KOC scores.

kageyama 93
nippon no shacho 97
yadan 90
kaerutei 89
zigzagziggy 86
zenmonkey 91
rinjin 92
firethunder 91
sarugorilla 94
loveletters 91

nippon no shacho 92
kageyama 93
sarugorilla 94

I wish Nippon no shacho had a better second skit. Probably wouldn't have mattered anyway, Saru needed to completely fall flat in the final to lose with that score difference.

Miike looks like one of the cast lol. The film had its world premiere 2 weeks ago in Spain. I don't think it's gonna be a "back to form" in terms of Miike madness, and it's obviously couldn't thanks to the very mainstream cast, but I'm still looking forward to it. I hope the lead being a Janiizu doesn't affect the box office turnover negatively (Probably wouldn't because they're still popular despite everything happened)

The problem is the geinins themselves. This is supposed to be Lincoln's successor but it's impossible to have a successor to a show that had Downtown as the main MCs and Amaegari and Summers as the regulars with Kamaitachi, Mitorizu and New York who are criminally overrated. They're not main cast level. Of course modern regulations play a part in making variety shows boring, but the talents themselves are very average. If they were serious about having a Lincoln successor, they should have hired Bananaman, Chidori, Audry and Sandwichman. The whole show felt like amateurs trying way too hard and failing miserably.

Not really, it's a lighthearted slice of life about a woman who gets inspired to do her best in her job and personal life by replaying Pokémon Red. With that being said, a Pokémon fan will enjoy it more. There are references and puns that only Pokémon fans can understand and appreciate (webm related). Even the Pokémon BGM played every scene enhance the enjoyment.

Sono at his most soulful. There's something mysteriously special about indie Sono, working with a lower budget and with a mostly unknown actors. You can feel the same thing watching Bicycle Sighs, BAD FILM and Suicide Club. Red Post itself is a great experience. It wasn't a simple film, it felt like a manifesto, like a love letter to cinema and art or something, as the theme is about filmmaking. It had some callbacks to his earlier works, especially from BAD FILM.

SABU is one of my favorite filmmakers. His works are always odd, powerful and emotionally disturbing, especially the early ones starring Tsutsumi Shinichi and Taguchi Tomotorow. They are genius works in an incredible dramedy with monumental absurd situations. This guy has one of the most unique and diverse filmographies. Definitely one of the most underappreciated directors in cinema. I wish you started with his first film 'Dangan Runner' and moved up by release order.

That's exactly what I'll do. Some time ago, my acquaintance recommended to check out his early movies when I asked him for something similar to Kenji Uchida's movies. And judging by Postman Blues, I think that I'm going to like SABU. Postman Blues also made me think of another director that I really like, Yoshihiro Nakamura.

While I didn't like Dangan Runner as much as Postman Blues, it was still a pretty cool movie. Especially liked the 3rd act and the MC's speech about running and life. Some of the scenes even reminded me of Miike in some ways. It was also interesting to see how some elements from this movie were later improved upon in Postman. Some consider Dangan Runner the weakest among SABU's Tsutsumi pentalogy, but for his first filmmaking effort, it was phenomenal compared to many other great filmmakers. The main concept of the film is very infectious and absorbing. I've re-watched it many times now but it's always as fun as the first time. You can sense his boldness and confidence in his distinct style in his debut work, and as you've already noticed from watching Postman Blues, he'll develop this style as he creates more works.
> Some of the scenes even reminded me of Miike in some ways.
It shouldn't be a surprise if he was inspired by the likes of Miike Takashi and Kurosawa Kiyoshi, he started as an actor in their v-cinema works before he started his filmmaking career.
>After the movie, I wanted to go outside and run a few circles

Since Dangan Runner, I've watched Monday and Unlucky Monkey. I was not expecting to enjoy his movies so much. You never know where SABU will take you. Every movie is like a road with many twists and turns. I'm also enjoying how he constantly shifts genres, and all these tonal changes are sometimes so fucking crazy. I really wasn't expecting Monday and Unlucky Monkey to go in such directions. Especially with Monkey, I didn't think it would be so dark compared to Postman, Dangan and Monday. They are also dark in some scenes and moments, in a way. But Monkey is in a completely different league, imo. Just started watching Drive and I am enjoying it as well. This bouzu character may end up being one of my favorite Terajima's roles.

This is the essence of his original style. The large scale intertwining narratives that only get larger in scope as the film goes on, only to very dramatically and suddenly take a magnifying glass to the intimate character moments when you least expect it. As for Unlucky Monkey, first you think it's dark, then funny, then suddenly it becomes a dead serious spiral into a pitch-black abyss of despair. Personally, I loved Monday more. Its comedic surrealism just gripped me hard when I wasn't expecting it. It’s filled with so much absurd deadpan humor that I found myself rewinding scenes either to pick up what I’d missed from laughing or just to relive the madness one more time.

Drive was fucking bonkers. From now on I'll be extra cautious when walking outside to avoid falling into some pit that leads to Hell, Naraka, or wherever. I also thought that this place and time of day might have something to do with 逢魔時. It was amazing. I would say that I liked Monday more than Monkey too. And overall, I think that Drive, Monday, and Postman are the best of these five movies.

Also finished watching Blessing Bell. Did SABU liked bouzu character played by Terajima in Drive so much that he decided to make a whole sort of spin-off movie about him? Now I understand what you meant when you said he was experimenting with different genres. While it bears some resemblance to this pentalogy, it feels very different from these movies. It was such a warm, comfy, and meditative movie that I really wasn't prepared for it. It's fantastic, but I think I'd enjoy it even more if I watched it with a different mindset, because movies like this are exactly my cup of tea. For some reason it also heavily reminded me of Kitano's Dolls.

Drive was like SABU trying to make a cocktail of every theme he presented in his previous works. Each sequence is like a short film by itself, and they all blended perfectly imho. What's special about Drive is how the energy of a scene is spread out across the runtime, making this two hour film feels like half hour.
>Also finished watching Blessing Bell.
This is SABU at his most subtle, but it doesn't lack the SABU style and themes of mixing black, absurd humor while also presenting moments of truth and depth between people sharing their lives for one brief moment. What I love about it is the visuals. I think it's SABU's most visually accomplished film. There are many occasions where the camera is positioned in such a way that it subtly enhances the humor or dramatic impact of a certain scene The camera work does loosen up a little near the end, mimicking the mental state of Terajima. It was so nice to see Terajima in a leading role after the countless supporting characters I’ve seen him play over the years, both in films and tv dramas (smiled so hard when he started chattering at the end). Also, that cameo by Suzuki Seijun was a killer.
You'll now be moving to SABU's works starring the Johnny's faggots. Hard Luck Hero and Hold Up Down are still fun thanks to SABU's trademark writing and directing style so I hope you find them entertaining despite their shitty """acting""". Oh, and by the way, do watch A1012K, it's a fun short film.

I think Kitano Takeshi's works are kinda similar to SABU's early works, namely the Artistic Suicide trilogy, Dolls, Kikujiro, Getting Any?, and A Scene at the Sea. Still, both of Kitano and SABU have their own distinctive styles, so it's nothing more than a feeling, but I still think you're gonna enjoy them if you enjoyed SABU's early works.
Another filmmaker I think you'll enjoy is Toyoda Toshiaki, specifically his early works before his drugs scandal. While they might lack the humorous nature of Kitano's and SABU's works, there's some similarities to them, either from the core story or the visuals.

>A Stranger of Mine, but I remember nothing about it. It was a movie night with my friends, and it's been 10 years or more since then.
I would recommend you watch his movies in order of release date. As with SABU, you can clearly see how he improves his style with every movie, but I think that in Uchida's case, it shows even better. Personally, for me, every his next movie was better than the previous. I especially liked Key of Life, it's fantastic, and for me, it's as good as Drive, Monday and Postman Blues. There's even a Conan anime movie that came out in 2014 for Conan's anniversary. And it serves as a sort of crossover-sequel/epilogue to Key of Life. Uchida was a scenario writer for it. I would recommend you watch it after Key of Life.
>I'm curious to see how similar he is to SABU, and if his works hit better with me than SABU's. Seems like he hasn't made anything new since 2012, wonder what happened.
I think he got married around that time? And stopped making movies. But sometime earlier in this year or previous, he got divorced, so hopefully he'll start to make movies again.

You're in for a wild ride with Key of Life. Teruyuki has one of his best roles in this movie imo. Also, that's actually how I first learned about Uchida and his movies. I was looking for some movies with good twists and discovered that he was actually sort of famous back then for having a lot of cool twists in his movies. Then I looked at his filmography, and it looked pretty interesting, so I decided to watch some of his movies. So glad I did it. I hope he'll get back to filmmaking one day. There's also a korean and chinese remake of Key of Life, never seen them though.
