To be fair, the only competition they really have are Takano+Tomitake and Shion+Satoshi in the OG. And neither of those got as much time as Keiichi and Mion, even if they were crucial for the characters involved. We spent, as far as I can remember, more time with Shion's paranoia and anger over Satoshi's disappearance than with the two of them together and Takano was just - at least at first - using Tomitake.
And all SotsuGou added to the "canon" relationships was Satoko's pure possessiveness, abusiveness and obsession over Rika.
In terms of decently romantic relationships, Keiichi and Mion only really have Satoshi and Shion for competition.

I wanna talk about Meakashi and why it's my favorite chapter in Higurashi. Shion's journey really moved me when I first read it and Meakashi is such a cruel story about all the terrible things you can go through during childhood and that our loved ones may not always love us in the way that we want them to. When Shion first escapes St. Lucia and escapes with Kasai, she acts all happy go lucky and unconcerned but later it becomes so clear that that was all just her way of coping with her intense loneliness she's felt all her life. She realizes her situation refuses to take it seriously, thinking in the end love will win and that her mom or Mion will stand up for her and things like this make the nail scene hit so hard for me, Shion is a very believable and tragic character in Meakashi to me even though she seems almost comically evil at times. It's like Onikakushi Keiichi but rooted in much more realism imo.

Her love with Satoshi is so tragic to me as well because she does all these things for Satoshi but he probably never even realized she exists. When she reveals herself to him, he's high on L5 and probably won't remember her when he wakes up or never even comprehended her existance at all (There's also a short story in an extra manga where he wakes up and mistakes Shion for Mion, although it's not canon). Shion latches onto Satoshi like her life depends on it because she's never really been treated by a stranger the way he does, even though he thinks he's talking to Mion.

I'm sure most people here are already aware of her character as she's been talked about many times before, much like the rest of WTC, and the "Without love it cannot be seen" origins in Meakashi and Watanagashi but I just love her so much and I could talk about her everyday without it getting tiring. Seeing her go from what she was into what she eventually became moved me when I first read Higu, with how she learned to live with the ache that Satoshi might never wake up and uses it for positive growth. Shion's story is all about forgiveness and love, the former being something I place a lot of importance on in life. I hate DEEN for making her be remembered by secondary weebs as some crazy yandere because she's so much more than that.

While I don't relate to Shion much on a personal level, her story really resonated with me more than anyone else in Higu, Mion is the only other character that I really love as well. I believe Mion js R07' subtlest Triumph. I love the Sonozaki twins so much, I hope you love them too!!

For higurashi, it was the finale of Minagoroshi. The peak of higurashi, the true ending. Takano coldly executing everyone might as well be one of the most impactful moments in VN history.
I remember cracking up now and then during episodes 5 and 6 of Umineko when Jessica was on-screen, as I began to realize that none of them would return alive, and what Ange experienced in 1998 was most likely the cold, harsh truth. Oh, and of course the Halloween party, finale and ??? tea party of Twilight.

Didn't cry at it per se but nothing I've ever read in my life hit me harder than the tip indirectly suggesting satoko's getting raped in tatarigoroshi, something about the way they revealed that was bone chilling. The scene in matsuri when takano's grandpa gets btfo and gives up his research. I don't know how much it counts but the end of miotsukushi (the matsuri one, kizuna is gay) got me more than anything else because it was the last arc I read out of all of them, also because I'm a shionfag and it gave her a better ending imo. Gets me on every reread too. Also most of the shit from the other replies.

I can't call it "bad writing" because the characters themselves were flawed, nothing got magically fixed. A bit of a downer ending because the country still got blown the fuck up in the end, but at least it shows the power of friendship & love can't overcome everything (as Eren rightly believed, but he chose to trust an uncertain future and left the diplomatic mission to his friends).


I'd prefer a happy ending, but at least the cold unforgiving logic was there. No magic. I can understand Eren breaking down under the weight of his action, wanting to be stopped, and just reminiscing about the things of life he didn't get to have.

I think things getting all goofy and crazy near the end with all the club members makes sense though, from a thematic perslective at least. The entire vn it's been the club trying to enjoy their times together with sillyness and games but horrifying reality would always set in and tear everything apart. But now that everyone has a deeper understanding of one another and have vowed to trust and confide in each other while owning up to their own sins, they turn the tables and manage to bring their sillyness and games, their happiness pretty much, into the harsh reality that has fucked them over for so long. Even in the end, Takano's shot at Hanyuu misses because in this fragment, Takano must atone for her sins, just like everyone else.
