I'm sure the question has been asked a million times, but how can I be sure that I'm reading and understanding what's actually being said? There's been a few times I've misunderstood sentences I've read/heard. Can't remember any exactly off the top of my head but one time it was something like I didn't understand the nuance of a certain grammar point so using the direct english definition didn't help me

English is my second language and it happened so many times that I was certain that I understood certain words and sentences that I never looked up, but in the end it turned out that I got them completely wrong, and yet it didn't completely ruin my learning, and that "shock of being wrong the whole time" greatly helps you to never forget that sentence you've been wrong about for so long.

the original concept of "immersion" was to change your environment to simulate being a japanese child as much as possible. children are constantly exposed to the language but they aren't always 100% focused on it. so the whole ajatt thing was that you'd have japanese going on in the background when you're doing other shit and you can't focus on it. unfortunately retards diluted the term "immersion" to the point where it just means doing what every other advanced language learner (i.e. not terminal beginners who only take courses) had done already for decades.

There is just one problem with this strategy: children begin to rapidly lose the ability to pick up languages after the first or so year of their lives. In fact after they hit their teens it's effectively gg for them, after that point they have to struggle like the rest of us. So basically immersion is a fundamentally retarded strategy for an adult and what you are actually doing is plain regular basic bitch language practice with a fancy name.

dekinai reporting:
Why do people say writing and learning kanji is useless? I've been going through 2k just fine but I've reached a roadblock. I've been trying to figure out why I'm getting filtered by the same words over and over again and my conclusion is that I'm not actually memorizing that concrete form of the word but rather a vague general shape.
For example:
元気
空気
病気
I can get these relatively easily because of the uniqueness of the 気 element. Same for things that contain 電 or 分.
But now I'm getting into ones like 複雑, 経験, 経済 that just look like a mess of lines. There is no longer an easy distinct shape to recognize. Stumped, I reflected and realized that if I was told to write any of these, even the ones I can recognize instantly, I wouldn't be able to. If someone added an additional line or adjusted them slightly I wouldn't be able to tell. Everyone here can write G on a piece of paper and recognize the form of G, but for me with kanji it's like if someone wrote Ġ instead: with kanji I would think it was just G because I only pick up the vague shapes enough to make the association and move on, I don't actually have the comprehension that I do of the letter "G". So as they get more complex, the vague shape associations I have begin to blend together leading me to get the word completely wrong.
So why is handwriting/kanji often viewed as a waste of time? I've been thinking of making a seperate deck just for these complicated words and practicing stroke order just to get past this brick wall of never being able to memorize these.

pic related, these shitty fuckbox format kanji that have 4 things in them that all look the same and then one of those 4 things is made up of 4 more things

I don't know why everyone wants to live in Japan so badly. There's beautiful women everywhere, so you're more likely to give in to the sin of masturbation or other forms of sexual immorality. SAT research has shown that, unless the examinee's first attempt was marred by unusual circumstances that significantly affected their performance, improvements in score are limited to around 100 to 150 points. pulling up the numbers, that means someone scoring at the 99th percentile couldn't have had a "true" percentile lower than 97 to 98, regardless of how much they studied to get a 99th percentile score. unless you are from a very high socioeconomic stratum, you have to be at least 128 to 131 iq to get those scores on scholastic tests.

>"When I was twenty-eight and married, I remember thinking 'Isn't this strange? My brother's a genius, my sister's a Phi Beta Kappa, we all have the same parents, and I'm such a dummy.' I bought it. I really believed that." Much later, she discovered that the woman who had administered an IQ test to Bertie, Warren and Doris when they were eight, ten and twelve, respectively, was still alive. feeling quite down right now...
i'm a beginner, i get it, but i'm making no progress whatsoever, which in turn makes me want to try even less. i sit down everyday for 30 mins clicking through anki and i still don't have everything memorized after god knows how long i've been redoing the same few cards. it's like just memorizing isn't gonna work for me, man... i hate it; it's just no fun trying to learn them full well knowing you're gonna forget them again the next day
i don't remember learning english being that hard back in the day in school (i'm german)...
maybe i'm just not cut out for it. i'm dumb and lazy so i better quit instead of going at it half-assed like i've been doing these past few months. if i really wanted to learn japanese, i wouldn't be whining this hard and try to give up this easily.

No my memory is terrible, I actually started making 'codexes' of things because I'd forget them otherwise. If I had to give any tip it would be to close your eyes as the sentence is read out loud so you can practice listening. Alternatively you could turn the volume off and cover the translation to practice reading.
The first 200-300 cards were easy because of what I said in my post: The shapes were all large and distinct enough that it was no different than learning Hiragana. But once they started adding in ones with 4+ subkanji/radicals and subtle changes (会う, 合う) I get completely thrown off because I'd get it right and then it wouldn't appear for 10 days, but the slightly different version would appear and then I'd go "wait.. what?" until I manually searched through the deck to make sure I wasn't going insane.
I'm currently filtered by the kai/kei/kens/hyou/ji/ ones as I can't memorize the actual components and they just look the same really.
I'm still not sold on target-kanji studying being worthless. I think that the isolation in which they appear in anki makes it much harder than it should be. Even typing these out led me to recognize the patterns between them that I wouldn't have otherwise due to the multiple days in-between them in anki. I think I'm going to make a subdeck just for the ones I'm filtered by so I can recognize them and their components better.
