After about six years of false starts and "extended breaks," I just completed RRTK in 46 days.

I've tried so many different approaches to Japanese without ever reaching any degree of fluency and came back around to RRTK so many times, but never did I actually finish it. On July 31 of this year, I started it yet again, at a rate of 50 new characters per day.

Today, I learned the final character in the deck.

I feel like I've scaled a mountain. After years and years of worrying that I couldn't do it, thinking there was something wrong with me, thinking that I just didn't have enough self-discipline to get it done...I've finally done it.

I know there's still a lot of work ahead of me and that RRTK on its own is not the end, or even the most critical piece. It's gonna take some more drilling before I even fully have everything internalized. Yet, it still feels amazing to have completed it after all this time. For the first time ever, I have a decent foundation to build on and confidence that I can actually do it.

I could ramble on and on about this and about all the experiences I've had, but I won't. I just wanted to celebrate my accomplishment with the rest of you here, and also sort of introduce myself with the hope of being more active around here in the future.　よろしくお願いします！

Semi-OT Blogpost about Anki, Kanjis, Radicals, and Pattern Recognition

I used Anki to study for a university exam. The exam in question had nothing to do with language learning. Most of it was pure memorization, but some parts required real understanding.
On the first day, I tackled 60 new cards in just 2 hours.
The next day, I reviewed those 60 cards, and I passed all 60.
It turns out, learning new stuff is way easier when it's got a familiar structure.
So, here's the plan: I'm gonna start learning radicals. I'm 3.5k vocab words deep into learning Japanese, and the biggest roadblock is that kanjis just look like a jumble of random lines to me. Most of my mistakes aren't from forgetting, but from mixing up similar-looking kanjis.
I'm hoping this will boost my memory because new vocab I see in the wild will start looking a bit familiar, even if only by a bit.
What I really liked about learning Spanish was guessing what an unknown word could mean. Will I be able to guess Kanji meanings/readings if I know all radicals?

onyomi readings quite often, meanings you'll maybe get a clue, like⺡being water related

you dont need to learn radicals to be able to do those things though, it comes naturally with learning vocab and seeing the similarities too

I'm able to connect meaning to these random lines, but I do not look at radicals or the Kanji itself. I just look at the entire word and connect the shape of the entire word to the vocabulary. It feels very inefficient and is prone to mistakes when two words look similar.

Is there a consensus on anki settings?
New cards before, after or mixed with reviews?
What learning steps should I use?
What relearning steps should I use?
What should the "new interval" (ex: fail a card with an interval of 25 days with new interval of 0.25, after relearning card, it will have interval of 5 days rather than reset all the way to 1 day with new interval of 0) be?
Should I retire cards after they hit a certain max interval? What interval?
I doubt there is any sort of consensus on all of these questions, but do any of them have any widely agreed upon changes? The only once I currently have changed from the default is doing new cards after reviews and also having the new interval set to 0.20.
