I have some theories concerning gohda and battler but they don't seem to work out. Everyone assumed Gunhild faked her death because of that one data fragment where she's revealed as a mole. But all those scenes take place in the past, so it's very likely that she did get killed. You can't simply fake being blown up into pieces by a missile in front of Miyao. There is one data fragment where she talks with Miyao and changes her worldview, so that's probably when she decides to betray the kings. This gets her killed at the end of the story and replaced with Chloe, who apparently got an invitation to the order around that time.

Lingji, on the other hand, is probably alive. Everyone assumed she was confirmed dead when Miyao made her head explode, but what if that was a clone made of the same material as the blue gauntlet girls? She was using the same golden gauntlet as them, so maybe she even had a blue body under her clothes like Blueyao. I always assumed the COU got ahold of those special golden gauntlets and gave one to her but... First off, the gauntlets are personalized and synchronized with the person's brain after a lot of testing, you can't suddenly give her a new one and expect her to perform well in the battlefield. Second, she was literally using her original gauntlet a few scenes earlier. And third, was she even in the same country as Miyao in those scenes? I remember the COU having two different border disputes, and I think Lingji was in another battlefield. If that's the case, it has to be a clone, she couldn't possibly travel to the other side of the planet to fight Miyao over the glass sea.

As for Miyao, I think he's definitely a program inserted into the brain of his sister to take over her life and be useful for Toujirou, and probably has some sort of hidden trigger that turns him into a psycho murderer. He's a copy of the memories of the real Miyao, who probably looked very different from his sister. The fact that he keeps misjudging the length of his arm is a hint that this isn't his original body, because it's the body of a short girl.

Gunhild isn't that interesting as a character so far, but still got a good chunk of exposition within phase 1. I could see her staying permanently dead in order to entrust the stage to other actors (e.g Chloe, Lilja) while still receiving characterization through data fragments.

That's a good point, don't think I've seen that one brought up yet. It's still hard to say if Miyao or Meow is the original personality, especially due to that one 'tea' scene with Toujirou, but one of them clearly doesn't belong.

I love how Miyao, Lingji and the other members of the public bath order realize the graveness of the situation at the very end and revoke their oath to not kill on the battlefield, so that every member has a chance to ensure their own future, while "outsiders" like Naima and the yuri idols hold out and protect their ideals until the very end, because they're fed up with the state of the world.

Shion grew up loved and spoiled by her family, but the one time she felt bad for her sister and tried to be selfless, her identity was accidentally stolen and she lost all her privileges. And she probably feels inadequate because she was never raised to be a cold person and wasn't taught any of the skills she's gonna need as the successor, so she has to pretend to be competent and improve herself in record time.

The Sonozaki are fucked up and should all be thrown in prison. No wonder Mion genuinely considered the possibility that Oryou is orchestrating the murders in Meakashi and Sotsu. Her beloved granny's love is bullshit and she knows it.

I never thought Mion needed a chapter at all, I think she has a ton of character throughout the vn and her not developing much actually benefits her imo. My interpretation of Mion is that to me, she encompasses a lot of Higurashi's core messages and themes. She's very deeply rooted in empathy and love, and places a lot of value in proper communication, which goes against the main evil of higurashi which is miscommunication and misunderstanding. It's why she never falls to the disease; she's not the type to retaliate or doubt her friends when scared. At worst, she'll run away.

Her iron trust in her friends is proven right at the beginning in Onikakushi, where it also tragically bites her in the ass. She and Rena refuse to leave Keiichi alone because in Mion's mind, he needs his friends now more than ever. She thinks Keiichi heard some bad rumors and is just afraid and she, along with Rena, does everything she can to try and make him feel at ease, tragically oblivious to what's really going on.

In one of her final scenes, she stands up against Takano to shield her friends. This reads as some epic hero moment but in reality, it really is Mion just being who she is. Her and Takano are complete oppossites of one another. Takano chose to be bitter about her life and let if fuel her hatred and mistrust in others, only seeing other people as stepping stones for her own ultimate goal. Mion on the other hand had so many opportunities in life to be bitter just like Takano. Life's fucked her in the ass so much, yet she very conciously chooses to live with a smile in the hopes that it puts others at ease. It's why she values the club so much; It's a place where she can unconditionally love her friends and be loved by them back, surrounding herself with smiles without any consequence. It may sound like she's forcing herself to be this way for the sake of others but it's what truly makes her happy as well.

She's also not just some genki girl like many anime only's think she is. Mion's the type to laugh at a joke at her expense from Keiichi during the day, then call Rena in the middle of the night and cry her eyes out about it. She's a troubled girl with a lot of confusing emotions who has to bear so much guilt and so much stress. Despite all that, she keeps making the decision to try and be the best she can be for the sake of her friends, because they are what truly make life worth living for her.

I agree with her family (not shion) needing to be jailed, they are fucking evil for what they did to these 2

She's a pillar of strenght within the group and again, she encompasses what Higurashi is all about, empathy, love, and trust in people you care about. I don't think she needed an arc per se, at least not in the main story. If she had an arc where she stood up against her family, it'd take away from Keiichi's role in the story, which is the be a new wind that can break the mold in this rural village with ancient traditions.

In Higurashi, the looper took over the piece's body. In Umineko, the looper simply watched as his piece acted in character. Ciconia seems to be a mix of both, since Blueyao lets Miyao act in character without possessing him but still interacts with him. It's like if Meta Battler appeared in front of Piece Battler to tell him the future and get him to act a certain way.

Although it's really weird how in-universe Miyao never acknowledges the presence of Blueyao or thinks about him at all. His conversations with him happen in some meta plane completely detached from the consciousness of the in-universe Miyao.

Heck, look at this profile for Tamaki where half of it hasn't really been reflected in the story at all (strong sense of justice causing problems while ignoring other people's thoughts, seeing herself as inheriting the position of leader of the 3 families and Hinamizawa in general).

Well, when the story ends without confirming your ship (you know, the same story where R07 already addressed how it'd be unfair to pair up a couple among the club member and leave others outside, so no one paired up with no one), you'll use that to dismiss it just like how you've done to Gou/Sotsu and Gou/Meguri.

Umineko re-explored the Miyoko/grandpa situation from Higurashi by having Ange successfully turn Maria and her ideas into a eternal existence, a "god".

Higanbana took the magic stuff from Umineko and created a society of magical beings that actually exist and make sense as forces of nature.

RGD explored even further some of the themes from Higanbana, especially the two chapters featuring Yukari. The loli from Higanbana became a fearless, violent bully to prevent others from taking her position and using it for evil. In RGD, Primavera becomes a fucking murderous mafia because someone has to be at the top of the underworld and it's better if that person has good intentions. The ends justify the means.

Ciconia seems to explore the failure to preserve Japanese culture from RGD (Miyao not giving a fuck about the ancient Tokyo), but also the fascinating idea of magic (or in this case, technology so advanced it could be considered magic) granting you absolute freedom from the laws of physics, which was a subtle theme in EP3 with Evatrice and EP7 with Yasu.

People who ignored Higanbana and RGD for 10 straight years while burning out on Umineko discussions are really missing out. Half the shit that Ciconia deals with was first introduced in RGD (characters fantasizing about a hypothetical device that translates languages automatically, and they also bring up the idea that modern videos and photos showing the atrocities of war will make humanity despise it, which is exactly what happened in the Ciconia backstory). The bonus chapter in "RGD - The Best" is literally foreshadowing for Ciconia. The present day characters talk about aliens, time travel, using drones for war instead of soldiers, technological improvements increasing military might to ridiculous levels, etc. The past characters also freak out about smartphones and wonder how much further technology will go from there (Selcom). They also imply that WW3 will break out in the future since this is alternate history where the nukes never dropped, so there's no anti-nuclear sentiment.

It's a straight line and you can see how his themes and concepts evolve naturally over time. Skipping straight to Ciconia makes you miss out on a TON of plot points and references that are supposed to be reminiscent of those two works and turn the concepts on their head. In fact, Ciconia feels a bit like a continuation of RGD. Both have nametags for the characters so you know who is speaking, four arcs in total, characters from different countries, a more concise writing style that doesn't drag scenes on for two hours... It really feels like a counterpart to RGD, similar to how Higurashi and Umineko had a similar structure and the same long-winded writing style.

Someone once proposed a theory about orphaned Naima being sexually humiliated on purpose to traumatize her and turn her into a DID schizo gauntlet knight. It's a combination of the realistic inner monologues that make you really perceive the cute female characters as humans, and the crazy stories that allow for insane humiliation. Higurashi has the club punishments, Satoko's abuse and Keiichi's rants about humiliation. Umineko has witches humiliating people and turning them into naked furniture, as well as Maria's bullying and fucking ANGE who is the queen of humiliation. Higanbana is all about loli-on-loli bullying and humiliation, including a scene where an Ange expy gets stripped naked by her classmates. Half of the RGD cast is prostitutes with hairy pussies and pits, including an underage prostitute and a former underage sex slave. And Ciconia has technology that allows any loli to mentally send self-deleting naked pics of herself to strangers, realistic avatars of people that can be used to produce porn, and the whole military complex relies on mentally ill nutjobs with a specific kind of personality disorder triggered by sexual trauma, so they have literally turned humiliation into a meticulous process to create super soldiers.

I wonder where Ciconia will go with its themes eventually, considering that Higurashi and Umineko went into pretty different directions. Being reminiscent of RGD, I feel like he'll touch upon cultural barriers and innate racism a bit more from phase 2 onwards.
Spending most of their time in virtual chatrooms made it seem as if the gauntlet knights all got along pretty well with each other despite their vastly differing upbringing, but then again, those were just chatrooms, and humans always act their best when they're around strangers. The rare scenes depicting other factions being among each other or talking to their superiors already hinted at a more complicated societal structure than what their behavior in the virtual room led us to believe.

And in all three series, instead of being locked up in a mental institution where they belong, the nutjobs obtain special powers. They can sense the supernatural, turn themselves into witches surrounded by magical furniture, or become super soldiers with the ability to fly.
