The whole point of UBW isn't that Shirou will "do what he can" to untie people as a speeding train heads towards them, but rather that he has learned that behind his completely selfless desire to save people is at its core a selfish wish to be the only way he can -- making others happy. Shirou's arc is one of realizing he should pursue his dream not to atone for some imagined sin of his but rather because it makes his happy. Shirou's dream as such doesn't matter, because at the end of the day it's more about Shirou's learning to love himself and overcome his self-loathing. It's about Shirou's making the dream of his by redefining what it means to be a hero, just as Rin did being a magus. The central theme of the route being that one ought to follow a path in life that makes you happy; that is the message of the route when taking Rin and Shirou's arcs together.

On the other hand, HF is more about exploring Shirou's inhumanity and humanity and how they clash, in the sense that there is no reason why Shirou ought to abandon his ideal of saving people after temporarily straying from his path to favour Sakura over strangers. But the conundrum of HF is one particular to him, because Shirou is just that mentally ill that like a broken computer program, he ceases to properly function after deviating a single time from his assigned purpose. It is the route where Shirou is simultaneously the most and least human of all -- his bare humanity exposing his inhumanity. Furthermore, the point of its being impossible to save Sakura is to create a contrast between Rin and Shirou in terms of how they handle the situation; Rin expresses admiration for Shirou because unlike her who is insecure about herself and too rational to pursue an unattainable goal, Shirou is too stubborn to ever quit. Aside from continuing the contrast that was built in UBW between the two, its purpose is ultimately to show that despite his abadoning his ideal, Shirou *has* remained true to himself -- he has merely replaced one nigh-impossible goal (saving everyone in his sight) with another (saving Sakura).

I won't go too deeply into what the Fate route does for Shirou, but the point is that this retarded meme just reduces FSN's complex theming and characterization to but a silly ethical conundrum, which is horribly insulting to the brilliant storytelling. The reality is that almost all of the Shirous would if pressed hard sacrifice the few to save the many; Shirou is not as such opposed to killing his enemies, even if he prefers to avoid bloodshed. When Archer shittalks Shirou in UBW during the first confrontation with Caster, he specifically brings up saving Heracles as well because he's trying to point out to Shirou that he is absolutely not consistent at all in terms of how he applies his own purported ethical principles -- because Shirou is fully intellectually aware that in fact he can't save everyone. It's an issue of lack of self-worth, and his wanting to die saving others in order to give his life and his being saved by Kiritsugu meaning. Utilizing the trolley problem as a heuristic for understanding FSN just renders one incapable of actually engaging with the themes. I mean, the central moral dilemma in HF isn't whether to save Sakura at the expense of others, but that it is *impossible* to save her, and she's doomed to die; it's about whether or not Shirou will kill her sooner rather than later to reduce to kill count, as opposed to hope in vain that some solution to her situation will magically come about. Of course, Shirou does persevere, and the solution does come about... through some very strained plot contrivances. But whatever. You would never get that shit from just thinking FSN is about le solving le trolley problem lulz!!!

I mean, there really isn't as much to say; the core of the narrative is pivoted around the relationship between Shirou and Saber, and the way that the two act as a mirror to each other, confronting them with the toxicity of their behaviour and mindset in another person. Most of the characterization that Shirou receives that isn't handled more adeptly in UBW and HF is in the basement scene, where Shirou has to confront his past and is forced to declare that no matter how horrible it is, he would never take it back, because its horrors inadvertently helped facilitate the happy, fulfilling times he had with Kiritisugu and Taiga -- and though it is left unspoken, it very clearly includes Saber as well. In doing so, he acts as an example for Saber to not forsake her own past as well. It's a pretty decent introduction to the character overall, but once again the "Shirou behaves suicidally throughout the route" joke as in the meme above does a massive disservice to the characterization, but I felt not as much as it does to the other two routes. In Fate's case, it's still a caricature of Shirou, but in terms of visual or single sentence summations of his character, it can work, provided it is utilized as a contrast for the next two routes. The meme curiously enough doesn't even tackle the thematic throughline between UBW and HF, namely the humanity that is buried within Shirou that is paradoxically complementary to his inhumanity and in fact is the source of it: UBW presents us with the fact that Shirou cannot have fun because of his guilt over having lived when so many died, but having nonetheless maintained that desire for human joy, he developed his desire to help others as a way to feel happy while making them happy -- the only way he can have fun; the route has Rin as its heroine partially because she's someone with a fun personality that Shirou can relax around, accepting that he's happy for his own sake. HF then takes that and builds upon it, by showing how Sakura's coming around to his house helped him stay sane by satiating his desire for regular human happiness that he himself is unconscious of yet struggling to suppress. Sakura's presence helped him maintain the illusion that being completely selfless was truly fulfilling and satisfying for him, and that he wasn't simply deceiving himself. Overall, I think the issue with Fate is that it feels a bit too thematically impoverished, as so much of its themes of being proud of what you've done regardless of your failures if the path you walked is one of your own choosing and makes you happy are carried over into UBW, but are analyzed more thoroughly and properly therein; whereas with UBW and HF it feels like both routes contribute a relatively equal amount without either of them feeling incomplete on their own.

Not worth what it goes for here. I'd give it a 7/10. Not a lot to the game as far as extra content. Gameplay isn't terrible, it's viable but somewhat shallow and repetitive. It looks cool. Game forces you to play it twice at least. 4 endings. Ones mostly an early ending that's a joke. Two normal endings are pretty shallow and the third NG+ ending that relies on extra NG+ scenes is pretty good. Overall story is satisfactory with a lot of undercooked characters. The Root is the origin of reality or some shit. Magic comes from there, which is cool, but so does everything else. You probably shouldn't touch it, but people want to anyway. It's probably not an actual root or even a literal place, more of an abstract concept, but it's definitely real.
Mages try to reach the Root because it's powerful. A ton of magecraft and each magus family's magic is dedicated to the end goal of reaching the Root.
If you do reach the Root, you can take from it a True Magic. These are actual, real-deal magic spells, none of the magecraft half-measure stuff, they don't give a shit about the laws of reality and can just kinda do anything. True magic. I'm pretty sure they're even more magic-y than the old Age of Gods stuff, but I might be wrong about that.
Reaching the Root is impossible. Reality doesn't allow it. That means to reach the Root you need to do some seriously fucked up stuff and break everything. Furthermore, reality wants to keep it impossible, so whenever some does break things so hard that they reach the Root, reality fixes itself and that method will never work again. This means every attempt to reach the Root is a complete shot in the dark, and that it gets harder to do so every time someone does.There are 7? True Magics because that's how many times someone has reached it.
There's no consciousness or anything about the Root, there's no big tree guy or some shit that says you only get one True Magic each time, that's just how it works. If you think about it too hard you'll probably stop existing or something. Maybe it's all you have time for before the way closes? I dunno.
The Holy Grail War is actually just another scheme to reach the Root. The whole "win the war, get a wish" deal is bullshit. I don't know how many people know this beyond Zouken and the OG Einzbern lady.

Could be wrong here, but I think Mahoyo went into more detail. As time goes on, things that are impossible for humanity (or the planet) slowly dwindle, and eventually, only five paths were left. I don't think the way or the path to the root closes, ever, unless it becomes something that is achieveable through other means, and the reason they only get one magic is because the path they chose is related to that.
Kind of like, there's two types of magic, the ones "created to reach that place" and "created upon reaching that place", at the end, they can be connected over the fact that they surround reaching the root. So the "Magic" might be something that only happens once per path because it is the symbolization of that path to the root, in other words, you either figure out a way to create that path, or you reach the root and then become connected to that path, but either way, your Magic is just the realization of one of the Five impossible miracles... or something like that.
Anyway, the mats that went into more detail about Zelretch and how his magic worked (Sorry, but I can't remember for the life of me its name rn) had him saying that the reason that he never taught Rin magic was because there were no more open positions for magicians, take that as you will.

IIRC, in UBW Gil went into further detail about how each servant was meant to be an extra package of mana for the Holy Grail, at six it should have enough magical energy to brute force just about anything, and seven was the amount required to be able to pierce into the root. It's hard to cheat her power adjustements because Arc can raise her power in an arbitrary fashion and even use her backup strategically. During her fight with Ciel she believed Ciel had a trump card, so she adjusted her power to be above an imaginary trump card Ciel possibly had, but she had no proof she did.

Mahoyo was better, not just in terms of the story, but everything also looked better and the... what's the word? 'Framing' of the characters was way more innovative and refreshing. Nothing in Nu-Tsukihime reaches the level of Mahoyo having character sprites shown as reflections on the table surface, or the over-shoulder shots of Aoko or what have you. I can't honestly say that Tsukihime remake was outright butchered, and many things there were an improvement compared to the original, but some vital ones were lacking. Have we ever seen or heard of magic in alien species? Velber, ORT, V/V and the other TYPEs, all seem to demonstrate only tecnology, inherent skills of their species and Grain (a seemingly physical particle, ergo, dead space matter) manipulation.

Even if we consider that the pruning doesn't affect things outside the solar system (vague recolection about the explanation of QTLs and pruning mentioning the amount of data stored in the solar system), and that the universe continues the same, all the planets in the Solar Sytem, which we know have Gaia equivalents, are still being reset. Okay, so anon, this reminded me of something that could potentially help explain why Brunestudt has access to magic things and also "prove" that other planets can't just prune timelines as they wish.

So, quick RL history lesson: 4.5 billion years ago,there were two specific planets in the Solar Sistem, an early Earth and a mars-sized planet ocasionally refered to as Theia. Long story sort they colided into each other head-first, Earth absorbed majority of Theia, and the remains of the other planet eventually coalesced into the Moon.
This is the origin of our Moon, another planet that hit Earth and lost most of its form. Might I add, this is unique to our Moon, no other moons were formed from this method, and even Venus, which had similar collisions, failed to obtain one like this.

This would beg the question, if planets other than the Earth could prune timelines, why would they allow themselves to be destroyed in collisions with other planets, why would such a timeline not be prunned? Three theories immediately come to my mind:
1- Other planets can't prune timelines.
2- Because Theia was partially absorbed, it couldn't exclude the timeline, since that would intersect with Gaia's own pruning authority now that it had parts of it.
3- Theia didn't care about its almost complete destruction and accepted this end.
... I don't think I need to tell anyone this, but theory two isn't exactly convincing. Three, though, I don't know. I hardly understand how Gaia thinks most of the time, so other planets? Sheesh.

Anyway, bonus: in the artbook they released to commemorate the release of the Tsukihime anime, it was stated that Crimson Moon's country had lost everything, and he was looking for a replacement world. Yes, this was decades ago, so take the canonicity of this statement however you wish, and it is uncertain that Nasu even knew of this theory back when he wrote that, but "losing everything" could refer to how most of it got absorbed into the Earth and the Moon's surface became a land of death with no life.

This all goes back to:
The Earth has, theoretically, from a certain angle, the Moon in itself. It could be that the reason both those of the Earth and Crimson Moon have those magical abilities is because of that connection, because both have "something" that the Moon once had.

...Though, take all this with a grain of salt, this is the same mushroom that placed the atlas mountains in egypt and failed at basic maths at least once, and maybe twice, with Tsukihime, so he could perfectly well not even know about the origins of our moon.

We've seen the inner sea at least three different ways and Arc's specific area is entirely different from the rest. Tír na nÓg, the land of eternal youth is another description that gets the same "world of fairies... fairyland is this planets dream" description. The important point is they're all "inside the world", the inner sea, the land of fairies, which matches the old definition. It's dream/fantasy land. The castle is also explicitly her manifestation as its owner. I think CM just conceptualized "castle in the mountains" as part of it and so you get the TA version of fairy land in the inner sea. As for reaching certain area of it? Didn't heartless get lost in the land of fairies from the spiritual tomb? Roa and Zel got there too, And Shiki in the manga. In case you're saying the castle isn't in the reverse side we know she returns there and that the castle is evocative of the inner sea. It probably works like the spiritual tomb which doesn't have its coordinates recorded in the human texture so can wander since it isn't reliant on reality and so you can have parts of it simultaneously below the earth and above it and portals that connect.

Basically, the planet has different dreams. Beautiful and evil, and these influence a fairies disposition. So to me, it sounds like it all still fits.

So, Arcueid, Ciel, and Roa (all primary sources) all say at many points in the story that Roa's blood got sucked 800 years prior to the beginning of the story. But then, when we see Roa's memories, it's literally stated he was born in the late fifteenth century, and to corroborate that, when he talks to Narbarek about going to Millenium Castle he literally mentions the Gauss-Print, a fifteenth century invention. The fifteenth century happened 600 years, at most, from the beginning of the story.
Is the entirety of TYPE-Moon bad at math, or is this intentional (in other words, time travel and time dilation of extreme levels happen around millenium castle so that those 200 years came from somewhere)?

They had sex in the cottage at the Einzbern forest before that. Furthermore, “saving Saber’s heart” and having her open up to him are not the same thing. To save her heart in this scenario meant to convince her that the wish to obtain the grail to erase her existence as King was wrong, and in Fate route, Shirou and Saber had already fucked the whole two times by the time she accepted to let go of that wish. In fact, in the very scene she accepts this, and might I remind you, this is after they fucked twice, there’s a bad ending where, if there aren’t enough Saber points, she will kill Shirou reflexively the instant Kirei offers her the grail for it. She regrets it immediately after, but it happens nonetheless. Shirou and Saber fucking is completely independent of her heart being saved, or even her fully opening up.
