I'm basically ignorant of it too and don't even really know about the Tale of Genji but enjoyed it. I just went into it knowing it was about Murasaki Shikibu, and when I started watching I recognised Abe no Seimei although he's called Abe no Haruakira in the show.
I haven't watched Heike Monogatari but I imagine that's much harder to understand considering the source material whereas this is a modern take on history that from what I can tell takes some liberties to make a more interesting story. There are a LOT of Fujiwaras though.
It's basically about scheming in the imperial palace and nobles being assholes and competing for influence. Murasaki Shikibu is the protagonist but Fujiwara no Michinaga (who was supposedly one of the inspirations for Genji) seems to be a secondary protagonist and we'll be shown how Shikibu came to write the Tale of Genji and how Michinaga came to become the most important man in Japan second to the emperor.
The torrent on nyaa has JP subs which makes things easier to follow.

SABU hasn't stuck with his trademark style since the mid 00s (he did come back to it late in his career with Jam), he's been experimenting with different styles since then, and 'My Blood & Bones in a Flowing Galaxy' is one of his experiments, so it's understandable if some people dislike it. The twists at the latter part might have been too much for some people who expected a stereotypical Japanese school drama and romance, especially the ending. To people who know SABU, the final act was either something to be expected or a happy surprise after the misleading premise. The dubious title makes so much sense, too, and it hits hard after the realization. This film is made to be watched more than once to get all the Easter Eggs.

What easter eggs? My problem with it is when in that last quarter they go and try to fish the suitcase out of the water instead of going straight to the police, the script requires the characters to do something stupid so that we can get the chilling moment of "that's my mom's suitcase". And then the ending is so rushed that I didn't even understand if they reunite or it's a different girl because it's all so rushed and then in the epilogue she never says anything to reference the entire flashback portion. I guess some people might think it's clever that 1) he doesn't save her And 2) the prologue is the main character's son before we go into a flashback that lasts 95% of the movie and I guess some maybe couldn't tell but I noticed the first mom is not the same as the second one. There were some good scenes like when she says "we always only talk about me... I don't even know what you like" and the UFO imagery was well done. So yeah, ending felt sloppy.
