I liked it. I think some people bitch about the attempt at a danmaku battle in it being boring, but given it's ink on paper I think it did a good job really. It wasn't intended as a shounen, so I can excuse it not being 1:1 to the games.
Overall I'd happily read another one like it, way better than jobbing "detective" satori.

I've never seen any hate for it to the degree where I'd think it's a disliked piece of 2hu media. Maybe it's a recency bias since Detective Satori has basically become the truly crucified work that it'd make me forget how people felt about stuff prior, but I'm really not sure.
That being said, SSiB isn't really the best either. It's just... okay.

Jokes aside, the fact it ended in a de facto status quo shouldn't be that much of a surprise, and given it's a spinoff I don't see how it could have been anything much else. That's just not ZUN's style.

It was meant to be a companion piece to CiLR, so a lot of characterization was lost if you just read the manga.
The Moonies in SSiB are just hollow, boring characters, and their pet rabbit is a giant nothing character only done to get the story rolling.

Aside from Gappy's 5d chess move, there's also the plot hole mentioned in another thread that boiled down to 'If the moonies only had two strong defenders, then why didn't they think Yukari would attack with three? The brain of the moon can't into math, ironic that Yukari tells Ran off for the same thing: “You can do calculations on astronomical levels and yet it seems like you can’t add single digits.”

She's great, but I'll be damned if she didn't get the short end of the stick. It was hot and heavy with ZUN's insistence that she has no autonomy and can't do anything not explicitly told to her. So she came off as an idiot who can't read the room or use any of that scary amount of intelligence befitting a youkai of her caliber, but aren't girls just the cutest when they're almost retarded?

Moon bitches BTFO'd already established characters that fans liked despite only making their first real appearance. I mean they do get humbled by Hecatia and the fairies and Yukari's plan is explained in Cage in Runaticgate but most people don't even know that.
Ran is portrayed as a drooling retard that cant keep up with Yukari despite being smarter than 99% of the cast.
Fights were honestly kinda shit.
The only good thing about this manga is Ran being built like a plaphog. I like to wave that in the face of Canontards who hate good looking women.
