As you can see in the picture, I haven't touched anki for more than a year and as expected, I have a lot of reps accumulated that I didn't do in the course of all these months. Those decks contain vocabulary and I had over 1.2k mature cards when I left (a couple hundreds of these cards still aren't overdue even after all this time). The thing is I'd like to get back to learning Japanese but I don't really know if I should clear my pending reps and continue from there knowing that anki's spaced-repetition system is probably all fucked up in those decks or just start from scratch again even though I still remember how to read several hundreds of words and it would be a waste of time to be "re-learning" them (and I don't really like the idea of "removing" from the deck the words that I remember either)

Do you think there is a way for me to not start from 0 again? It would suck to do all that shit again just to re-calibrate anki's SRS.

Alternatively, you can just delete everything and start your mining deck, but either way, N5/N4 dialogue is all very common and you'll see it endlessly in the media you consume.

I'd say learning formal grammar isn't truly required, what you need is to understand how the language works, which is grammar but not necessarily in a formal approach (i. e. learning how ideas are expressed in Japanese and not how words are classified and all that stuff linguists jerk off to)

Pretty much the same for me but with English. I'm aware that my English isn't "native level" but I'm sure it's quite good considering that I've never done anything to actually learn the language besides translating video games using only an English/Spanish dictionary and consuming a fuck ton of English media over the years.

Now, if you ask me about english grammar, I have no fucking idea of why the sentences I say/write/read are composed the way they are but I still can easily communicate with English speaking people and read engineering textbooks.

Your English seems good as fuck but knowing how words are classified and shit does make it easier since you can learn rules for conjugation and shit instead of just feeling it out, it helps you bridge some gaps and be able to compose/understand stuff through brute force before it becomes second nature
