I'm not sure how to feel on Miburo's three another story what-if sub-routes. On the one hand, they're better than nothing, but on the other hand they feel like they're mostly there out of obligation because if the girl didn't get SOMETHING people would riot, so they're usually quite short and a lot of them consists of MC sitting in rooms being told about cool things happening elsewhere.
Also one of them has a huge retcon that I don't think is supposed to be canon and really undermines a small arc in the main story.

I can understand why some people would hate his visual novels, bit I think that Shiniyuku is bit different from his usual works. Chracters suffer a lot, but not all the time? There are plenty of heartwarming moments as well. This novel is like horror movie in a sense that you get to know the characters and learn more about them. Once you become attached to them, they start to suffer. And all of the torture scenes are taken seriously in the game, rather than just being a torture porn.It feels as if they are written not to humiliate the heroines, but rather to make people feel sorry for them.
I also like how in this game Banya uses torture scenes to show the characters personalities and their relationships with each other. For instance, the main villains are supernatural beings that don't feel pain, so they're really curious about people's weak bodies. The vast majority of the magic in the game is used as a backdrop for tragic scenarios and the fun moments are few and far between. I think it's worse than the original Chusingura, but I'm mixed on whether it's better or worse than BnK, it's one of the things I wanted a moment to let percolate. I think Miburo has some fucking stellar moments and fights and a massive cast of characters almost all of which are winners I absolutely love, but romance-wise it's way weaker than BnK, but that's also because 90% of the romance was in the first game and BnK is basically just an epilogue. To be clear, the girls in Miburo are great, but the romance with everyone except for Hijikata, Saito, and Heisuke is kinda weak. Miburo also has some pretty major plot problems, some of which are writing issues and some are just that's really what happened in real life so they're kinda stuck by trying to be accurate. Sometimes real life has gigantic plot arcs end in disappointing climaxes or major characters just walk out of the story to do their own thing, never to be seen again.
It's not terrible, it's great, it's way better than Gikei (now that I've read all of Inre's history games Gikei's the clear loser), but it's great with caveats and problems and it's riddled with issues up and down. I'd recommend reading all of Inre's historyge because there really is nothing else like them so if that's something that appeals to you this is all you're gonna get.
