/jp/ was the one who told me to finish playing this series two years ago. I dropped AT1 at first.

This board must take responsibility.

Ar Tonelico is clearly cross-board material. The game is focused around the girls, the music, and the VN aspect. Gameplay comes behind all of these, even though the creators are trying to improve on that aspect.

As a result, the game has little appeal to people outside the culture who read VNs or play galge. Read the Famitsu reviews for this exact comment.

The plot and the cosmospheres are wonderful, especially if you've played the first and the second game, the game's end wraps up all the envents nicely and gives you a big sense of satisfaction.
The art is improved, the game renders at 1080p but I don't know if the images are native 1080 or upscaled from 720, in any case the backgrounds are full of details and colorful.
The 3D graphics are mediocre, Gust has still a long way to go to improve their engine, and while the PCs models are well done, NPCs are plain looking and lack details, plus I've seen some serious clipping and transparency issues.
The gameplay is a ripoff from the tales games, a bad ripoff, I appreciate their effort but it ends up being a boring spam of the same attacks over and over again, the R.A.H. system was good only on paper, often hyumas overlap themselves and turn the BGM into a mess, the Song Attacks are retarded, dealing with the whole nude crap was already enough, but the attacks look silly and uninspired, a big letdown considering how cool they looked in the other games, same goes for the EX attacks.
AT3 is still a good jrpg, but compared to AT2 it's a step backwards in terms of gameplay and a step foward in terms of story.
Imo AT2 > AT3 > AT1

Not at all. You can just read through one of the AT wikis for the background story. There are references that you'll only get if you've played one, but I played 2 without 1 and it was great. Jakuri has a lot of backstory that you should at least know a little of to enjoy her route though.

Ar Tonelico was always meant to be a Galge game and it succeeded at being one, the Heroines and their routes are the focus and the gameplay elements are just minor additions.

The games have been ctriticized repeteadly for having weak gameplay, but the gameplay was never the selling point either way.

I have posted this phrase a few times now but
I bet that if Ar Tonelico was translated by a more obscure group/company and developed/published by a more obscure company, developed for the PC and also being easily pirateable these debates would have never started.
