Funny, I have the exact opposite opinion. The second half was where the show went bad in my opinion. Of course, its semi-philosophical nature probably appealed a lot to people back when they were 13. But the monster-of-the-week segments have more timeless appeal and entertainment.

Not at all. I'm pointing out that a 10, 20, or 30-year old can all equally sit back and enjoy the action scenes. On the other hand, I doubt Hideaki Anno's self-wankery and shallow take on psychological and philosophical issues would appeal to any emotionally mature person. Which is why I believe it has so much adolescent appeal and became extremely popular, but whatever.

Serial Experiments Lain. While objectively it probably isn't the best anime I've watched (although it is certainly one of the top shows around, it kind of saddens me when I rewatch it and realize it isn't as incredibly good as I remember it being in my memory) it is definitely my personal favorite and will most likely always remain that.

As common as this answer is: Eva, Lain, NHK (in no particular order)

I'm the opposite of most people when it comes to Eva. I tried to watch it when I was younger and was turned off by the mecha. "This is stupid, mecha don't make any sense. They're fighting aliens or something? Fuck this." Years later, I picked it up again, realized that it was more than just a mecha show, and chastised myself for dismissing it so easily.

I stayed around for the overwhelming atmosphere of dread, the horribly (and with good reason, not emo whiny bullshit) depressing characters, and the psychology. In particular, the deconstruction of the characters toward the end was fun to chew on.

Serial Experiments Lain has rekindled my interest in all kinds of things, from artificial intelligence, to the idea of a man-machine interface, to that feeling that everyone seems to have that "something big is going to happen" soon.

NHK isn't up to snuff with the previous two, but it's still a fairly interesting and unoptimistic portrayal of the whole hikkomori thing.

Just about all other anime I've watched is (whether I enjoyed it or not at the time) either the stuff of horribly naive fantasy or trying to be something like Lain or Eva and missing the point entirely, becoming emo whiny bullshit/DEEEEEP in the process.

Survey, recommendation, and /b/ template threads are the mark of newcomers. Just in the last hour I took a screencap of these. Then you wonder why it got imagebombed.

Also, /a/ threads don't belong here. /jp/ used to have rules that said "all things Japan are welcomed." But that didn't stop the mods from deleting Naruto threads. You guys act as if the name change means we're old-old /b/ now. If anything, the rules became more strict.

Also, most /jp/ers want to discuss anime and video games but if the aforementioned topics were allowed here it would attract /a/ and /v/ users. Tell me this op, if you wanted to discuss anime and manga. Why didn't you make it on /a/? What's that? You don't want to discuss these topics with /a/'s user base? Another question. What makes you think the quality of our user base would remain the same if anime and video game topics were allowed here? Build it and they will come. Allow it, and they will multiply.

You specifically said Sailor Moon was one of my first anime. Sorry if I misunderstood but that's the way it looked to me.

>>4560438 If everyone ignores a shitty thread, it goes away. If everyone ignores it and makes a comment or two on how shitty it is and how shitty the posters sincerely responded to it are, while saging, it does a very good job of deterring newbies. The moment you start imaging spamming, you are basically admitting that you have lost all faith in your board to ignore troll threads and harass idiots, and it becomes clear that your board has fallen to a new demographic.

That said, I don't think anime threads should be
"allowed", but I don't mind when one or two slip through the cracks. The rationale is simple:

>> No.4560583

If you make a board about certain topics, it gets filled with the worst kind of people interested in said topic. There are intelligent people with good taste who are interested in the topic out there, but they, inevitably, get overpowered by aspies, weeaboos, idiots, teenagers, etc. eventually.
If you make a board about a more obscure topic, it becomes populated with (hopefully) more of that cream of the crop. Make a thread in there that another board covers (like anime or video games in /jp/, /co/, or /tg/) and you'll have a far better discussion than you would have in the intended board itself.

One of the things I do like about 4chan over other chans is that mods are more lax about "what goes where." The thing is, it's not like /v/ is the place for 4chan browsers to discuss video games, for example. It's the place for people who are mostly interested in video games to hang out. There are people that hang out on single boards only; at that point, it's not a matter of the community having a place to discuss a topic as it is a different community entirely. For that reason, I can not rely on /v/ to be a good place to talk about video games any more than I can rely on /a/ to be a good place to talk about anime.

I don't see the problem with someone making a thread about a GOOD anime every now and then, but if I started seeing threads about "what anime are you watching this season" pop up here, I'd probably have to get out of jp.jpg

Oh, and for the record, Haibane Renmei was pretentious emo shit.

>> No.4560591

I said taht IN GENERAL is many people anime, not especially referring to you, since the usual population in 4chan doesn't usually exceed the 30 years, it's quite common for anime like Sailor Moon to be one of your first animes, just that
Also I didn't even criticize it nor your enjoyment, even called it excellent (even if the Stars season is shit)

I just see it like this. Rules and regulations are what keeps out bad users. /b/ has no rules (i.e., no limitations) so it has the most topics and users. Anime and video games are more popular than Touhou and Visual Novels so they attract more users. Which is a good thing and a bad thing depending on how you feel about fast paced boards like /b/. For you guys to endorse this thread is the same thing as saying: "hey /a/nons, you're allowed to discuss Naruto on /jp/."

>>4559594
And before you call me an elitist. I just want to say you already have a board for discussing anime and manga. If you honestly don't see the difference between /a/ and /jp/'s userbase then why not discuss it there. The more niche the topics are the better the userbase. /tg/ is regarded by some to have the best userbase on 4chan. That's because /tg/ is a gathering of niche topics.

>> No.4560702

I don't have favorites. I like a lot of shows. I don't want to come out as an oldfag but I like older shows more than what's out there right now. For some reason new shows right now don't really interest me, and no I don't think I'm growing out of the 'anime' age.

Once in a while a decent/great show comes out. But right now things fall in one of four categories:
Moe-moe bullshit (Looking at you Hanmaru)
Ecchi shit with tits and ass (Qwaser, Queen's Blade)
'DEEP' shit (Ookamikakushi)
Shounen crap/kids shows (Letter Bee, Cobra)

Haibane Renmei starts off interesting enough, spending some time going over the life of each character in some kind of simple utopia.

Suddenly, main character's best friend (the least interesting of all the characters) dies and main character does a fucking nosedive into emo waters, complete with overreactions and BAWWWW YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ME.

Combine that fucking melodramatic trainwreck with religious references and you get the most pretentious piece of shit ever crapped out across a satellite TV network. How can you guys even pretend to like it?

And yet, they have no problem with discussing the more niche aspects of larger topics (like, again, anime and video games from time to time). Go ahead, post a "what is your favorite video game" or a dwarf fortress/x-com/whatever thread on /tg/ and come back in 20 minutes. I'll wait.
Take a look at that thread. Surprised? Your thread is now filled with a bunch of posts ACTUALLY RELATED TO VIDEO GAMES, no one is getting mad, and the board is still working just fine. It didn't magically become flooded with /a/ or /v/ users either!

There's a difference between an /a/ anime thread and a /tg/ (or just about any of the other niche board) anime thread that is very easy to see. I, for one, believe I can trust /jp/ to see it, and ignore the ones that belong in the shitholes.

Look at it like this:
1. No one from outside of /jp/ comes here except to talk about VNs.
2. Most of the people in /a/ don't like VNs.
3. People who don't browse /jp/ either see it as the realm of pathetic hardcore weeaboos (which, ironically, everyone here knows isn't true, we're just pathetic hikkis) or a place full of elitist assholes who sage everything.

Therefore, /jp/ will never ever "become" /a/, because anyone who tries to troll here will get ignored, and anyone who honestly tries to talk about anything that isn't "/jp/ related" will get saged to death.
PEOPLE ARE FUCKING SCARED OF /jp/, WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT PEOPLE FROM /a/ SHITTING THE PLACE UP. IT'S OK, YOU CAN TALK ABOUT ANIME EVERY NOW AND THEN

I've never really thought about it that way. But I'll still be somewhat hostile towards guest. I remember one time when I tried to make a Touhou thread on /m/ and it was greeted with "get back to /jp/" spam. Their hostile reaction to my Touhou thread sent me the message that I wasn't wanted there. I haven't been back there since.

And your /tg/ analogy is somewhat different from our situation on /jp/ because /tg/'s rules are pretty straight forward. /jp/ on the other hand has ambiguous rules. And by that I mean /tg/'s janitors can make faster decisions on what belongs or not. While on /jp/ our moderation takes much longer. To reiterate, /tg/ is protected by its rules. The people of /o/ for example don't have to worry about their board being invaded by Naruto threads because it's blatantly obvious that those threads don't belong there. Consequently, the users of /o/ let the moderators handle it.
