is it worth sacrifcing the understanding of a first time experience of a game or show for language gains?
i've just been sticking to things i've already experienced before out of fear of ruining that first time

I've been talked into adjusting Anki's Starting Ease and Interval Modifier as shown, as apparently it avoids "ease hell" and gives better control over difficulty based on retention, but could someone explain to retarded me how exactly this will affect card intervals in practice? I've been using these settings for about 3 days (after resetting the ease on all cards to 131%) and so far intervals for young cards just seem to be increasing more slowly in general, but will they increase more quickly later on?

Also, I've seen a lot of people put learning steps of 1 or multiple days for new cards, could someone explain how this is any different to just having the card graduate to a 1 or 2 day interval?

mine has been like this for a year, i don't know what any of it means and just don't touch it

if you wanna avoid ease hell then just get the straight rewards plugin and then you can set those number to whatever values you prefer

i dont do this but heres a rough explanation
ease is a multiplier on how long the interval until you see the card again will increase when you hit good (easy and hard use it plus an additional multiplier also listed there)
every button but good modifies the ease of the card affecting future intervals so that if you fail a card a lot anki reduces the aggressiveness that it increases the interval at
because its designed for people to aggressively use the easy button but using easy/hard is stupid and most people dont do that your card ease can only go down and you eventually get piled up cards with the minimum 130% ease that you see way too often even when you stop failing them
you cant disable this but what you can do is just make all of your cards have about 130% ease from the start and add a global interval multiplier to cancel it out (1.31 * 1.92 ~= 2.5, 250% is default starting ease) and then never hit good like normal
if you do this you would still need to drop all your existing cards down to 130% ease though or their intervals now be double

cards failed on learning steps dont increase the leech counter which is another good idea with an implementation most people hate and adding learning steps helps make it less shit

another common hack is a plugin that makes good actually increase ease sometimes (straight rewards)

anki is getting a new scheduling algorithm in the next major release that i think doesnt have ease hell anyway which is probably a better idea than any hack
it doesnt support multi-day learning steps though and maybe it has new problems to be discovered

I'm a bit confused about the 一口かじるなり part.
From jisho, I'm guessing 一口 means mouthful, かじる probably means bite, and なり is probably the noun version of なる.
So I'm guessing this means something along the lines of ''shirayuki, who became in a state of biting a mouthful of the cursed apple", but I'm not sure if this is the right mindset.
