I just realized something.

I saw 私 in shounen written out both in kanji and kana.
When the speech bubble allows it, it's written in kana. When there is too much text to fit in, it's written in kanji.
Very convenient way to save on space, and in this case, it can also serve as a way to empathize on something, like when you write "わたし", it manipulates the reading speed and can create a dramatic or surprising effect.
English can't do this.

Kanji are genuinely good for being compact, yeah. It's why old games would only let you write a handful of characters in chatboxes etc
They just massively increase how long it takes to actually learn the language as a cost (at least for adult media).
If you're interested in that kind of thing, there are multiple spelling reform suggestions for english which would turn it into a syllabary like hiragana, rather than an alphabet. Obviously, this would fix a lot of the issues with english spelling and be more compact to boot, while only requiring people to learn ~30 or so new characters (depending on the implementation). Shavian Script is the first one that comes to mind.

i wouldn't really say のに and にしては are fully synonymous but they're definitely related. and you would generally understand most sentences if you thought of it that way.

but のに is a stronger contrast i feel like, comes out to "even though" in english often. AにしてはB is more like "for an A this is more / less B than i thought" or "for being A this is quite B" (more or less than i expected basically).

I've been at it for 40 days now, and still at only about 78 mature cards in my core 2k/6k deck.
But with the core deck + the Kanji deck, it's already taking me two hours or more each day to get through the 5-10 new words/Kanji and all my reviews.

At this rate, it's going to take a year before I can even realistically start mining. Any advice? doing 20+ new words a day doesn't really seem possible for me. Maybe i'm just fucking dumb.

Regarding the Kanji deck - I've got it set up to show me 10 new Kanji a day - based on the upcoming Kanji in the core deck. Is it not worth it to learn the Kanji in this way too? If I just focus on the core deck, my worry is that I won't know the proper meaning of each Kanji when I come across them in different words. I'm not concerned about the pronunciation of the Kanji when I do the Kanji deck, just the meaning.
But it's not worth doing the Kanji separately you think?

I appreciate the advice, I'll ditch the Kanji deck from tomorrow onwards and just focus on the core deck. I see you're point, it does reason that with enough time and frequency I'll pick up the meaning of the kanji when I see it enough, and can always look up individual ones as I need.
