I have been studying Japanese for almost 8 years now, and I have been living in Japan for 4. I would consider myself very close to being fluent in spoken communication. I learnt most of the language, hiragana, katakana and Third-Year kanji before my injury. However, I am still mostly illiterate, aside from the kanji with which I am presented every day, because I cannot read the more advanced N2-N1 level kanji. Despite the use of tutors, textbooks, mneumonics, apps, and other methods I am thus far seemingly unable to learn new kanji due to my short-term memory issues.

I am looking for people who may have any ideas to a solution, or indeed a similar experience, and whom would like to discuss the struggles of trying to learn these cryptic characters with a deficiency in their mental capacity, or memory.

Many thanks for your interest.

One camp is telling me, "Tolerate ambiguity. You don't need to understand every single grammar point or lookup every word. Your brain will naturally and subconsciously pick it up over time"
The other camp says, "Do not white noise. Look up every single word and grammar point you don't understand. The only reason you shouldn't constantly look things up is if you will get so bored you will stop reading. This is the most efficient way, so do as much as you are willing to tolerate."
So, how much should I look up words and grammar while immersing? Should I "tolerate ambiguity", or is that just "white noising" and "tolerating ambiguity" is pointless?

maybe I just don't understand the term "white noising" then. When I think of "not making a concerted effort to read" I think of someone who isn't looking up words and grammar points. Someone who reads a sentence or hears a line and thinks, "this probably means this. I could look it up and get the actual meaning but I probably correctly guessed the meaning from the context, even if I don't know exactly how the grammar works or what the vocab means exactly"
Is that white noising?

J-E and J-J dictionaries can be used in tandem, but the most important qualities which are rarely mentioned are nuances and usage (e.g. when to use 払う over 支払う, or 取得 vs 獲得, 尋ねる vs 聞く vs 訊く, etc.). Dictionaries often fail to explain either.

"tolerating ambiguity" applies even when you look everything up, because a quick lookup doesn't guarantee you'll understand everything. there's always going to be a point at which you move on to the next sentence.
you have to develop your own judgment. if you're a beginner, it's for example always okay to skim through some filler descriptions of food that list multiple obscure dishes. but if you're a food guy and you enjoy this shit, then you could also stop and look up every single one in google images, because why not?
the problem with whitenoising begins when you start spending too much time skipping shit and not enough time with comprehensible input. also you need to keep in mind that when you skip over things, you deprive yourself of context that could make the difference between the subsequent input being comprehensible or not.

People will often say to just "read more", but I've always been curious, do they mean just reading the text (with the help of furigana) even if you don't understand the text, or do they mean you should read while also looking up everything you don't know? I'm asking because this is recommended for beginners, but at that point you'd be looking up every single word and it'd just become tedious, but I could see the benefits in just reading even if you don't understand what's being said in the sense that you'll start noticing patterns and such, but I'm not sure if that's the idea

the answer to your question is right there in the guide:
>Once you have read through your chosen grammar guide, you are ready to start reading Japanese. While it’s not necessary, reading will be easier if you have reached 1000–2000 words in Core2K/6K at this point (you will have to look up a lot of words anyway, but having a basic vocabulary will make it less painful).

So, what do you guys recommend for some more indepth kanji studying?

I used an app Kakugo, that is pretty much just flashcard style thing that can get kanji either by meaning, reading, of reverse those
it was reasonably good enough to get some kanji hammered in, but what else is there?

As an alternative I was thinking, I have this jisho app in my PC, that I can also tag kanji and words for similar flashcard review, but instead of just bashing through as flashcard meant to do
I instead force myself to handwrite at least one line for each kanji
