Really nice OST, OK cast, spell practice and last spells, nice extra, nice idea of using pairs, very good human/youkai scoring system. Now, if I had to point out a flaw, it would be the fucked up deathbombing.


If you're a beginner, the deathbombing makes it easymodo, and will penalize you for the next games where the DB isn't that lenient. But if you're a confirmed player, the deathbombing becomes a thorn in the foot as it costs you two bombs instead of one.

Still, even taking that flaw in consideration, it's my favourite.

Good characters, a helluva of PCs, 4 different styles to pick up, interesintg (but flawed) focus/unfocus shots/barrier. Deathbombs that cried 'NERF', interesting story and depiction of characters that lasts until today (MAlice) a new area to fuck around with, the best midboss ever, STUPID PATTERNS DEMAND MEMORIZATION OVER SKILL, Introduction of Last Spells/Final Words, Excellent music (inferior to the previous two titles though) IF I SEE THAT FUCKING FINAL SPARK ONE MORE TIME.

All in all, a vital, but by no means the best, part of the series.

IN sucks. The bombing is just awful in every way. From stage 3 onwards almost every non-boss bullet pattern can be dodged by streaming slowly from one end of the screen to the other (even on lunatic), which is boring as hell.

It has my favourite rendition of the title theme and it also gets a big plus for letting me choose Remi as a playable character. Other than that, I'm not really fond of the game. Maybe because it's so dark compared to other titles.

IN is the worst out of all the Windows games, save PoFV.

I can't really complain about the characters much (especially because Tewi), but in particular Kaguya and Mokou are just bad. Like really bad. I know Kaguya has some giant legend behind her and everything, but it's just terribly communicated with the player and in general she isn't appealing to me at all. Fanon doesn't help. Mokou is just boring, sorry. Only good line was the jelly donut thing.
The music felt like ZUN had to one-up all his previous tracks. He failed. It all has that ZUN-esque feel to it, but aside from a few good tracks they just tried too hard. Ridiculously extravagant solos and long strings of 16th notes, overuse of ZUNpets (and stupidly high pitches), and usually a failure to set the game's mood.
Same with the danmaku, it felt like ZUN had totally lost inspiration for most of the game, came up with random shit that he though might look pretty and just went "oh ok this is good enough next spell".
Deathbombing, shit. I would rather use my one bomb on deathbomb than have some powerful one that uses two bombs, hindering me severely.
I also never liked the human-youkai familiar nonsense either, but whatever.

Shot types are good, though.

I agree with that anon on the deathbomb thing. The music is not bad, although one often rates Touhou music through comparison with previous games... and we all know PCB has the best soundtrack of the whole series, hence why IN's music might look shitty.

Oh, and I really liked the fact that you can play a lot more of characters than in the other Touhou shmups.

Honestly, I do not notice any kind of a significant gameplay difference between any of the touhou games. They all have their little gimmicks and their pretty patterns. They're 99% the same game, gameplay-wise.

Where they really differ is storylines, characters, music and extra options, and that's where IN delivers.

Nope, IN and MoF or UFO or even EoSD play quite differently. They are similar yes, but there are appreciable gameplay differences everywhere. You have to actually play them to notice this though.

People who think Touhou games have any kind of significant gameplay differences (disclaimer: Shoot the Bullet, IAMP/SWR and Phantasmagoria games are different from the main series) are like people who think the powers in fourth edition D&D are different from each other. They're exaggerating almost completely meaningless differences, probably because their experience horizon is too narrow.

I get the idea that the sort of person who complains about IN's gameplay is the sort of person who only plays shmups and no other genre, ever. That sort of person's opinion on anything is worthless. To have a meaningful input on a discussion, you need to play all game genres regularly (or at least most of them).

Too lazy to skim through the whole thread so I might echo someone's opinions, but I like IN. Maybe because it was the third Touhou game I played (since MoF hadn't come out yet). Music is always subjective, but there were many good songs in it, in particular: Voyage (1969 and 1970), Cinderella Cage, Plain Asia, History of the Moon, Lunatic Princess, and Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke.

Frankly, I like the interplay of the Master-Slave and Human-Phantom system. I find it far more interesting than EoSD (nothing), MoF (faith system, essentially nothing), SA (graze whore or bust), and even PCB (cherry borders are cool, but it takes a while to build up the next one). Keep in mind that I'm not a lunatic mode player who aims for high scores, which is probably why I appreciate IN despite the fact that it's "too easy" (the major complaint good players seem to have against it).

I'll admit that deathbombs suck, no two ways around that.

IN has great music, several really classic songs. I like the "plot", and the way that you fight a different boss depending on who your character is in stage 4. The time system was sort of unique and gave an added layer of challenge to it for a little more replay value. It was a major boon to the yuri doujin sect, which I'm thankful for, but I'm sure that makes some people upset.
Yes, it's easy. But they shouldn't all be as hard as SA. People have to start somewhere, we all started somewhere. The best mechanics are SA and PCB in my opinion, but overall I think IN is a great game. I like all the Touhou games honestly.

The only thing I don't like about the music is those high trumpets. They hurt even worse than PCB's seven layered synth train to deaftown

I like it for its stat-tracking and practice mode for each spell. If other Touhou games had this...

The deathbomb system while really forgiving for new players develops some really bad habits for the other games. Easy and smooth for casualfriends.
I do think IN is a weird series for me because the music in the first half is actually better than the second half (Voyage tracks are very refreshing, though).
Imperishable Night without a doubt has the best intro track.

Of course, SA music overall superior (I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU STAGE 3, FUCK YOU)

Gameplay-wise with the difficulty aside, I feel had a great thing going with the character teams and diversity for TH8 and I'd like to see them do it again in upcoming shmups without the dumbed down deathbomb system and easy stages. SA sort of had the character shot types.. too bad you never actually saw that character on screen and most of the shot types were just fucking stupid.

I liked MoF mostly because of the massive difficulty spike at the last boss. It's a dramatic shift that makes me feel like I'm really fighting a god, because I've been sleepwalking through the rest of the game instead of being all warmed up and ready for it.

Imperishable Night was my first, so I have to give it some preference. I love the scoring system (time points, master/slave, human/youkai, final spellcards), bullet patterns, and shot types. Not all the music is great, but there are some excellent tracks here. I could care less about the story, I don't play with english text, but with the exception of Keine I like pretty much every character in this game. Spell Card Practice mode and all the unlockables rounds it off as a full package that's a bit meatier than most of the other games.

Death Bombing is stupid, but if it really bothers you so much just learn to bomb correctly.
