こんにちは! If you couldn't tell, I'm still a fledgling to learning Japanese. I'm kind of trying to learn on my own/teach myself; I don't really have any resources for traditional classes (to my knowledge) and only have loose understanding of French and Spanish.

I've always wanted to learn Japanese, but was incredibly intimidated by two "alphabets" and kanji. But, I took the plunge 80 days ago, subscribed to Duolingo Super and have been positively addicted to doing lessons everyday.

I understand I am barely scratching the surface; I can count to four and know some very basic introductions, departures, greetings, and time (at least I know 1-4 o'clock lol).

I feel that I have hiragana down pat and katagana is right around the corner for me. I have understanding of like...3 kanji characters lol

But, being new and having no in-person teacher, I am often left to my own devices with getting answers. I just discovered this thread and I'm excited to engage with the community :)

So my first question is about kanji; stroke order. Is this super super necessary when writing/learning Japanese/kanji? I see both sides of the argument. Just wanted to hear others' opinions.

The only thing I can think of is that there is some grammar I haven't heard about. Like の shifts the target that the verb modifies directly to the following word. What I mean is:
広がるの白の中心 - (広がるの白)の中心 - 中心 that is 広がる白
広がる白の中心 - 広がる(白の)中心 - 広がる中心 that is 白
But this is just my theory. Any link on this? As you can imagine, it's quite hard to google.

But the phrase その無限に広がる can directly modify 白 with the same meaning: その無限に広がる白. If you add の you just have two nouns next to each other, because the nominalizing の following a verb doesn't have the properties of the "possessive" の.
You could say that by adding の at the end of a verb (or an adjective), you're taking away that verb's ability to modify, instead of giving it to it.
I've finished quite a few games in Japanese already and nouns were always modified by nouns in plain or past form (including passive, progressive etc.), this is the first time I've seen something like this.
So, yes, I still don't get why の would need to be there. Or rather, how it could even be allowed to be there.
I'm still trying to google this, but the only thing I found is a topic on stackexchange where someone asks about this "verbのnoun pattern" and there are only two replies, both state that it's not grammatical and must be a typo.

Your continued use of "reading kanji" shows that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of learning Japanese. They're words, if you see a word you don't know, you look it up either by scrolling back up to the vocabulary list or using a website like Jisho.
