In standard English it's pronounced just like "der". Many older spellings commonly used "dre" instead of "der". Like when using the French spelling for "cidre" instead of "cider" etc...

The main reason is probably because we've limited "dre" to situations where the e is pronounced (such as in "drench"), so whenever someone who hasn't had much experience with non-Webster (i.e. non-"simplified") english or with foreign languages sees it, they automatically pronounce the e.

In French it'd be 'flawn-druh' like Flandres (the s is silent), the region known as 'Flanders' to everyone else.
