hey /jp/ I'm going to be graduating in May with a BA in Japanese. I'm looking for a job translating manga or eroge, but I'm having a hard time. Any suggestions?

PROTIP: Do freelance translation work for a while so you have an example of your work. Translating a non-ero VN would be perfect, don't you think?

I've been wanting to play this. I'd translate it but I don't know anything about inserting the dialogue into the game.

You really have a BA in Japanese...?
Good luck bro, shit might get tough. Try to get a job with one of those "professional" translating teams like MangaGamer.

Although, to be honest I can barely read Higurashi in Japanese. It has so many words I don't understand.

Study Japanese more. Seriously, if you can't read Higurashi then you need to study more.

Speaking as some who got a BA in Japanese (yes, I know), it's pretty much good for stuff that just wants a college degree, any college degree, like some government jobs or law school, for example, or if you really have a firm command of the language and are willing to work your ass off for years earning almost nothing. Translators make shit, OP. You should know that now. And it doesn't sound like your skills are up to par anyway.

I got into Japanese because I wanted to bring Japanese culture to those that couldn't themselves.

>>And it doesn't sound like your skills are up to par anyway.

I blame my school for not telling me about AJATT.

Translators make jack shit money-wise, OP. You should know that ahead of time. And it doesn't sound like your skills are up to par at this point anyway.

I'm pretty sure most pro manga/anime translators start out doing scanlations/fansubs for free.

I thought translators for companies/governments make tons of money since they enable them to make deals that wouldnt be possible otherwise.

You'd better work on your English before you even bother with the Japanese.

Very few of those position exist, and they mostly want people who are completely fluent and have experience in the field. I think the problem people have is that they think that speaking Japanese is somehow special. It's really not anymore. It's not very difficult for to find someone who speaks it, or find a Japanese person who speaks enough English, so that's why you need to have something that makes you unique. If you studied engineering AND Japanese, for example, then you would have a lucrative (if boring) future doing technical translation. But vanilla Japanese is pretty taken care of at this point.

OP, the advice to practice translation is good. You're going to be a horrible, horrible translator when you first start- everyone is. Practice makes perfect, and no one wants to read stuff that sounds like it was run through a machine translator instead of an actual human being who knows what people talk like, so get out there and find some groups that need translators and volunteer. Do stuff you hate too, because you're going to be doing a lot of that if you ever become a professional.
