What's the best way to practice Touhou?

Like... Should I just keep doing story mode over and over or should I complete it once and just do Stage Practice?

Why don't you go talk to your family or jog or something? Practicing touhou for hours seems like a huge waste of time.

this - you need to spend days at it

You can spend hours without overdoing anything. There are many aspects of danmaku that can be practiced. But trying an extra stage 100 times in a row is perhaps as effective as doing it twice a day for a week.

You need to practice touhou a lot but keep in mind the frustration point that exists with all games. Remember those times you were repeatedly attempting something in a game and you seemed to be getting worse at each attempt? That's the point you should stop for the day. There's a few thoughts in general that can help you though if you understand them. Don't move wildly, move with purpose. Don't dodge bullets, go through gaps. And memorize stuff.

>> No.4481580

For the record, I've had Touhou games for years, but I've only been playing seriously playing them (particularly PCB) about an hour every day for the past 3 weeks, and I am definitely getting better at the game. I've managed to get up to Stage 6 without continuing, and it's only a matter of time for the 1CC.

So OP, take it easy seems right.

>> No.4481600

>>4481580

I don't want it to be years before I get better at this game.

>> No.4481602

Also, play more danmaku in general. You'll get better eventually. For a beginner, something like Eirin's last word is next to impossible. But for someone who has learned to look at the screen in different ways, it becomes fairly easy.

>> No.4481624

>>4481602
OP here.

I've tried this. Not really a fan of a lot of the other danmaku games. I prefer Touhou slow bullets and nice patterns as opposed to games like Mushihime-sama.

>> No.4481627

>>4481600

Getting better doesn't happen at once. How quickly you improve depends on you. 1cc'ing hard mode in under 6 months from now is entirely possible.

Make sure you're in good shape when you play.

>> No.4481628

>>4481600

I've had them for years. Back then, I only played them off and on and had no intention of being good at them.

I've only *seriously* started playing them for the past 3 weeks . and I've gotten considerably better with every passing day. There was a point in PCB where Alice was a wall, then the Prismrivers, and then Youmu, and now none of them are. The only thing that stands in my way is Yuyuko.

You get better every time you play, I think.Consider the fact that out of those 21 days there were many I didn't play the game at all.

I 1cc EoSD, PCB, IN and MoF but I still have some problems resolving bullet patterns.

A few questions:

I have just started playing Hisoutensoku. How do I unlock more characters? I currently only have Sanae, Cirno and Meiling. I figure I don't get any more because I cannot beat that goddamn Bass Boss last spellcard. What am I missing here?

In Cirno's route, is the Alice's Goliat Doll spellcard a survival card? Becase nothing I do seems to harm it or her.

Casual player here. My only 1cc achievement is Sakuya A PCB with bomb hax.
The rest of the touhou? I can get to stage with fulllife usually but lvl4boss or lvl5boss always get me stumped.
So I after seeing this thread I decided to try reimu B eosd, I usually use reimu A so it was kinda hard when I met Patchouli spell cards. It is totally different from reimu A and I proceed to get owned and lost a few lifes.
Reimu B bomb being shit didn't help either. Any tips on beating Patchy spell cards on Reimu B?

The bomb itself is weaker, but you make up for it with your own shot during the invincibility time.

Have you tried Marisa's shottypes in EoSD? MarisaA has the best damage in the game at the cost of no spread and MarisaB has a mediocre shot but has the most powerful bomb in the game.

Yeah. They can take out like one spellcard apiece, those Master Sparks. No dodging required!

I do full story playthrough mostly. Usually around 5th / 6th level is when I start to get hung up, so I'll practice the 3rd/4th stages until I can do them flawlessly, get to the 5th/6th stages, bombspam through them so I can unlock for practice mode, then practice those until I can 1CC.

Also be sure to try all the characters and different control setups if you're really having trouble. You have to find what works best for you.

Just tried it.
Died at Sakuya.
I am not too sure if the faster speed is a good thing. It seems like it is harder to graze small hole compare to Reimu. Overall he boss fight is easier but the normal stage especially stage4 seems much harder compare to Reimu.

It's a Touhou spinoff game starring Flandre with that duck thing from Moetan as a "coach". A bunch of challenges are provided, and there are two ways to beat each: killing all the enemies, and timing out the challenge.

Beat everything by killing the enemies, then beat everything by timing out. You will be refunded (with prepaid S+H) if your skills are less than acceptable once you have completely beaten Moedan.

Alternatively, play Shoot the Bullet.

No items
No bombing
Bosses Only

Seriously, it teaches you to:
- Stop hugging the bottom of the screen
- Position yourself, instead of letting bullets push you around
- Dodge at very high speeds (faster than Marisa), normal speed, and extremely slow speed
- "Solving" tricky patterns (Patchouli)
- Not having to "waste time" playing through a whole game to get to the one card you need to practice
