I have been studying Japanese for almost 8 years now, and I have been living in Japan for 4. I would consider myself very close to being fluent in spoken communication. I learnt most of the language, hiragana, katakana and Third-Year kanji before my injury. However, I am still mostly illiterate, aside from the kanji with which I am presented every day, because I cannot read the more advanced N2-N1 level kanji. Despite the use of tutors, textbooks, mneumonics, apps, and other methods I am thus far seemingly unable to learn new kanji due to my short-term memory issues.

I am looking for people who may have any ideas to a solution, or indeed a similar experience, and whom would like to discuss the struggles of trying to learn these cryptic characters with a deficiency in their mental capacity, or memory.

People will often say to just "read more", but I've always been curious, do they mean just reading the text (with the help of furigana) even if you don't understand the text, or do they mean you should read while also looking up everything you don't know? I used an app Kakugo, that is pretty much just flashcard style thing that can get kanji either by meaning, reading, of reverse those
it was reasonably good enough to get some kanji hammered in, but what else is there?

As an alternative I was thinking, I have this jisho app in my PC, that I can also tag kanji and words for similar flashcard review, but instead of just bashing through as flashcard meant to do
I instead force myself to handwrite at least one line for each kanji

I've learned 15 words a day for 50 days which worked pretty well, felt like I'm recognising a lot of words in anime & writings, but now I've reached a bit of an impasse. summer heat brainrot and other interests are cutting into potential studying time, would need to spend like 1:00-1:30 every day to stay ontop of vocabs. Several hours of uncompressed audio multiplies by 9 channels, multiplied by about 12 different languages = a ridiculous amount of disc space.
