The base tracklist in WWP is pretty bad, and I'm immeasurably glad I'm not paying the extortionate DLC prices. Thank you emulation.
Sixteen dollars for ten songs, eat shit and fuck off. I know they don't expect people to buy all of the packs, but if I just want four of them, I'd be spending $64 on 40 DLC songs for a $60 game that comes with 100 songs.

Playing with the sticks on a controller is pure ass, using the d-pad and face buttons with the triggers is better pretty much 100% of the time if you're on a plain controller.
Also, I hope you turned off in-game SFX if you're emulating, because there's massive audio lag. I was trying to figure out why 10s and up were so sloppy feeling to play no matter how much I fucked with the offset, and that turned out to be the problem. Recalibrated my offset once after, and it's been smooth sailing.

>What's even the point then, that's like keyboard IIDX.
playing GC with analog sticks is like trying to draw with a mouse
you could do it, you could even get good at it, but it's just a bad option
it's a game with two 8-way sticks and two digital buttons

I guess you could fuck around with building a controller if you don't want to spend like $360 on a controller after shipping for the Yuancon one.
I saw this fucked up looking thing that basically mounts atop two Seimitsu sticks and uses two 60mm buttons.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3700741

I have a bootleg-ass solution I use sometimes by using a Smash TV controller (it's just a pair of arcade sticks), but it's not perfect, or even close -- not having the button on top makes it rough for some songs, even if it's better than a plain controller for others.
If I could mount a button onto the sticks themselves, it really would work.

could even use a fucking Virtual-On controller, but those are expensive and I don't have one
and the throw on the sticks is going to be really fucking far, so not great for rhythm games

>> No.45870976

>>45870894
I don't care enough about GC to either make/buy a controller or play it with a boring as fuck button-only control scheme just because it's relatively optimal. Don't really own any viable ghetto substitute either.
All I'm saying is that the Switch tracklist is too small for how much cancer is in it AND that playing it on a regular controller ranges from uncomfortable to not very fun. On a cab it's probably good, but I wouldn't know.

My nearest R1 is PLM (shit, it's the only one in FL), and the game selection is... not amazing. I pretty much only go for IIDX and SDVX, with maybe some Wacca or Chunithm if those two cabs are in use.

I'm Glad I Main SDVX in NYC, what I am not glad about is the only arcade I can actually main. Chinatown Fair (Middle Pin) is like 3 - 6$ a game now (If you don't preload all at once) and it's hardly worth it. If I can, I could save up 40$ for Round1 Hicksville (Right Pin) but They removed most of the games I would want to play there, Diva, GC, and they got rid of the SDVX Nemsys cabs, so no multiplayer. only got to enjoy it once. (Also, Gitadora Guitarfreaks was down when I went. and they didn't once bother to fix the machine.)

I'd like to go to 8otb (Left Pin), but Traveling to NJ is a nightmare, and it's far into NJ as well. at least for me.

And no pop'n music. it's all DDR, PIU (maybe), or that, ITG & SMX & SDVX & Jubeat at CTF (for high prices).

I think going so underground did the most damage. The games even without the 15 layers of private communities and the drama therein are difficult enough to penetrate into. If people would have been more liberal with private setups in public places you might have had actual new players but instead any player that even insinuated there might be an alternative way to playing other than flying to japan was crucified by the entire community. Konami is gay though and I'm glad people aren't being held hostage by the hope that any of their games have a future anymore.

HD becoming the new standard definitely put a dent in the genre that has never quite healed.

>> No.45982354

The thing that has probably done more damage to rhythm games than anything else overall is fucking laggy-ass screens (and in the case of playing on PC, audio latency, although that could probably be mostly fixed by devs using exclusive audio mode, there's no fucking reason for any other audio to come up while you're playing anyway).
Calibrating shit feels bad 100% of the time and is basically a non-starter for someone who isn't already into rhythm games.

Shit, for a while, the only shit I played was on handhelds because those had fixed specs for screens, so the developer had to design around that.
Trying to play shit on PC just didn't feel as good, so I didn't bother for ages. It's still a pain in the ass playing on PC for anything without exclusive mode for audio since I can never get the latency low enough otherwise, and a lot of games don't have a nice way to do interactive calibration.

Konami being fucking cunts and ensuring that their big name rhythm games have no presence outside of Asia sure as fuck doesn't help one bit either.
Imagine a world with DDR cabs that aren't fucking 20 years old outside of a tiny handful of arcades that cater to enthusiasts and have rare shit or the smattering of Round 1 locations.
I guess Pump will always have players since you can actually find cabs lol, but that's it.

Plus, none of the rhythm games that ordinary people know are around in any kind of accessible way, and even for people who aren't complete normalfags (but aren't the kind of people that would come here), it's just rough as hell to get into the genre now.
It's goofy as fuck to think about how something as big as Guitar Hero is fucking stone dead in the public eye. I've never met anyone who knew it became a 6 key game, lmao.

God, so much shit is also behind discord channels too, and thus entirely impenetrable to outsiders.
The whole situation is just ass all around.

Konami is a traditional Japanese company, which are known for their risk-minimization. They really won't do business with anyone unless it's large company/chain which is why E-amuse didn't officially come to United States until R1 decided to expand there, for DDR, D&B had to step (ha!) in so they could together order the minimum required amount of cabs for e-amuse.

perspective from a guy who doesn't play rhythm games might be insightful also no you can't unsubscribe from my blog.
recently, I went to an arcade filled with rhythm games to try them out, mostly because I love electronic hardcore music, and for once, I live in an area where I can access that sort of thing.
I first tried out beatmania, I tried looking for a song I liked but you had zero time to search so two out of three songs I picked weren't what I wanted and that bummed me out. one thing I don't like is that these games expect you to know the song list in advance.
I left the machine because a lot of people wanted to play it, so I tried out pop'n music next. exact same problem happened to me music picking wise. I also had an issue where the easy levels were too easy and the medium levels were too hard. gameplay wise its the only game where I didn't enjoy myself mainly for that reason. still, the artstyle is so fucking good so I didn't really care.
jubeat was really nice but it didn't have many songs, I don't know what's up with that. is it related to the e-card shit? if it had more songs I think I would have mostly played it. its very fun.
sound voltex was also really neat, I loved the knobs, and it had a lot of touhou songs but I have no idea how to navigate the giant song list unfortunately.
maimai was constantly hogged by very insane people so I couldn't try it unfortunately.
taiko no tasujin gave me zero issues, the medium level felt "medium" and I had a lot of time to pick a song.
there was an in the groove machine and it had very surprising music in it that I really loved and didn't expect to be there, but the charting was really really bad or non existent for easier difficulties unfortunately.
in general though it's very overwhelming but that's not bad if you want to filter people. but it's hard to get into even when you're patient. I also constantly felt like an asshole for taking away the machines from people who wanted to play seriously. besides taiko I felt every game was kind of hostile to me for not knowing it in advance.

>> No.46008545

>>46008119
iidx is definitely hostile to beginners. nearly all the content is for 10s and up which would take a raw beginner ages to get to. it has step up but that's it. it has 2000 songs but you have no time to pick and most of them are only accessible again at 10 or up. generally the lower level charts suck and it really feels like you're playing a butchered chart. they are either braindead or impossible for your skill level. then you finally play a song and unless you get a AA, which you won't as a beginner, you get a barebones ass results screen. and if you fail you're booted from the cab. iidx does not care about you because it knows what it is and it's audience. i'm 8th dan and still feel like i haven't really reached the "meat" of the game because i can't play 12s

ironically iidx probably has the most of the music that you're looking for

>IIDX and pop'n
Both IIDX and pop'n are infamous for their difficulty. Song select timer was likely reduced by the operator to increase the throughput since you mentioned others wanted to play.
>Jubeat
Yep. Get the card.
>In the Groove
You likely played on a Stepmania-converted cab.
>non existent for easier difficulties
The owner likely put community ITG tech charts on it out of preference. The gritty reality is that pretty much no rhythm game community charts for anything below their own level, meaning that beginners or intermediate players are left with jack shit. It's a shitty practice.
>I also constantly felt like an asshole for taking away the machines from people who wanted to play seriously.
Don't. Pretty much everyone out there likes new players and are often willing to help out beginners to get them to start playing.
>I felt every game was kind of hostile
I really can't blame you with such a negative introduction leaving a sour taste.
Neither IIDX or Pop'n is very forgiving in terms of difficulty and muches credits like crazy. And in case of Stepmania, that's really the fault of the operator. I had to bring a USB with a selection of DDR converts as custom songs for a good while.

only webpage i can think of that helped me a ton is iidx.org, it gives some great tips on how to navigate iidx's cryptic menus and gives tips on how to grow as a player and git gud more effectively, but for other games theres not too many english resources like that, a lot of it boils down to just playing more. but feel free to ask other players in the arcade for tips, almost all of them absolutely love seeing other people get into their favorite games

>> No.46010341

in IIDX, I tend to just go straight for the level folders and thumb around randomly until time runs out, same with SDVX
if I'm somewhere with premium free available (my R1 had it available for 1 credit, shit's nice), I do just have to beeline for shit I know though so I can get my 6 songs in before the 10min timer expires
fucking blows if I'm looking around and take so long that the timer expires just as the 5th song ends

the one place I go that has maimai, it's literally always crowded unless you get there right after they open for the day
you have to just stand in line lol
god, I wish there was another maimai cab anywhere else within 70 miles

also, never feel bad about being there when "better" players are there
sweaty rhythm game nerds don't deserve any special treatment, they need to get in line too
it does suck trying to practice when there is a line though, so I understand not wanting to get on and blow chunks while people are waiting
IIDX is easily the worst game when it comes to the initial learning cliff and then it gets better (in spurts), so invest in a controller at some point even though playing in the arcade ends up feeling better anyway

>>46008545
older pre-10th IIDX lower level charts feel like they aren't butchered, but they're also a lot harder for someone new
one thing that really gets me is that most rhythm games seem aggressively hostile to people who aren't invested already

there's genuinely nothing good about kicking people off the cab early so I dunno why games do this shit (Pump is fucking awful about this)
either you get like two credits more from a pro who will just make the hard song his last one
you keep someone learning to get better from trying hard shit after they got burned
or you alienate a newbie forever, they play something out of their league (almost everything), immediately fail, and that's it

bemani does at least prevent the lowest few folders from ending your credit if you fail on them, but it has so many negatives without much financial gain for the operator
pretty much everyone gets their full 3 songs except people new to the game

>>46008817
Can the operator even change the song select timer in (current) IIDX? I'm almost certain you can't in SDVX (there are barely any operator settings at all lmao) and it fucking sucks there, but I don't know shit with the operator settings in IIDX.

>> No.46027668

>>46025769
Depends a bit on what you have available and what you're interested in. In any case, if you have an arcade near you with rhythm games, just try out whatever they have and go from there.

If not or you are specifically looking for stuff you can play at home without a big barrier of entry, personally Id recommend DJMax Respect the most as it strikes a good balance of being approachable (in terms of difficulty and also flashiness/giving you things to do/like before you get to the point where you fully appreciate just hitting buttons) but also teaching you enough fundamentals to transfer to other games.
Quaver or Etterna are the best free alternatives, but they are much more to the point and probably less appealing to a beginner, but you should check them out either way since they're free (and Etterna in particular is definitely the peak of 4k games currently). Other than that, Arcaea is not too bad either. If you have a Playstation and it happens to be on sale, Superbeat Xonic is fun (was my first rhythm game), but compared to other stuff it's relatively underwhelming.

>> No.46029189

Arcaea.
Mobile version is F2P with optional song packs whereas Switch version is $40, but includes pretty much all song packs released up until it was released on Switch.
Another good choice to start with is A Dance of Ice and Fire (Steam) although it's generally not considered a full rhythm game.

was adding some BMS packs to beatoraja and it just locks up when starting if it doesn't like a song in the pack, what a pain in the ass
happened twice when adding some rips from game data, was wondering what the fuck was going on for a bit
data was crashing randomly for me, probably because I fucked something up or downloaded a bad copy, so I ended up just getting BMS conversions

slowly increasing the playback speed in mBMplay to practice shit that I absolutely can't read, going up a semitone each time I play from -12 to fullspeed
ended up doing this since can't even do the slower 3rd style version of THE SAFARI on normal with easy gauge lmao (I can do it on assist but like, assist is way too forgiving), the end of the song is AIDS (pic related tanks my gauge every time)
but I also fuck up a bunch of the rest too

probably nowhere near good enough in general to do it on normal, but I keep feeling like I'm not actually progressing if I stick to shit near my range since I just don't see any weird patterns come up like here

shit man, the beatoraja devs were toying around with the idea of hard-blocking files that didn't have enough keysounds in them which is immeasurably hyper gay

Man, I need to get back into SDVX. It's my fault for being a cheapass back when I had money, and now that I'm (temporarily?) broke, I can't get a proper controller since I don't have $250 to blow without feeling the pinch.
Dense patterns and hand trip stuff hasn't been too bad when I visit R1, but my ability to deal with weird laser bullshit is dropping fast from not playing it enough (a trip to R1 and back is a quarter tank of gas so it's rare that I go).
My bootleg-ass cardboard SDVX controller just doesn't work well enough for me to keep using anymore, not without me spending a bunch of money to build it properly (in particular, I'd need to buy actual knobs, and then ideally make the body out of not-cardboard, probably be like $50-60, bleh).

My bootleg-ass IIDX controller has issues too, but works better and I'm now addicted to IIDX. I still need to make it better (also another $50), but it works well enough for now.
