Please read 2-3 sites before playing and even then try the singleplayer games first.
Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so don't expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

There are ways to minimize your losses, unlike poker where you can be priced into a pot that you can't get away from. I've heard endless cooler and bad beat stories from poker players and never anything from mahjong players.

1 -4 han: Variable from 1000-8000 points depending on the fu value of your hand. It'll be roughly 1000 -> 2000 -> 4000 -> 8000, but less if you have a lot of chi melds.
5 han: 8000 points
6-7 han: 12000 points
8-10 han: 16000 points
11-12 han: 24000 points
13+ han: 32000 points

Multiply by 1.5x if you're the dealer, and multiply by 2/3 if you tsumoed for it in 3p.

I used http://www.ofb.net/~whuang/ugcs/gp/mahjong/mahjong.html to learn the value and makeup of yaku, and I think it's a good resource. Just make sure you know that it lists some yaku that Tenhou doesn't support.

I play both and I only talk about bad luck in poker since nobody else understands mahjong. Getting bad luck is pretty common in any gambling game. For example, I was just in a game where a guy declares riichi on the 5th discard (ryanman wait) and another guy goes from a 1 pair hand to a suuankou in 7 discards. Most amazing thing I've ever seen, but trying to explain what all that means to someone who doesn't play mahjong is really difficult. Whereas for poker most people can understand basic stuff like "A's hand is better than B's hand right now but B got a card that makes his hand better than A's".

Rule #1: When playing in 7447, try to declare richi on a terminal or honors wait. Fags discard terminals and honors like candy. I don't think I ever had to wait more than 10 turns before somebody discarded the terminal or honor I needed or I drew it myself.

In 4p, yes. Since it's hard enough to get into tenpai at all, you will probably end up with a ryanmen wait or something like that. You don't have much of a choice.

In 3p, you can wait on anything, be it a 1m, a 9m or even a Pei (after you used one as a nukidora) since you don't have to throw out every honor you draw because they would keep you from reaching tenpai in 4p.

You're probably doing it wrong. You can't attack and defend at the same time. Learn to completely give up on a hand and only discard 100% safe tiles (or at least the safest ones in your hand), disregarding not being in tenpai anymore for that pinfu dora 1 worth 2k points.

As for learning how to read discards, start with reading suji (someone who discarded a 2 and a 8 probably won't be waiting on a 5, someone who discarded a 6 will less likely be waiting on a 9). Then you can start using more complex tricks, like an early discarded 2 can mean the opponent might have an incomplete 4-5 ryanmen wait, etc. You can also use Kabe, if you have a triplet of 8, and the last 8 is discarded, that means nodody can complete a wait using a 8.
