Someone else can chime in who has tried it at Shibuya, but having used SUICA in Tokyo I can say that if you were in a station too long, the card would automatically fail.
When this happened to me, I just explained in broken Japanese and preemptively offered to pay, but they let me through without charging. They may be less gracious if it is clear you did it in an attempt to save money.

Kushiroshitsugen was one of my favorite train stations on Hokkaido.
Sakkuru Station and Osashima Station are pretty cool if you are looking for stations in the middle of nowhere.

The new construction appears to be a metal viewing deck. This will be a very slippery surface and subject to piles of snow which regularly slides off the heated roof of the onsen. It will fail immediately.

They are just different stations.
Yunokami is modeled to be similar to the nearby Ochijuku. Ashinomakionsen station is much more like the other manned station before Tajima, Shimogo.
