about herself. She was fine with throwing away everything about her previous life and the one thing she actually wanted to do, just so she could kill Araragi and the gang. Because she couldn't have him. But I realize it's really unhealthy to view things in extremes like that, which can be particularly apparent when you regard people that way. Like with what Kaiki said, "人間なんだから。かけがえのない、かわりのないものなんかない." We can find something again if we keep looking for it.

Arifureta on hold right now because it's boring me to death with the ice dungeon arc and with how everyone is fighting "dark" versions of themselves and it just keeps going on and the harem keeps growing.

you have 2 options

the dekinai cope of the guy that knows translations are edited MTL at best, trannylations at worst
>copypaste line by line and replacing all japanse punctuation marks ?。、()with english ones ?.,()
>use a hover dictionary during your MTL so you get a better idea of what the words mean and when scuffed MTL sounds odd you know what the real thing is supposed to be
all things considered once you take this step MTL is not terrible, and yes it has to be line by line or it starts skipping shit, and even with this it can start skipping shit
people will call this sacrilege and it is, but if you really don't give a shit about learning once you learn to read between the MTL lines it's not THAT bad, and by that i mean it's not worse than official translations
besides you will start picking up shit passively for the other option anyway

and two, the autistic balls deep approach
>speedrun your kana and the first 2 grades of joyo kanji
>skim a grammar guide, particularly particles (including sentence end particles) and (basic) verb conjugation, doesn't matter which, use the sakubi one if you don't know what to go with, cure dolly also exists
>just start reading while referencing either a dictionary or a grammar guide when you see a kanji or conjugation/particle you don't know
despite what dekinais may lead you to believe japanese is not hard to understand grammatically until keigo and yakuwarigo start spanking you
the difficulty comes from just memorizing conjugations/particles and vocab (kanji)
learn kanji as words when you see them used, not as raw kanji, it will make it exponentially easier, you will never use 80% of the readings anki vomits on you
the important thing here is to not translate, but try understand it in japanese without translating, once you start doing this you will at some point just feel it "click" and you will just "get it" and then it's smooth sailing from there
if you get stuck on something for more than 15 minutes just skip the line and guess off context, leave it for a reread in the future, that's what translators do too anyway
try saying out loud what you read too, for whatever reason i found that helps memorization for me

regardless of what you do, reminder to use poricom for scans, it's in the OP, kanjitomo is outdated AF
