>>44823858So I was thinking about the rating phenomenon where 7 is average... something like:Bad 1-6, average 7, good 8, great 9, perfect 10.I think it's human nature. We have more distinction to make about things we will consume than things we won't.Like try rating the following food: a pile of vomit, horse turds, chicken Alfredo with so much salt you'll gag.The rating is this: I won't eat any of this. Once it's in the "bad" zone it doesn't matter what number it gets is.there is some nuance among things you will consume. But only enough to fill like the top few slots of x/10.But autism demands 10 because numerology. And then from there people think 5 should be average because it's in the middle. When an honest review should never rate anything 10 because that means perfect which is impossible. So that leaves just 4 valid slots.Ebert and Siskel did something like this, 1 negative possibility (thumbs down) and 2 positive possibilities (1 thumb or 2 thumbs up)They also did "See It/Skip It/Rent It" which is basically the same thing but kinda goes more towards answering the question the "on the fence" consumer wants answered.Personally I like the binary rating scale the best, like steam. "Would you recommend this? Yes/no". There are nuances that aren't captured with that, but also I don't think those nuances are captured well by a 1-10 scale either.Thinking about it more.... Maybe reviewers that use the x out of 10 system actually aren't targeting the audience of people that are on the fence.I think rotten tomatoes attempts to translate x/10 reviews to bad, good, and "certified fresh" but I'm not sure how accurate the conversion is.I think it's kinda true that reviews themselves are a form of media for people to consume and how that influences people isn't always straightforward as "bad means don't buy it".
>>44823875jordan peterson said there is no correlation between virtue and iq
virtuous people are low iq because they get taken advantage of by people like peterson
a 10 is a sign of respect for the greatest works of the medium. a piece of art so mind bendingly good that you become obsessed and it warps your personality.

my rating system is1/10 = bad2/10 = average3/10 to 10/10 = various levels of goodlogically, if something is bad, it just isn't worth wasting half your numbers on it.if a website offers a 0/10 then obviously i use that for "bad" instead and 1/10 becomes my "average" rating.
I turned off new anki cards for 4 months and just kept doing my review cards so that during my trip to japan I wouldn't have to do hours of cards there or have ~15 hours of catchup waiting for me after coming home... probably a bad longterm decision but at least most of my cards are mature now

1. A few guiding bits of food for thought a. My 4 key bits of advice: Zipf's Law, The 50% Rule, How to Learn, Music School b. Language isn’t math: You don’t magically become fluent after memorizing enough words or grammar points. Real content isn’t a sterile vacuum like a flashcard; you’ll encounter sentences you don’t understand despite knowing every word. c. If consistency isn’t your strong point, learn about habit triggers and build a trigger-action plan to ensure you work time for Japanese into your daily life. d. If you’ve already got a routine but want to optimize it, see the appendix on learning
>>44826099Very well-put except I go by 1-5. 10 is too much precision for rating stuff. Also I use another metric: replays. If I consume the same media multiple times, that's usually an indicator of high quality.

guys. is learning a language an example of declarative knowledge or imperative knowledge?
I deleted my deck
>>44828261n7
>>44828465im leaning toward declarative, ex. you dont really know why different sounds mean different things, theyre just made that way, for the most part you probably wont be able to find that out. for most languages, im pretty sure the written langauge doesnt have solid reasons for being the way that they are and it would probably be hard to find out. many language rules are just "that's just the way it is" and they change randomly over time without any concrete reason other than peoples whims and laziness

>>44829069>>44829124you should be reading and watching more japanese content instead of playing memory games
>>44829124sounds like recognition. yeah isolating certain kanji can help with that. you can try learning common words with the same readings as the ones you are having trouble with. you can try one of the many mnemonic systems to help you remember as well. im guessing youre using a core deck?
some actual autist here once mentioned something about how the techniques for learning music are outdated and that there are better ones, basically the equivalent of immersion learning in terms of efficacy. if you're still here, what are those techniques, i think you mentioned a book at some point too

I can't take them seriously, even as a child I always thought they were embarrassing and stupid, and I can't really get over that hangup. For me it's going to be hoping something clicks or being forced into isolated study, which is misery.
>>44829192>then I read a chapter of Yotsubato a daywhy are you only reading one chapter lolthe bulk of your gains will come from reading and watching things and figuring out what's going on, not from ankiyou're literally spending the majority of your time on what is supposed to be a supplement you're supposed to use a couple minutes a day
