I just finished Saya no Uta.
I actually picked it up thinking it to be some horror game, made the mistake of 'just playing a little' at nearly midnight, then ended up completing the entire damn thing, unable to put it down.

Only other VN i've done is Kana Little Sister.
Being a total newb to these, could you suggest some good translated ones to me? Not necessarily disturbing/melancholy, but a good story is vital.

Anything well-written and engrossing. I love a little slice of supernatural, awesome kick-in-the-balls plot twists, and characters who stay coherent and don't pull facepalm-worthy spirals due to bad writing. Less emphesis on erotic content and more on story. I can't really give a sharper picture here, because i've only just noticed VNs in general. I'm a blank page, so to speak.

Well I guess some of the basics would be works by Key (Clannad and Kanon), Type-Moon (Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night), Romeo Tanaka (Cross Channel and Family Project), and 07th Expansion (Higurashi and Umineko). Sharin no Kuni, which has been mentioned, is also excellent. For brick shitting twists I'd recommend Ever17 and Desire.

I wonder if anyone actually believes this, based on that one image that used to be up on Ammy's site, or if it's just a bunch of troll idiots. Admittedly I'm only a little less than halfway through SNI myself, but the only real "furry" thing I've seen is Ati. And even she would be a low-level furry. Most of the main characters so far have no furry-ness at all.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to build a patch yourself by saving down the scripts into a notepad from the wiki and inserting them. Be advised that the translation removed quite a few <k> commands accidentally (that's the 'click one for the next line'), so you have to use backlog once in a line.
Also, it really isn't long, I think it ended somewhere around introducing Lunaria.

True Love is a classic.

It's great to play through the first couple times au-naturel because the game is a riot, but after you've gotten all the girls you like once, use a FAQ. It's free-form nature means it's hard to see every scene by just playing naturally.

True Love was the first game for many of us, and it was pretty addictive at its time. It can still entertain anyone not biased against old games (not like there are many dating sims translated overall anyway).
Words Worth is actually pretty good among the gameplay eroges. I found it to be pretty funny at places, and the characters were entertaining.
Animamundi is pretty good if you can stand male romance. It has a really unique dark atmosphere, and the story was surprisingly good actually, like the parts with the Archangel vs Archdevil fight, or the entire chapter which plays in Hell, and I liked the sister character quite a lot. Also, the fabulous protagonist was great in my opinion. I'd recommend the uncensor patch though, which puts gore like this back.
