You won't find a satisfying answer here, it's a very specialist subject. Simply put, it's a series of bullet hell games with pretty patterns and flying girls, that have inspired a huge amount of fanmade material and an even larger following. It's a sort of cult franchise.

The character designs are appealing. Only a few clues as to personality and relations are given.
So the fans fill in the gaps. Since there's a large cast and varied characters it gives a lot of room to tell whatever story you want, or share your vision of their world.
