No, this isn't a kitsune thing at all. It's particular to Ran. She's scarily intelligent. The Sanzu river calculations she made and that she scanned all of the netherworld, which is infinite in scope is pretty insane. Although to be fair she got Chen to help her with the latter. Normal foxes in the mythology are just much higher in intelligence than humans. If I'm not mistaken their intelligence increases alongside the number of tails they acquire.

I'm pretty sure that her intelligence is because she is a nine tailed kitsune, though not definitively seeing as there are no other nine tailed kitsune to compare to, or any kitsune greater than one tail. Being a Shikigami might help, but it's not the sole reason. For example Chen is not very bright despite being a Shikigami. As far as intelligence goes Ran isn't anywhere near the top. There isn't anything Ran can do that Yukari can't except be in places separate from her master and get things done when she's sleeping, which is why Ran is her primary Shikigami and acts as proxy. part of it is Yukari trying to make herself sound smarter, but it's actually far simpler than you'd think. All you need to do is recompile the spirit-servant source code to the root of your machine. You can find it on ZUN's github, from there there's an FAQ if you don't understand anything of what I just said. There's even a powershell script if you're a windows tourist. There are some templates you can choose from after you've figured it out - Ran's in the Kitsune subset, for instance.

Your comment about kitsune got me thinking since i placed so much stock on the shikigami thing. Nine tailed foxes, according to different sources i looked at, are omniscient or at least can see and hear anything happening anywhere in the world. Now i could not find a single story validating this. Ran doesnt look to be either of these things but it does point toward her and foxes having gigantic brains. Although i still think her becoming a shikigami took her to the next level.

You get people like that because some sources contradict each other and nobody is satisfied with "well it's a retcon from ZUN" as a reason. It could be as simple as people not liking the changes, so they tune out the things they don't like and still feel fine about it since what they liked is/was canon. Granted some anons here are retarded and only accept their own viewpoint and reject all others, but they want to make sure you also have their viewpoint. This is where we get the "Grim" vs "Cute" sokyofags. Someone has to be wrong, but the one that is lies is conveniently the one you sourced. I understand their viewpoint because I was a 40kfag once upon a time and the unreliable narrator trope was overused to the nth degree, far more than ZUN's used it. That being said, there's a grain of truth in everything, but where do you go when there's a dozen different depictions of the same character or event? Case in point Reimu who is often used as evidence towards ZUN using the trope because her character is all over the place. Arguments about Ran in particular are the most interesting because most of the evidence used is from canon, and both interpretations obviously contradict. Whether that's because of retcon, the unreliable narrator, ZUN gives too much artistic liberties to the mangaka, or that ZUN simply can't write well enough to resolve the disparity between show vs tell? It could be all of them.

God is omnipotent and cannot be foisted off his heavenly throne, but Man is temporal and subject to the perversions of the world physically. God gives Man the right to do as he wishes to the world via having created Man in his image, and so it is up to Man to uphold God's law (The ten commandments), and enforce it upon the world. By this logic, Man is something special, and more than just an animal that can talk and do stuff, and a Youkai is a direct perversion of the natural order, especially someone like Nazrin and other beast youkai who aspire to be like or greater than Man.

I know it's a bit of a blogpost, but the logic I have in my head as to how this would all work is hard to explain and I don't think I can explain it well in words. My point is that it's POSSIBLE, but too many people either don't care or have vested interests that don't involve exploring the logic of such a situation. Mostly Papists and grimniggers, but that's really a given. I also don't see someone remaining catholic through all of this, but then again I don't see how anyone in this day and age is a catholic in ways other than cultural so that's probably just my own biases acting up.

You could simply accept that there are powerful beings who feed off worship, but deny them being gods because, for instance, your theology is quite clear that God does not require worship to exist, and anything that does is clearly lesser than an actual god even if it does claim divinity. There's only one thing in Gensokyo that's actually completely incompatible with Catholic doctrine and that's the afterlife. Catholics don't deny the existence of pagan gods, only their divinity. Which seems like a semantic argument but isn't.

Catholicism is much less inflexible than you think. Most Catholic missionaries back in the old days would basically syncretise as much as they could without compromising the basics of the faith. Oh, well if that's the context then I'd have to point out that whatever makes a story "interesting" has some subjectivity to it. I definitely think you could make an interesting story with that sort of writing prompt, given the vast history and many stories of catholic martyrdom in pagan countries (including Japan) that wouldn't be out of place in an environment like Gensokyo. Take the North American Martyrs for example; you had catholic priests having their fingernails ripped out, fingers eaten, boiling water poured over their heads in a mockery of baptism, eyes gouged out and then hot coals placed in their eye sockets...its not hard to imagine youkai doing things like that to Catholics in Gensokyo. Then you could write in how the Catholic Church then canonized new saints and dubbing them "Martyrs of Gensokyo". I think that makes for a pretty interesting story, regardless of whether you're sympathetic to Catholicism or not
