Is Nukitashi really that difficult? I've heard that there are a lot of jokes and references that are difficult to understand as a beginner, but do I really need to understand these references to enjoy the overall story?

I tried reading some of the often-recommended "starter" VNs but none of them really held my interest and the VNs I'm most interested in are marked as "hard" which makes me afraid to try, Nukitashi is one of those.

I'm stuck in the dilemma of forcing myself to read easy but boring VNs or trying difficult VNs and not being able to understand, I don't know what I do...

If you have "hard" vns that you want to "properly" experience for your first time then hold off on those, but play the ones that you don't mind using as a training dummy. Personally my basis is finding content I've read long before in english, or something that I wouldn't have ever got to reading normally anyways for one reason or another. I would avoid reading anything that I believe could potentially mean a lot to me personally until I think I'm ready enough to tackle it capable of understanding most of it without needing to stop and look things up.
Other than that hard or easy doesn't matter, if it's unbelievably "hard" but still interests you it'd have 10x more value than anything "easy" even considering you spent the same amount of time in both. As you'll just be more attentive.
