Ohhh, you're gonna love (or hate) Visitor Q. It's weirder and more insane than Gozu and Imprint, due to how realistic it is and its themes are compared to Gozu and Imprint with their fantastical elements. In my opinion, it's Miike's sickest work.

There's a reason why Sono gave it the title "BAD FILM", but it has its charms as a work by Sono in his second stage of his career (1990-1999) as a filmmaker. Definitely not for everyone, and for very good reasons, but some Sono fanatics would appreciate it. Personally, it's my favorite Sono work from that era, just pure and unfiltered Sono madness. It's actually a miracle it saw the light of day as it was left unfinished due to funding issues. It took him nearly 2 decades to go through over 150 hours worth of footage and re-edited them into this mad rampage of guerrilla filmmaking.

I highly recommend reading the original manga by the genius Furuya Minoru. Sono's adaptation is very different, which, as a fan of the original work and its creator, is something I appreciate a lot. Only a great auteur like Sono would make a masterpiece like Himizu a different experience that is as impactful as the original. It reaches the level of apocalyptic bleakness and puts you through an array of emotions you never expected to go through.

Fun fact, the title of the film is named after Kitano's father. The story was more grounded but not for lack of the good ol' Kitano themes. Apparently Kitano made Kikujiro because he was fed up of being pigeonholed as a violent filmmaker, so he transplanted his thug persona into a child's world and the result is one of his richest films. It's basically It‘s a reverse Kitano film, wherein he plays the emotional character for once.
>but I still consider early Kitano to be the greatest Japanese director
He's without a shadow of a doubt up there with such masterpieces like Sonatine, A Scene at the Sea, and Hanabi. Personally, Oshii Mamoru and Kitano Takeshi are the greatest to ever do it in Japan.

I'm half way. The documentary about pagodas is a bit boring because it's TV documentary after all. Follow the Light (Pic from before) was good enough. Itsuki Nagasawa is pretty. Avoid Bachiranun and A Girl in My Room. Hanagatami was truly a letdown.
