I've always advocated for full word mining decks over Core decks or isolated kanji memorization.
Naturally learning the meaning and readings of kanji through how they're actually used allows you to achieve both learning kanji and learning words.
Mining decks also improve your connection to the words you learn, helping you acquire them faster by putting them to use. When you mine from a manga you're reading, you'll likely be seeing those words again as they can be related to the setting or story, bonus points if it's a slice of life or simple setting manga (this is why Yotsuba is recommended for a first time.)
