About five years ago I was making(imagining) my first touhou fanfic while playing Dark Souls 2. The days in the Mansão do Demônio Escarlate blur rather easily, especially when your entire job is to stare at the Lago Enevoado. But that doesn't mean they are boring days, quite the opposite. Every single one starts with a cup of recently grounded strong café fresco and, if I'm feeling like it, maybe a slice of cake or a pão de sal com ovo. Many would say it's not enough sustenance for a woman like me, but the way the criada prepares them would change their minds like the flow of the seasons. Following the nice breakfast with some warm up capoeira, just to keep the blood flowing, and a quick walk through the gardens, and I can say for certain when I stand by the gate of the proud casarão, "I'll do my work with a smile."

Particularly when my mind wanders to the people of the mansão I'm sworn to protect.

My patroa Remilia, always so taciturn and with a knack for the dramatic, rarely shows by the gates, so I don't get much interaction with her in the present days. It used to be different in times past, when we journeyed side by side through the lands, just two cangaceiras and a little blonde baby; irmãzinha Flan is quite the opposite: first is that she's not my real sister, she just likes to say it when we are alone. It's adorable and hits the right spot in my heart, that maiden spot longing for a small thing to nurse and care just like I used to with her when she was tiny like a doll. She's not the most stable person, no one in her situation would be, but she tries very hard, and baby steps mean the world for some people.

Doutora Patchouli Conhecimento, the shut in and our resident 'know-it-all'. Her personality is like her librarium, dusty and with a scent that's best described as 'ancient'. Like with Remi, we barely have any contact, but I like to think that our sparse interactions are enough to maintain a certain degree of friendship. Koakuma, the súcubo, is the opposite: she often visits and is friendly like the sunshine, and although keeping my ki tense is a must with her around -- you never know when a hot cup of chimarrão will come flying towards you --, she always manages to put a smile on my face with her gossips and near-infinite well of conversation.

There are the fairies, too. I love them, despite all their shortcomings, which there are many, and challenged nature. Their only saving grace is that they are too adorable for their own sake... and, sure, when they put their minds to it, they DO things...

... but putting a fairy's mind on something is a challenge on its own. 150 of them? Deus me livre!

Ah, the criada chefe; Sakuya Izayoi. Her name is like Sichuan and crisp scallion simmering on a pan with a lot of garlic, onion, and pepper. Pungent and entrancing, never releasing when it gets hold of you. Like the many times her blessed name downs in my mind, I reach for the thing by my side, sometimes my only companion for the entire day of guard, an old artifact that has seen many, many things in its life: the ruas of Brazil yelling against tyrants, the vielas and winding pathways of Argentina, the death mist of Colombia, Uruguay picking up its pieces, Paraguay celebrating, all that in just one side of the sea and within the last century, what to say about the other where I am right now, on this weird land of Gensokyo, even more to the east from my homeland?

Anyway, with the old héngdi in my hands, I moist my lips, thinking of pinkish ones I hope one day will be mine, and play a silly little lullaby that goes by the name of: 'Minha Sakuya Izayoi'.

It's a music of forbidden love. Of two co-workers, of two women, of a human and a youkai. Love not meant to be, but that exists and saddens me to no end to deny it.

The sun listens, the wind listens, maybe a curious fairy or two listen as well, but as the music reaches its final note, it is just me. Loneliness reflects silver hair and blue eyes, a long dress and a bow neatly dressed on the head, like a proper crown, a clock of prata hanging always in arm's reach and many more hidden peixeiras than the eyes met.

I wonder if she'll ever hold me dear like she holds the concept of elegance and perfection.

I lower the héngdi and although my heart yearns for pale arms, I know trying to reach out for illusions is not a very bright idea. Oh, well. Just another day as the gate guard: watching the hours pass by, shushing anyone curious enough to get too close to the mansão, and longing for love that will never be, the days blurring all the same.

I could taste a sort of magic in the air.

Glittering eyes of red flared and stared at me, dense and slit, eyes of death. My own eyes rapidly adjusted to the lack of light and shaped tattered clothes that, if not frayed, would belong on the court of a king of crimson. Folded cartilage on the girl's back gave me the last needed clue: a pure-blooded vampire.

In moments like these humans would certainly panic or maybe rage and kill, following their simple natures; maybe that's what happened to the pint-sized vampire, just tall enough to steal something from the dinner table before supper is ready: Alone with a crying baby, clothes dirty and worn, nightshade hair disheveled, ki weak; there leaves no much interpretation.

Was it inquisidores? Cruzados? A pack of vampire hunters?

I try a step forward, and she clutches the baby as if her life depended on it and displays her fangs; like a wild animal. A tiny and battered one. I raise my hands and slowly pull off my hood, revealing a curtain of red and smile motherly like those in the memories in the back of my mind. The girl doesn't move, just reinforces her position. The baby, blonde like the sun, cries even louder. A spell, it seems, makes it impossible for common people to hear it properly.

For how long is she maintaining the spell? Since she ran away from Greek Fire and silver spears? Even before that?

Calmly, I sit on the other side of the varanda, ten feet apart, back on a pillar, and stare at the two girls. The older sister tries nothing, staring back with pride despite her situation, and I can't hope to restrain a small laugh. She frowns, but her eyes soon harden when she spots me pulling something from beneath the cloak.

I wonder if she suspected a sword of prata, a cruz de Jesus, maybe even garlic? I raise a joyous eyebrow with the whiplash when she sees a héngdi old as the first oak tree ever planted.

Moistening my limps and not hindered by darkness, I play to my crowd of two -- a new record! Yes! --, this lullaby that goes by: 'Águas de Março'.

It's haphazardly put together, it makes no lyrical sense, it's a febre terçã, and is played with a smile and a light heart.

It's music that brings the end of the tiredness.

Eyes sore and mouth slightly agape, the older sister watches as the younger one's crying slowly ceases, substituted by sound sleep, scarlet eyes on me as the music goes on and on until its final note. As if relieved of an impossible burden, her face twists into easy relief, and invisible purple magic circles pop out before disintegrating. She seems to breathe for the first time ever.

"What's your name?" I ask. She stares, gasping for air.

"Remilia Escarlate, descendant of Vlad Tepes Dracul..." It appears she can't find strength for more. I look at the sleeping baby; Remilia understands the unspoken question. "This is Flandre, my little sister."

I smile and nod.

"I'm Hong Meiling. It's a pleasure to meet you, Remi and Flan."

Oh, that dream again. What is it called when a dream is made of memories? I dunno, dona Patchouli probably does; maybe I should ask her? Meh. Stretching with a smile similar to those in the memories of four, perhaps five centuries past, I take one glance at the position of the Sun to pinpoint time: midday, time for lunch -- the gesture was quite frankly not needed at all with the aromas of Sakuya's food saturating the air with warm colors and revitalization.

Smiling, I jump the fence inside, appreciating the ever-proud and imperial mansão, its gardens personally tended by me, architectonic philosophy on the outside like that of a pampered and crimson-bathed clay dollhouse, lacking in windows to fit the patroa's taste. It would suit nicely the green grass plains of the País Cafeeiro or the Hispanic Monarchy at the height of their golden age.

I walk through the arches on the side, a hundred and one species and colors of flowers framing the white wood, not even trying to hide my smile with the state of the backyard: the scarlet slabbed porch littered with fairies lying on the ground talking and smiling, resting. A mountain of dishes by the side pointing that they had just eaten.

Then, a blink. Each fairy now has a mini-pillow to aid their rest on the cold ground, a natural ward against this particularly warm day; the dishes were nowhere to be seen, probably done and stored; and, on my side and wiping her hands with technique -- because that's a thing --, stood the calm and collected Izayoi Sakuya.

"You are late," her voice a magnet, face neutral. "Sleeping on duty again, hm?"

"You know how it is: the world is a windmill, always grinding us up."

Within another blink, a steaming dish of baião de dois and salad; sirloin; steamed potatoes with a side of red beans was in my hands, my smile widening with the sheer aromatherapy. To think two thousand years ago emperors would dine on this and call it 'Celestial food'.

Sakuya, however, just stared at me, nodded with a slight smile, and I knew she'd blink out of existence the next moment, one hand reaching for her forearm. Her lazuli gaze took a confused note and went from my grasp to my eyes, and my smile grew.

"... Thanks for the food!"

"Meiling, it's my job." Ah, always so serious.

"And?" I laid back, releasing my grip on her pale beauty, watching the fairies resting for a moment; they're always so quick to nap... I'm proud. "You look very pretty today."

She blinked, perplexed, and held a bunch of each side of her long skirt and stood on her ankles, as if analyzing herself for any imperfection on the neatly weaved blue dress, its borders decorated with ruffles and açurenas vermelhas e azuis, the patroa's favorite flower. I watched the show with a big smile, back against one of the arches.

"I look no different from yesterday."

"... And?"

Sakuya sighed, taking on that criada pose she worked so much to make a natural state of being; "If only you could be this attentive in your guarding duties -- but, thanks, Meiling." Said placid like the complexion of a statue, one that belongs to a museum, yet a statue nevertheless.

I smile with my name leaving her lips, the intonation not as cold as the rest. No amount of composure born of elegance and perfection will hide the effects of a compliment from the natural ki. With intentions of keeping the pressure of my affection on her, I was about to say more, but one distant and simple ringing of a bell ended it all. The first ringing was barely halfway through and Sakuya was already gone, probably kneeling in front of Remilia and ready to die and kill in her name without a moment's hesitation.

I take a bite of my food, the glorious taste doing nothing to mitigate the bitter taste that took over my tongue. Such adoration with rewards like being thrown into a deadly reflection of this world, with her powers sealed, to strife on and on... Just the thought of having to fight a furious Reimu chills me. Jesus!

I love Remi, no doubt of it, but her thirst to swathe drawn-out boredom foils her better judgment more often than not.

... Maybe I'm just jealous. The lengths Sakuya goes to satisfy her and make her happy makes me want to pull my hair out! Why not me?!

Is it really that wrong to desire such adoration for thyself? To long for nights where the bed is not empty and there's this golden ring around your finger promising that each day won't just blur with the others? Love burns, sometimes like a fireplace in the first yué of the year, others like the sertões and caatingas where water may as well be perpetually boiling.

Sighing, I look at my plate, food left half-eaten. I don't feel like eating anymore. I leave it on the fence, one of the fairies would take it to the kitchen -- or maybe throw it to the skies to see how far it goes --, and returned to guarding the gates, the day now colorless, trying and failing to bane the cynical imagery of white hair and blue eyes on arms not mine

Standing still on the surface of the Lago Enevoado, I attack an opponent made of shadows, the water following my every move with iridescent afterimages, the action of the sun shining through the droplets. The representation of two thousand years of training courses through my body, leaves it shattering the air, which then moves water like tectonic plates.

Mind clearer, I compare this situation with that of two centuries ago with the infamous youkai das águas, Boto Rosa, and his infuriating attempts to drown me again and again in depths of lakes and ponds. All the pummeling he got will never be enough.

The ki saturates the air, muscles burn, and a final hammer motion of my right foot sends crashing waves in a spiral pattern with my body serving as epicenter; the ripples undulate and calm down within one breath of fresh air, combat euphoria turned focus. Centering myself with closed eyes, I recognize the simple yet fulfilling feeling of inner peace.

But it seems it was not meant to last, as I observed throughout the ages.

From the shore, the well of my affection and a somewhat surprise in Remi, an umbrella over her protecting her from death from above and a plastic white chair keeping her comfortable. Deep in my training, I missed the split second Sakuya took to prepare the landscape to fit perfectly the needs of our patroa. What got my attention was Remi's slow clapping and satisfied smile.

Pumping ki to my soles and walking over to them, Remi was the first to talk;

"My, my: as always, a great show, Meiling," the compliment was punctuated with a sip of her green beverage, Chimarrão, a rare pick of Sakuya when she determinates Remi wants something exquisite, unlike the usual blood and tea. "The moves, the energy, your hair; you could say you're the Youkai of the summer, and I wouldn't suspect a thing."

I spare a moment to stare at Sakuya, nodding with a smile, before addressing Remi; "Thanks, Remi. We could ask Yuuka. I have a feeling she'd spot the differences easily."

Remi puffs her cheeks elegantly–the latter is a must. All you do, do with 110% of you; "Do you maintain contact with the Bruxa?"

Even if uncalled for, I take a guarding pose by Remi's other side, the pint-sized vampire now flanked by a former legendary Vampire Hunter and a Dragon Warrior, the Lago Enevoado the object of our appreciation. The imagery is quite funny, "Her green thumb helps a lot with keeping track of all the species and subspecies in our gardens. And it's quite cute how she reacts to other countries' flowers."

Remi stares at the lake as if trying to stab it. If it was alive, it would recoil in fear. Sakuya is quick and precise in offering the metal straw to alleviate the patroa's mood, and it works. Remi and other youkai getting too close to what is 'hers' always generates a reaction of this caliber and, albeit adorable, has consequences–bloody ones–, so better change the subject.

"Enjoying the day?" I ask.

"I was enjoying your fighting movements. Each so strong and precise, enough to blow up a human like a balloon," she sighs. "Sometimes Danmaku can be so tiresome: flashy, yet with no punch to back it." The double-edged knife of Spellcard Duels. No one dies, but pai amado, when you see Master Spark fifteen times in the same week, it loses the appeal... "Oh, would you two duel for me? No Danmaku, only physical." It wasn't a question.

And Sakuya had three knives in between her fingers.

One ki explosion in my soles and I flickered to the surface of the lake, awaiting the criada with an expectant smile. I won't lie, duels with Sakuya are thrilling: sharing our natural energies and tangling them in a sizzling tango makes my heart ache in need! Fewer clothes and this dance has another name.

Each step was accompanied by subtle time stops, making the water she walked on still; "Ready, Meiling? I know I am." The criada provoked, smile a knife on its own.

"For you, always."

And we fought, and we danced, and Jesus, I love her. Each throw a trap concealing another trap, movements trickery and slashes an invitation for overconfidence followed by a quick and terminal fall. I may judge Remi, but even I hate drawn-out boredom; and the feeling of getting physical, hitting knives out of the air, moving constantly not to dodge pellets of light, but cold prata and iron is just...

Glorious.

But a CQC duel against me? The outcome was set before it started, but I added some flair to it, sweeping her feet in a flash and pinning her to the time-stopped water, holding each wrist firmly, looming over her like a husband on a nuptial night. She gasped, red, but smiled anyway.

"... Another loss for me?"

"Another loss for you."

Remi was clapping; Sakuya blinked, now on her side, escaping mine again. Like always.
