Try to avoid fighting Takeda if you don't think you're up to it, but if you're saving every time you do something it shouldn't be a problem to reload an earlier save if you do decide to take them on

Going with the non gourd countries first to build up is a decent strategy in the beginning. It honestly doesn't matter. I have a route I go by habit, it might be bad who knows.

Hara -> Ashikaga -> Miko institute -> Tokugawa -> Imagawa -> Asai Asakura -> Uesugi -> whatever

This is an easy order for all the routes and breaks gourds as late as possible. It won't get you end game points though. More of a cruise mode order.

Buying troops is a waste of money, never do it. It scales enemy countries up as well. You can buy troops for footmen though.

ok, there's an old Rance thread in the archive that started with this question but it never got a definite answer: Does anyone know for sure how you clear Ranmaru? The wiki is definitely wrong, as I got Katsuie to Trust and Ranmaru to 7/7 Trust and there's no event available. Some people have said you just have to wait (in that case, do I even need to bother raising her affection more after first reaching Trust?), some people have said they didn't even try and she cleared anyway.

It's quite annoying because I was trying to clear her fast to get the perma-buffs for her and Katsuie (I'll probably be using them on one squad and Kenshin/Senhime on another). It took long enough to get Katsuie to trust with bad luck on battle affection bonuses (didn't feel like wasting affection items on him), now I find out Ranmaru won't clear promptly like I expected.

from what I've read that only applies to second games, on a first game Takeda will conquer Houjou in just a few turns (and Uesugi events make it impossible to conquer them too fast). I'm playing my first game now and I just let Houjou fall (not that I had much choice); I'm already having to fight Iga and Uesugi at the same time because Iga got their turn first and DoW'ed me while I was briefly not at war. I realized I was fucked if I conquered Iga, so I'm just going to be holding them off for eternity while I conquer all I can, until either Takeda's or Akashi's gourd gets broken.

I pretty much just let the storyline push me into a series of wars rather than trying to manipulate things for maximum efficiency; I'd still be in basically the same situation anyway though, just that leaving Tenshi not quite destroyed would have been easier than Iga. Satisfaction points are different to Rance's affection points.
The top priority bonuses are Reinforcements usually, and the action fans.
For building a strong army, after you have gathered a few good units, +3 Affection is good to strengthen each unit individually.
If you have stocked lots of SAT quickly, you can make Rance a very good unit taking advantage of his specific bonuses(plus, they are high priority, so you should free up a few slots)
After that, depending on your army, +50 soldiers (if you have lots of footmen and units that are hard to raise numbers, like musketeers/canons).
Getting the items should be done at least once.

Deploy Suzume, Yamamoto and Rizna.
Have the ranged attackers hit Hara(to minimize his damage), Assasinate with Suzume (if she kills one footsoldier, it's the best), Defend with the Kiyoko always.
Have Senhime and Ranmaru attack.
Something like that for now.

Once I got past the main storyline stuff that kept blocking my early reinforcements, I've just been getting various initial purple events for random characters that I didn't feel like wasting a fan on, along with filler scenes with Rance/Kou/3G just chilling at the Oda castle. damn, I've been upping troop counts from the very beginning of the game, mainly on the cheaper units. I really have no idea how exactly the game handles it with regards to your opponents; I thought I noticed some scaling with the reinforcements/recruits, but that guy's screenshot above I see Kanami has a huge troop count too, I guess she just always starts with an abnormally large unit for a ninja?. And I just recruited Kenshin and Ai, and they have over 100 troops fewer than Ranmaru and Uruza.

I've had a merchant and an asset tech unit from almost the very start (and now have 3 asset techs), and I've been claiming all the levies (for the textbook if nothing else), so I've had plenty of gold to spend, and I assumed I should just keep adding more troops with it.

Attack with Senhime. At best, you'll weaken the warrior down a bit. At worst, one of the footsoldiers will have a crappier guard. Does Isoroku have whirlwind/sweeping fire yet? If not, just use the generic archer you started with.

Yeah. If you really want those attack/defense buffs, don't conquer any gourd nation to cut down on the story start-of-turn events.

As for the rest of your post, scaling isn't much of a concern unless you're playing 5-star or 2-star w/o bonuses. And yes, Kanami always starts with a large troop count, which is why she's the best unit to make a battle permit user short of capturing a 1000 ninja unit, which wouldn't be available in anything short of 5-star by the time you get her.

Well, his only alternative is to use the generic archer, who has a larger troop count but is slower than Rizna and has to deal with DEF rather than INT for damage purposes. Rizna should be able to kill nearly any back row unit, as well as severely damage the warrior. She also has an advantage on the footsoldiers since guard doesn't reduce magic attack damage.

Exact mechanic that determines it is unknown, but 'Guard change percentage' is irrelevant, and so is speed.
It may be an extra RNG, or maybe the one who 'rolled better' for the guard gets priority.
