The story was finished and they couldn't keep it running by starting up yet another plot because it would eat up plots future anime projects would be able to take, and they weren't allowed to make up random new girls to be new protagonists either because then the music side of the IP has to cast new voice actors and write songs for them.

The next arc would have been building faster than light spaceships or wormholes to create an intergalactic society, and they're not gonna do that in a low budget gacha game, it would alos require new assets out the ass.

I'm of the general opinion that "too late" is a silly concept for mobage.
You may not be able to get all the stuff or compete with the top players, but you probably weren't doing that anyway unless you're a huge whale.
It's an ongoing service, you get on the ride and off the ride when you feel like it.
