Apologies if I ramble or just straight up get shit wrong, it's past midnight on New Years and I'm still a bit tipsy. We understand meteorology/the weather up to several weeks in advance because of a series of systems that can be vastly overly simplified down to "we shoot shit up in the air to monitor it and the things surrounding it for miles and crossreference that with a century of that stuff". There's a billion other factors at play and I don't have a degree so I can't tell you the absolute specifics, but the point is that we can track the air because it is just that: air. Borderline non-existent matter that exists all around us at every waking moment of the day in a 3 dimensional plane.

We can't reliably predict earthquakes and how they happen because a lot of what happens is locked behind miles of bedrock in multiple directions that, frankly, even if we were somehow able to dig to the core of the Earth I don't think we'd ever truly understand. We'd only just have that one line in that one area. We understand what tectonic plates are and how they work exclusively because of their aftermath by looking at the surface afterall; hell we've only just in these past few years come close to drilling into a tectonic plate and even that's a technicality that's more for sampling than it is discovering what goes on within and beyond them. Still a major step for geology and don't get me wrong there.

Korea is located on old and stable ground. On the other hand, the Japanese archipelago is located on four plates that are pushing against each other and pressing against each other. As a result of this movement, the ground rose and the Japanese archipelago was formed. Their movements also cause volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and resulting tsunamis.

Still they are lucky it happened near the coast of Ishikawa, it's not the most densely populated area of Japan, imagine if it happened in the middle of Tokyo with this magnitude and at a shallow depth, you can imagine the disaster it would have been.
Sure there is a tsunami warning, but it's still better than a huge earthquake just under your feet, at least you have time to evacuate, you have time to go to safety, your chance of survival is way better.

This is a scale that shows the magnitude of the shaking
At scale 3, there is almost no damage.
At scale 4, things can fall off shelves.
At scale 5, various types of destruction and damage are assumed.
At scale 6, people can die.
There are no scales higher than scale 7. When the scale was invented 100 years ago, scale 7 was defined as the scale at which everything would be destroyed. Currently, it is calculated from the observed acceleration.
This time, the maximum acceleration observed was 2.7G horizontally and 1.1G vertically. In other words, the building briefly floated in the air.

Honestly being at the epicenter and surviving with little injury must be even more surreal these days than in the past.

Suddenly find yourself cut off physically from the rest of the world, your whole physical life and day-to-day has just been literally torn up. Now the locality is in a weird place where some trivial services and infrastructure made it through immediately unaffected, there will be roads, rails, buildings that were just fine yesterday that will now remain in time to be decayed or torn down as whatever people and organizations kept them maintained will also struggle.

Meanwhile you're likely still connected to the outside world as long as one of the townspeople has a working long-distance connection and a power source. So you could be seeing the response online well before national-level response.

If the tsunami is high enough, nothing stops it completely.
But you can see those concrete reef things breaking up the waves and disrupting their flow. If there were people still evacuating then that is at least giving more time.

>> No.45682608

>>45682502
>So, all these artificial reefs made with concrete along the coast of Japan are totally useless
They absorbed a significant amount of the kinetic forces in the initial surge, which both results in the tsunami taking longer to reach the adjacent shore and the force of that impact being less destructive.

So no, they are not totally useless. The water needs to go somewhere, it is primarily redirecting it.
They are also not that impactful once you get the kind of forces that would propel water deep into the town, in the same way that a normal coast wouldn't be. If a place is just going to be inundated by the tsunami, you could have the best coastal barriers but still have the flooding come from the riverside (see 2011 videos).

They already know it's not a supernatural thing. Their idea of praying isn't to have gods do something for you. It's part of your state of mind to put the effort in to make those things happen.

that's what I thought. I like how their spirituality isn't based on the whims of god(s), unlike all the Middle-east-originated religions we're familiar with in the West.
