The fact that she severs fairies' connection to nature and turns them into spirits is honestly pretty grim, since it means they can't ever revive or reincarnate again. Even ZUN says it's a pretty sad fate for them. It makes her seem kind of evil since she's basically the only character to really affect other girls in a permanent manner.

Her ability is definitely pushing some existential/body horror buttons, in a bad way.
I wish I knew more about the real Zanmu. He supposedly had some controversial views on Buddhism (although he was a Buddhist monk), and I'd like to know if this might be related to 2hu Zanmu turning fairies into pure spirits.
In a way, they are being forced to reach nirvana, so Zanmu might think of it as doing them a favor. Same way she made Hisami's desire drive go 'poof' in the above comic.

It's really pretty depressing when you think about it; fairies are arguably the happiest, fun-loving species in the series and zanmu basically irreversibly turns them into characterless, formless spirit blobs if she beats them. I guess it's a good thing she didn't come across the fairies of light or cirno.
It's interesting in that most incidents have been pretty self-contained across the series and don't really have any personal impact on the characters themselves, but zanmu was basically going around committing essentially permanent fairy murder converting them into spirits over the course of 19.

"本朝神仙記伝" Has some stuff about Zanmu in it, and I think it may have been how ZUN learned about him. Another book, "本朝神社考" seems to imply that Zanmu was just another alias for Hitachibō Kaison. Most information about him is pretty sparse but this page has a bit on him:
