So I'm learning Japanese but one thing keeps confusing me.

Why is there so many forms of but? でも、けど、だけど、しかし、けれども etc. What the hell? How can I figure out when to use each form?

And also, how do I connect verbs? Like, for example, "I can write and read Japanese." Would I connect the verbs with と or　や or what?
