This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translations and MTL is highly recommended.

Depends, I switch between ~5 or 6 titles for lns, 2 vns and 3 jrpgs as of this month, sometimes it's more vns, more jrpg, and less of the others.
I don't feel like it's impacting my enjoyment at all, it depends what my mood is that day, tho it does take me longer to finish a title, since new volumes release quite fast for some of them.

Interesting. I believe you're the only one (besides the anon with his smut secondary pick) who said you split it up. The thought came up the other day as I was looking through my LN backlog and noting how many manga tabs I had open. Feels a bit intimidating, though I also have many LN stories I'd like to give a go. Yet, at the same time, as a slower reader, that's a potentially very long commitment for me. I feel the people who split it up as you do must have a fair amount of commitment to finishing it all, unless they just get bored with a work quickly. Just some thoughts.

LNs are already niche but eros are even more so, especially those officially published rather than being up on nocturne or yomu.
So finding pirated copies of anything eros is surprisingly difficult, and honestly if you aren't looking for anything specific you're better off diving around on nocturne's side of narou.

Not him, but both Z Lib and the DJT Guide site's 小説 section have an alright share of ero contents to dig through. Maybe Nyaa. DL-Zip is mostly going to give image dumps and epubs, so you'd need to convert/compile them, but that's an option. For convenience, Z-Lib can auto-convert stuff to PDFs if you select so in the dropdown upon downloading, and you can convert epubs/etc from DJTGuide using online converters if necessary.

Poorfag here, I buy LNs whenever I have the spare cash to do so. Its about all I buy that isn't a necessity, but even then I still only buy books a few times a year. If they aren't gonna gain a sale from me anyways, I'd rather pirate the book than not.

In my case, I have a few practical reasons outside of cost, but it comes down to mostly ignorance and selfishness on my part. I can freely admit that much.
>1. Ownership
I'd like to order physical volumes, but because it's much easier for me to read e-books (being able to quickly look up definitions and adjust text/fonts), I don't. That frustrates me.
>2. Ignorance and long-term value
Because I lack intimate awareness of the authors I like best (aside from an inkling or two), I don't know what is worth spending money on. I need a lot of time to read, so it's a long commitment, and if its contents aren't suitable for my tastes/needs, then it's wasted money on my part. For example, what if I buy something and it's 90% dull padding, or is unexpectedly NTR豚 shit? Then, it'd get too exhausting or abhorrent to read. As such, I acquire a wide variety of them illegitimately as a means of dipping my toes.

That said, I recognize that only ever pirating content is undesirable for the industry. I've been looking into stuff on Kakuyomu lately, and it's not so bad. I kind of like how many WNs have shorter chapters so I can comfortably pace myself. I'm giving this a try right now: https://kakuyomu.jp/works/16817330661730670311
NovelUpdates doesn't mark it as having any kind of romance or whatever, though I kind of hope the protagonist gets to flirt with and/or romance the gyarus a bit. Only on Ch 7 at the moment, but I like the premise, and I think I'll get a satisfying scene for the protag soon.

How do you based and redpilled industry supporters personally search for and decide on what to get? Do you completely finish most works you purchase, and do you still "indirectly collect" any LN goods? I wonder how much 'clean' people spend both locally and internationally. While I don't properly support the industry, my pirate's nest of LNs feels increasingly like a PC gamer's insurmountable Steam backlog. I guess I'm just a filthy degenerate 泥棒魔。
>>44861245
>avoid anything with less than 3 volumes and no joke you avoid 99% of the garbage
Is it because many authors want long serializations? I've found a lot of the stuff with synopses I liked were listed as 1 or 2 LN releases amidst ongoing writing (often with a vast WN written already). So, I don't know what to make of it. It's a bit concerning that it's difficult for me to assess if a work has been or will be axed. I feel like I'd have to snoop around each author's social media just to find out. Had to do that earlier today for a manga I was reading, and sure enough, it faded into obscurity in favor of a new book.

All said, considering I enjoyed a single-volume LN as my first, I'm not sure if I agree fully with this. Though, I'm sure you have more experience under your belt to speak about it with greater authority.

>> No.44861369

most creators get into animation or manga or vidya or something relatively straightforward to tell shorter but self contained stories
for someone to get into LNs as an author they are either a bandwagoner that will fail before volume 3 or they are an autistic lunatic with a long ass story to tell, no real in between, this is why a LN either lasts 1-2 vols, or lasts for 20+, with some reaching 50 while still having stuff to explore
>All said, considering I enjoyed a single-volume LN as my first, I'm not sure if I agree fully with this.
short ones that actually do finish under 3 volumes or are just a trilogy obviously don't have the rule apply to them
they are, and i say this in the most smug shit way i can, the exception that confirms the rule

So the massive volume ones aren't so often just padded the fuck out? That's usually the impression I get (without reading them), especially with typical isekai/fantasy or school-themed works. I feel like if I had to read a slew of chapters of inane, totally autistic meta shit instead of actual character development all the time, I'd lose my shit. I think I just need to read stuff I have on hand so I can develop a better taste for things. It'd be nice to support the creators properly and enjoy more recent releases when I'm not feeling so skittish about potentially burning a bunch of money because the content ends up being a chore to go through, or 180s into trash out of nowhere. In any case, thanks for your input.

1. For a lot of stuff, I already know I like it because I'm migrating from the WN
2. I don't mind wasting $6~ a couple times a month
3. I'm easy to please
If I feel really iffy about a book I'm not against pirating it first before buying but I like to think I'm pretty good at judging whether something's for me just based on the description/tags/cover.
Piracy has kinda made people forget that media purchases are just naturally a gamble; I don't get pressed about wasting a few dollars on something that turns out bad.

>> No.44861752

>>44861329
>How do you based and redpilled industry supporters personally search for and decide on what to get?
As I can only buy LNs a few times a year, I usually only buy volumes I've already read pirated, ones which I already know that I like and wish to support. However, if I had the money to spend on as many LNs as I read, I'd probably just buy anything and everything that I'd consider reading without caring as much about whether or not I'll actually continue to read them.

The only stuff that can really afford to be meandering and have constant filler is mainstream bestselling stuff, and even then it's not really always the case, probably less than half of them do it.
Stuff like Overlord, Meikyuu, Slime, to an extent MT and Honzuki later on, and Konosuba can be extremely meandering.
Meanwhile Re:zero, Tate, COTE, Arifureta, Kagejitsu, Danmachi, Hell Mode, and so on don't really do, the argument could be made they have filler arcs, as well as the occasional "My editor is on my ass about needing to sell something ASAP because I'm taking too long" volume, but as a whole the pacing is fast and even what can be considered filler arcs still serve for character development.
Smaller stuff (so pretty much 90% of the industry) can't afford to be meandering, exactly because monetarily speaking they need to build up and keep a fanbase, and more objectively speaking, an author that starts meandering with extreme amounts of filler before volume 3 is not going to have much creative juices left in the tank to go any further than that.

>> No.44861828

>>44861465
I think you bring up some points of note. I'd imagine a slew of these authors move from WN releases to LNs anyway, so it probably is in fact a good way to learn about them and how they write so I know what to support. I hear みょん subverts expectations a lot with his titles/plots, so I've been interested in reading his stuff too, and thankfully, he has plenty of WN stuff uploaded. I guess I need to be more comfortable with stuff underdelivering until I find my place.

I suppose this "I want physical copies but read epubs more comfortably" autism is silly, too. I play PC games and use FLACs/etc, after all. Though, when it comes to books and special game/music content, the idea of owning the physical media, especially if exclusive, feels somewhat nice.
>I'm pretty good at judging whether something's for me just based on the description/tags/cover.
I have wavering confidence in that. I wonder what sites end up having the best sales and non-リア充 stuff. Bookmeter probably has more results than a site like Novelupdates, but I like the tag system there.

This is something annoying I noticed with some online storefronts. An anon recommended Honto JP to me, and while there were/are some neat freebies that seemed cool, a bunch require you to use the app, and the (laggy) browser-capable ones don't seem to enable mouse hover-over, so I can't use Yomichan to check definitions. It seems like a lot of the sites work this way, whether for novels or manga, and I consider that a service failure. I think Bookwalker is similar, but not sure if they offer DLs or not.

It's effectively book streaming when they're not typically large files at all. Forced online, restricted usage, poor performance, so on, yet it's accepted somehow? Relevant:

I tend to buy stuff that I can't find for free online off the amazon jp kindle store, importing stuff from japan is ridiculously expensive so unfortunately I don't feel comfortable about ordering physical LNs as sad as it is. LNs on a volume by volume basis are actually pretty cheap thankfully but it'll cost a lot more if you want to get into a long running series like toaru but obviously you don't have to buy everything at once, just take your time as your reading it. The psyop to make people waste time with anki instead of actually learning japanese is far stronger outside of chan boards.
Thanks to the fact raw kanji grind can be so easily gamified to give the illusion of progress it ends up being extremely dangerous but also extremely useful for anyone sabotaging those trying to learn japanese.

What would you say is a good way to learn Japanese, if you don't mind me asking.

>> No.44900224

>>44900184
Just do the usual.
>Learn kana, don't even worry about nailing it to perfection, just "good enough", this takes 1-2 days.
>Skim a grammar guide like sakubi, and only the basics, you will use it as a textbook for years: https://sakubi.neocities.org/
>Learn the first 2 grades of joyo kanji, again only to "good enough", takes 3-4 days.
>Get started on reading, go back to grammar guides or a dictionary whenever needed, which will be often.
>Repeat for like 2-5 years until N1.
Just remember to avoid hover dictionaries and j*sho because the databases are compromised, just JP > JP dictionaries instead, MTL if you have to.

>> No.44900238

>>44900184
>>44900224
Why would you try to be good enough with individual kanji?
Just get some basic vocab and then dive in.
And N1 is a meme term and anyone can pass that test easily without necessarily being good at the language for a lot of things.
>avoid hover dictionaries
Hover dictionaries can have JP-JP.
>MTL
dont do this lol

>> No.44900253

>>44900238
I'm simplifying it far too much obviously, but the general stuff still applies.
Yes it's better to learn kanji as words rather than in isolation, that much is obvious, hence reading and only looking up definitions as you come across them is far more effective.
Yes, N1 is largely a meme, but it's still an useful shorthand for "knows japanese to a decent level", which anyone can reach by simply using the language often enough.
Yes, hover dictionaries can have JP>JP, but they are also a crutch to avoid recognizing kanji yourself, and given the first database got compromised you're better off not taking your chances.
Yes, MTL bad, but it's still better than a compromised database or the average JP > EN translation, which is so bad that trying to learn by translating something and comparing it to the official translation is actively harmful.

>> No.44900288

i had a pretty good translation session with chatgpt once but it required me to routinely correct it on context and then have it try again, sometimes i just had to totally overwrite sentences. so i feel like you need to be beyond beginner level to use it well. at that point you're probably better served doing jp-jp dictionary lookups anyway.

what's so compromised about the jp-en dictionaries? i know sometimes they fail to contain a word or phrase.

>> No.44900291

>>44900253
>crutch to avoid recognizing
Yeah that's true, but as long as he can control himself to only turn it on after first mentally trying to identify it, it's still useful. JP->JP dictionary files for them come from actual JP dictionaries and aren't some sort of mixed JP and eng published dictionary, so shouldn't have problems there.
>comparing to translation
Better to not compare to any English at all imo. Using context and sentences you do understand to better understand sentences you're confused on works well.

>> No.44900314

>>44900291
>Yeah that's true, but as long as he can control himself to only turn it on after first mentally trying to identify it, it's still useful.
Self control is a resource, no point in mindlessly wasting it, the easier it is to smooth out the pains of the process, the better.
And learning radicals like kana to quickly look up kanji is far easier than guessing with OCR.
>Better to not compare to any English at all imo. Using context and sentences you do understand to better understand sentences you're confused on works well.
I'm not disagreeing with that either, but that's somewhat advanced tactics not anyone can do easily.
Though it's an inevitable necessity these days with how awful EN translations have become.

>> No.44900324

>>44900288
>what's so compromised about the jp-en dictionaries? i know sometimes they fail to contain a word or phrase.
Attempts at sabotaging anyone learning Japanese have reached to the point of sabotaging JP > EN databases used by both j*sho and hover dictionaries, these days you will get definitions that are either comically dry or outright wrong, exactly to push the "Japanese is too dry/robotic" meme.
For example look up 岩石 and 岩根 if you don’t believe me, pro tip: they aren’t synonyms.
You think it’s a freaky exception? It’s not, look up 降雪 and 天華, or 強風 and 一陣.
Again, they aren’t synonymous, or they are in the same sense “trees” and “delightful grove” are technically synonyms, in fact the rocks example isn’t even a synonym, not even close.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg by the way, look up 前, 先, 嘗て or 往 if you want to see how fucked up things have been for a while now.
Do yourself a favor and throw your EN > JP dictionary bookmarks in the trash where they belong, and bookmark kotobank,jp or any other JP > JP dictionary.

I mean jp-en dictionaries are shit but that isn't because it's run by (((saboteurs))) it's because pretty much any language to EN dictionary is about at that level, it's not aimed at that level of learning but at a very basic learner, as only such basic learners will need the EN definitions to begin with. The part says that there's no name above it, so it can't be a monster/UBM. I'm pretty sure a golem that's operating completely independently would also count as a monster, so I assume it's a piece of equipment that's carrying out someone's(the smith's?) directive. Like Acra-Vasta, I guess.

Anyone have recs for WNs/LNs with themes of the protagonist starting as a piece of shit (or bad guy otherwise) and redeeming his chatacter? To clarify, I don't mean just being a mob. I mean like being an evil or otherwise very ill-reputed person who, upon some happenstance (like reincarnation or an accident), works against his character flaws and negative reputation to bring about a positive result. I don't mean just being mean or cold, nor just "mob to god" type of thing, but "that guy is a villainous, atrocity-committing scumbag...to positive entity" sort of story. Think tyrannical fatass princes, brutal fuckboy bullies, etc. I know みょん has some works like that, and I have a few in my reading list for after I finish catching up on a WN I'm reading now, but I'm curious about what of note others have read or heard of.

The 3 volume filter exists for a reason, the vast majority of LNs get "axed" in the sense the author runs out of ideas and stops writing.
Yes, it counts as a hiatus, but when it's basically guaranteed they will never continue, it's fair to call it an axe.

NGNL really is the kind of thing where reading it in japanese is basically required and the only way to experience it.
Mostly because LN fan TLs are largely dead and >shitpress.

no need to feel scared over it, trust me, they will know regardless
you need pretty much years of immersion to really catch up on small casual keigo details, without that pretty much everyone will realize you're a gaijin
not like it matters these days, as long as you aren't being rude they don't really care

has anyone found any b/w leaks for youjitsu year 2 vol 10 yet?

>> No.45009950

My book's coming along, lads.
It's about a Gaijin in Japan teaching English when one of his students, (unbeknownst to him) an Idol girl, wants more personal private lessons to iron out her English pronunciation for her songs.
She starts crushing on him but he learns who she is and freaks out since not only is a student crushing on him he's heard horror stories of idol girl culture and he thinks both he and she would get it several times worse since he's not even asian and tries to distance himself from her (in vain).

jokes aside whipping out kana and the basics of grammar using shit like the sakubi guide shouldn't take you longer than 2 hours, upon which you can start reading by MTLing kanji definitions off kotobank or something
the hardest part of japanese is just switching your brain to not-english mode, once you start learning without translating them to english first it's an extremely smooth process
