they're saying emphasizing their inability to do something despite it not being a big deal

it's just kind of a weird to me because i encountered it in a situation where she was kidnapped and said "とてもじゃないけど眠れない", in which being unable to sleep seems like a normal reaction, but it's probably a popular phrase where the actual meaning gets lost

>Because of the wide geographical spread of the Japanese archipelago from north to south, characterized by high mountain ranges, deep valleys, and wide rivers as well as numerous islands, Japanese has developed a multitude of dialects, many of which differ from each other in a way more or less like current descendants of the Romance language family... Besides the physical setting fostering geographic variations, Japanese society has experienced several types of social structure over the years, starting from the time of the nobility and court life of the Old and Early Middle Japanese periods, through the caste structure of the feudalistic Late Middle and Early Modern Japanese periods, to the modern democratic society in the Modern and Present-day Japanese periods. These different social structures spawned a variety of social dialects including power- and gender-based varieties of Japanese.

Depth perception is the ability to perceive the world in three dimensions and to judge the distance of objects from oneself and from each other. It is not necessary to have depth perception to learn kanji and read Japanese, as these are two-dimensional skills that rely on visual recognition of shapes, patterns, and symbols. However, depth perception may help with some aspects of kanji learning, such as:

>Perspective: The property of parallel lines converging in the distance, at infinity, allows us to reconstruct the relative distance of two parts of an object, or of landscape features. Some kanji characters are composed of smaller elements that are arranged in a perspective-like manner, such as 道 (road), 遠 (far), and 門 (gate). Having depth perception may help to perceive the relative position and size of these elements and to memorize them more easily.

>Stroke order: The order and direction of writing the strokes that make up a kanji character are important for learning and writing kanji correctly. Some strokes are written from top to bottom, left to right, or diagonally, and some strokes cross over or under other strokes. Having depth perception may help to follow the stroke order and direction more accurately and to distinguish between similar-looking strokes, such as 一 (one) and 丨 (vertical line).

>Radical recognition: Radicals are the basic components of kanji characters that often indicate their meaning or pronunciation. Some radicals are derived from pictographs that represent objects or concepts in a simplified or stylized way, such as 日 (sun), 月 (moon), and 山 (mountain). Having depth perception may help to recognize the shape and orientation of these radicals and to associate them with their original images.

However, depth perception is not essential for kanji learning and reading, as there are other strategies and methods that can help learners to acquire these skills, such as:

>Mnemonic devices: Mnemonic devices are techniques that help to improve memory and recall by using associations, imagery, stories, or acronyms. For example, one can use a mnemonic device to remember that the kanji for “tree” is 木 by imagining that it looks like a tree with a trunk and two branches. Mnemonic devices can also help to remember the meaning and pronunciation of kanji characters by linking them to their radicals or to other kanji characters that share the same sound or meaning.

>Repetition and practice: Repetition and practice are essential for kanji learning and reading, as they help to reinforce the visual recognition and recall of kanji characters and their components. Repetition and practice can be done by writing kanji characters by hand, reading texts that contain kanji characters, using flashcards or apps that test kanji knowledge, or engaging in activities that involve kanji, such as crossword puzzles, word games, or quizzes.

>Exposure and context: Exposure and context are important for kanji learning and reading, as they help to familiarize learners with the appearance and usage of kanji characters in different situations and environments. Exposure and context can be achieved by reading authentic materials that contain kanji, such as books, magazines, newspapers, websites, signs, menus, or labels, or by watching or listening to media that use kanji, such as movies, TV shows, podcasts, or songs. Exposure and context can also help to infer the meaning and pronunciation of unknown kanji characters by using clues from the surrounding text or images.

Therefore, depth perception is not a requirement for kanji learning and reading, but rather a possible advantage that may facilitate some aspects of these skills. However, learners who have limited depth perception can still learn and read kanji effectively by using other strategies and methods that suit their needs and preferences. Welcome to Japanese :) perfectly normal. Whatever the exact way, yes the general answer is: a ton of practice.

And basically, to really remember a kanji, you have to handwrite it countless times. Countless.

Fill up pages with each kanji, while also being focused in your mind on its meaning and a couple of pronunciations. Most of the ones I really remember are those ones (or those read many many times).

It does make a huge difference.

For instance handwriting 勉強 had given me a really hard time lol, and I've struggled with it so much that now I swear I will never forget this guy.

If you're not particularly following a JLPT cursus, I find the Kodansha Kanji Learning's Course very well done. To know why just read its descriptive on Amazon or whatever.

At the end of the book you master the 2000 kanji you need as with JLPT N1, Japanese government official program for Japanese people you know, plus a few more, it just doesn't follow exactly the same path to get there as the N5-4-3-2.

For pedagogical reasons, one of them precisely being to help you differentiate lookalikes. Learning them together, and indicating you their differences, or referring to them, like "don't confuse with 384". You can take your own notes too on the book, it helps.

And of course mnemonic tips to remember every kanji, as in most methods now.

For each kanji it also gives you several words to learn that include the main pronunciations. According to the author learning literally all of the pronunciations brutally is too hard and not necessary, as you'll meet them along the way.

Finally, the words you learn for one kanji are made only with kanji you previously already learned, which is a unique feature as far as I know, and extremely helpful imo.

I think it also has its own Anki deck if you look for it.

Some say it becomes confusing past the 500 first kanji or so, so, just so you know.

There are a lot of posts on this sub about best ways to learn kanjis, you'll find some about Kodansha and others, but whatever you choose, hand write each one dozens and dozens of times. (It does take time, but not as much as you could fear.) And rewrite them the next day without looking. Once you're good learn new ones. And write all the ones of your past five or seven days every day before new ones. Etc.

頑張って :)

i recently purchased genki 1 text book to self study. i thought chapters 1 and 2 were very helpful, but now getting to chapter 3 i’m lost. it took away romaji, which i know you don’t want to rely on but i’m really just trying to be conversational. i can read hiragana and katakana but not knowing mostly any words i feel like you just flip back to the vocabulary sheet a million times. i’ve heard genki is more for a “class” atmosphere since a instructor would help to follow along with. i’ve been using duolingo on the side and feel like i get more out of that. should i just keep powering through or can you recommend additional things i can do that would benefit me more by wanting to learn to speak it mostly? thank you!

You shouldn't learn to write kanji as a beginner and will only get frustrated.

Although not necessary to do whatsoever, many people are still interested in learning to write kanji to the level of a native speaker or higher. This has potential to come in useful if you are ever going to live in Japan. However even if you are only interested in reading Japanese, you will likely see yourself improve after learning to write, benefitting from a higher awareness of kanji.

By doing a core deck, consuming Japanese content, doing look-ups and mining, you will learn to read Japanese. However, many people find it difficult to learn Japanese words with kanji right away. Isolated kanji study refers to associating kanji with English meanings through mnemonics. By doing this you can make it easier to remember the meaning of Japanese words, as you will have a grasp of the semantic hint of the kanji right away. However, you are investing many hours into memorizing information that is essentially not relevant to knowing Japanese in any capacity. Whether this is worth the time investment is something everyone has to decide for themselves.

the 2 main methods of grammar acquisition i've tried
-1. study from books
>pros: well organized, easy to navigate
>cons: can't retain shit, shit goes in one ear and out the other. also usage examples often fail to properly explain the rationale behind the use of expressions and structures. lastly, it pisses me off that they often fail to offer correct alternatives when listing examples of misuse
-2. learn naturally from seeing shit in use
>はずかしい呪いにかかって 何も 話せなくなってしまった! (The influence of a spell of embarrassment preempts you from talking)
>恥ずかしさのあまり 話しかけられない! . (You feel so embarrassed you're unable to speak)

i should probably clarify that 日本語文型辞典 from くろしお出版 also starts at an intermediate level. at least that used to be the case for the last ~20 years? that's how old it is. but as i said, it recently got revised and they included i think close to 200 lower level expression as well. this new version hasn't been translated and i personally haven't seen it yet. just so you're not disappointed. if you're going for jlpt it would probably be best to stick to jlpt specific material for now until your more like n2 in grammar terms.

>shit man, it didn't involve nearly as much guesswork when i picked up italian, THOUGH.
English is way closer to italian than english to japanese, there's no comparisson to be made and culture similarities matter as well
>i'm 100% sure something similar can be achieved to bridge the gaps between both languages (e.g. 'miss' and all its potential translations), but that'd require the help of someone (actually) billingual
Learning grammar can help learn new concepts but it cannot give you the ability to properly recognize and use anything you've learned, that has to be done separately.
You don't get the chance to think about your grammar when you're outputting something on english, nor do you carefully deconstruct every sentence so that you can address the given meaning, you just know. Same goes for any other language. It'd be very jarring to do any of those two, in the way grammar does it, because everyone has a feel for what's good grammar and not, we can definitely go back and examine a sentence but it's not natural to think about it in the way grammar it's taught, even if we can still think about it in those terms if we so wished to.

that's beside the point, which is the fact that if you try to look up all the ways to say miss (外れる, 見逃す, ~遅れる (e.g. 乗り遅れる), Xが落ちている(be missing), etc.) you won't find a neatly organized listing, repository, or compilation.
same deal with stuff like counterfactual conditionals (e.g. もし彼が出るって知ってたら見ただろうに if I had known he'd make an appearance I'd have gone watch him)
>You don't get the chance to think about your grammar when you're outputting something on english
no, but I can think of expressions in terms of stuff like "put your faith in SOMEONE," "commend SOMEONE for SOMETHING." (or failing that, use terms like noun-phrase)
japanese grammar explanations always use shit like 「副詞/な形容詞+に/い形容詞(ク形)」 which ends up making it look like there are like 3 branches when it's just indicating an adverbial clause.

no it's not. just think of Xは in terms of "as for X," "if we're talking about X," etc. and for the uses, divide it into cases
>1. introducing something new vs something new about something already known
昔、姫があった。姫はきれいだった
there once was _a_ princess. _the_ princess was beautiful
>2. contrastive は
このレストランは肉がおいしい the meat at this place is tasty
このれうトランは肉はおいしい(が、魚はまずい) the meat at this place is tasty (but, say, the fish tastes terrible)
see pic related for another example with more variables to mess around with
>3. が marking surprise
あっ! 容疑者が逃げようとしている! (ah! the suspect is trying to get away!)
容疑者は逃げようとしている (the suspect is trying to flee (btw, what about you, guys?))
>4. が when you're trying to say "it's YOU/HE/SHE/etc. who..."
私が払います (I am the one who's going to pay, i.e. i'm the one paying)
>5. が usually for relative clauses

that's not all but it's a start. are you sure it's difficult and not just you relying on poor quality material?

translations and phrasing are a separate matter. it's not about what you'd write when translating to your language, it's about deciphering what it says, and the "as for X" thing often helps to put things into perspective. take the the following overused joke learners are often teased with:
>2 people sitting at a table at a restaurant. when asked what they'll have for dinner, one of them says
>私はウナギです
if you go by conventions, you'll get "I'm an eel."
if you think of it prefacing it with "as for me", you get "as for me, [is/are] eel" i.e. "as for me, my order is eel" after filling in the blank.

the current core deck has words I encounter with a different context when reading and that's dumb imo because me and other begs can't acquire that.
for example I know yahari from my 500 hours of eng sub anime but acquiring that from anki is retarded. there are other words I don't know in that deck that can't be acquired but I'm still repping.

okay and? anki or not, you're often not going to learn all meanings of a word all at once, so you'll keep encountering words you recognize used in ways you didn't know. this isn't specific to anki but to learning a language in general.
also it has nothing to do with acquiring using just anki, because nobody has every advocated for only using anki and never immersing.

at first glance "djtguide" sounds neutral and together with the neocities part it probably lulls people into a sense of familiarity by reminding people of itazura but the .moe guide has always loudly associated itself with discord. its not hard to see why someone who never clicks the links would just put the djtguide thinking the other one is a shill

Ideally whoever runs djtguide should just put moe in the anon curated guides as well, not that shill kun would be happy with that

tatsumoto is just a spamming parasite, everything good on his site is stolen from other sites like learnjapanese.moe, and the guide he wrote offers an extremely high amount of bad advice due to its creator (tatsumoto) not knowing japanese at all.

he created the back-up site in bad faith to trick people into visiting his main site. shouldn't that be enough to make you distrust him, even without all the stealing and ban evading?

>> No.45243374

miniyoga doesnt even spam here anymore

His site is alright for a gnutard like me, none of the other sites are even come close to the autism displayed on there.
Pretty sure the only reason people dislike it is because of the retard spamming it months ago, kinda like you're doing now
