Can we talk about the flood of low-quality threads as of recent? I've noticed it and I'm sure you have too. Many are off-topic threads, but some consist of Touhou images, usually a very short sentence if any, and nothing to spur discussion. Of note, some are repeats of previously archived threads, and character threads get posted even if that character already has a thread. These threads often get posted in flurries, usually when certain generals that has reached bump limit are about to fall off the board.

What is the cause of this recent degradation in board quality, and what can be done about it?

>> No.44220284

Individually-induced fluctuations in the space-time continuum. (You) can try stopping if by meditating, but its not guaranteed to work.

>> No.44220365

This board has been mostly low-effort touhou boorudumps since it was split off /a/. The blatant raid threads are a separate matter, and in that respect this board has it easy compared to most. For about a year or so 2-3 distinct discord groups have cared a lot more about this site than the mods.

/vt/eens aside, I feel there are a lot of new posters that treat this site like all the boards are the same. At least it feels noticeably worse than say, a few years ago.
>what can be done about it?
Realistically, nothing. Moderation is never going to do anything about it, and really they shouldn't. It's not good, but it doesn't really break any rules. At best someone shits out yet another spin-off that gets a little activity for a short period then dies or turns into something else entirely.

it's summer so summerfags are here, simple as. doesn't help that reddit and twitter are dying so people are flooding from those websites without reading the site rules. I've been on this website for more than 10 years, this is a common occurance in summer. What is more concerning is /v/ tier garbage threads with greentext are posted here more now. Regardless, it's not like things are going to get better here.
Frankly, I hardly want to touch this board anymore. Not to say it's all bad, but the good stuff is really slow and tends to die quickly. Then you have imagedump threads where people just repost the same images over and over. Hell, half of the images' filenames tell you they were saved within the year. I won't talk much about the generals. I think those can be hit or miss, but thankfully most generals stay contained. Others, well... I think a certain general brought a lot of the new trash in a lot of threads.

>> No.44230725

>>44230683
I'll disagree with you on generals, not because of the slippery slope they are and not because I scream anytime there's something I even remotely dislike, but there is a LOT of leakage. Even ignoring the obvious thread that can't go more than 5 seconds after deletion without 5 more popping up, 3DPDshit constantly splits threads which only take up more and more boardspace with likely the exact same schizos they're presumably trying to get away from. If the hollowthreads are doing big hits of damage to the board the 3DPD ones are an endlessly growing cancerous mass.

How long have people been complaining about idolshit? It just goes to show that things won't get any better here in any regard.
I'm not too bothered by the lack of board space anyhow. What we do have isn't used well.

It has something to do with the last huge influx 4chan faced that brought in a whole civilization of zoomers, which was the start of the trend of having generals and daily threads for every topic that plague boards so they can have their own enclosed space of discord circlejerk instead of blending in with the board.
The exodus also brought in its own brand of mentally ill schizos, and in /jp/'s case it's not just from the invading 3DPD and vtuber generals. Some of those zoomers who came here for Touhou are autistic spergs who either try way too hard or deliberately forcing their own standard while clearly not familiar with the attitude and common interest of the board prior the influx, not to mention they probably also came from the similiarly toxic Touhou generals that sprung up on other boards.

2016 was a rough year for this site and mods should have permabanned all posters from that board every single day since it started, including from today until the heat death of the universe. But that's a more general thing than /jp/ specific. As for me 3DPD should have never been allowed here as it's constantly leaking and endlessly taking up space when it should be 2 threads at absolutely most (idolshit/seiyuushit). The only props I could give to the tumors were that I forgot the thread existed for years until they started leaking when the board got burned and flayed, which to me is basically what every general should be. Nowadays they've even got splits for posting 3DPD of the tumors they watch which feels like it goes against the entire point too?

The /v/tards are definitely the most confusing to me, because it's not like there's anything different from their Touhou threads that they could want from /jp/, when all they wanna do is genuinely get mad at eachother and butt heads except for the things that'd actually make some semblance of sense to do so like when comparing 1CC sizes. They've already got god knows how many threads or generals across the site that they can choose from, and instead of using /jp/ just to look at images or chu-chu they do weird thread copy-pasting and shitposting. I'll never understand how hard it is for people to just post normally about the things they like and maybe make a joke about fucking anon's gaphag waifu.

>>44247550
The thing with migrations is they never work and every group that does leave either A. visits both or B. believes themselves to be the only good group or C. is just an excuse for some anon to powertrip until his domain expires. There's already been like a dozen times this has happened in /jp/ history. The only ones I can ever say breaks the mold are the ones hyper-focused on a single thing and of those basically only Uboa and the CYOA board are still "active" last time I checked a year or so ago. And the worst part is they get nearly zero new blood nowadays; because people tend to forget that no matter how much you spin it even a simple textboard requires money to keep up. Stupid faggots making "hololive" threads is like me going on /g/ and making "Google" threads with posting about nothing except how amazing Gmail and Pixels are and why paying for Youtube Premium is an obligation. You'd have to be a grade A moron to obsess over fake anime girls running off of extremely shitty 10 year old mocap/animation software playing video games for the sole purpose of raking in as much money from lonely suicidals as possible.

Holo is one specific topic for the board that was made to contain all vtubers in general so it makes sense it's contained in one thread. Then again, it's not obligatory. I'm sure they chose to contain themselves inside Discord-tier general like that because they want it that way.
/jp/ was specifically made to contain Touhou and the posters decided to post Touhou all around along with other stuff and it has been that way without issue for as long as it stands. There's no reason for that to change.

Vtuber wasn't even a thing in 2015 so you can't say it's here "from the very start", but even if it wasn't an issue at the beginning, the sudden influx of posters and generals are certainly viewed as an issue. I'm not even saying it's purely the matter of quality. It's just the sudden migration of 3DPD generals followed by mass of vtuber posters caused almost every /jp/ status quo that the native held for so long to be broken instantly. Number of posters and post traffic, how the catalog looks, etc. You can say /jp/ got colonialized in seconds that it's not /jp/ anymore. It might be inconsequential but a lot of 4chan boards did care its status quo, community and identity before the huge influx changed them, and /jp/ was the longest to held its ground.

For the zombie threads, I think the best policy going forward will be to simply sage it, state the thread is a zombie thread and link to the post the text was taken from.
The earlier such a disclaimer can be posted in a zombie thread, the better. It will alert potential posters that OP isn't after a proper thread. The thread should then naturally fall back into the archive or be recycled.

Yes. And yes, I realize it means someone has to recognize the post which is why this would be a community effort. No one person can read all of /jp/ but surely one of its many posters will recognize an OP to be an earlier post.
Even with the frequent crossboarders, I still think it would do more good than not. I can't imagine /jp/sies will care to support such posts if they can avoid it.

Funny you mention /tg/, because there's been more and more backlash against "nogames" threads that encompass anything that doesn't explicitly mention a game/system. Specifically it's against kitchen sink threads like "What are your vampires like?" or "This is how I paladin". It's a gatekeeping reaction caused by tabletop becoming mainstream and drawing all sorts of tourists to the board who are equivalent to your average Touhou secondary. But at the same time it stifles creative brainstorming threads that have been there for a long time.
In terms of just Touhou, I feel like /jp/ could benefit from similar self-moderation like >>44256288. But without restraint it could easily devolve into spiteful anons labeling perfectly fine threads as zombie threads.

Another problem is low-effort and spam threads. But ultimately at least one is made daily and it normally goes out peacefully in a day or two, so I don't think we are doing too badly in self-moderating here. If anything the only problem is people bumping a bad thread just to say that it was a bad thread. I'm worried less about proving zombie threads and more about people taking advantage of that label, source or not. It's a great idea, but I've seen well intentioned self-moderation morph into no fun allowed enforcement or just used as shitposting material to derail otherwise good threads.
Maybe I'm just paranoid. Like you said this place is surprisingly decent at maintaining itself despite everything, so maybe /jp/sies could handle it better.

I don't think the actual label matters if someone were to spam it, which seems to be his concern. Whether we label them zombie threads, clone threads, repost threads, the abuser would just adapt to throwing that name onto innocent threads.

The ideal label would be something self-describing so someone with no idea can get clued in to what's going on. However it'll probably end up being whatever catches on naturally.

I think so long as you can link a post right around when it starts so people can't miss it and say "it was copied exactly from >>>[post]" then there's not an issue. There's an argument to be had if it was high school essay'd but I imagine the types of people to control C V their threads are dropouts who don't even know how to properly plagiarize to begin with.

Also stop calling it a zombie thread, just call it a clone or copypaste thread.

I'm talking about how the board functions not board culture, it's a bunch of disparate topics that don't have any overlap in any meaningful ways and as more topics fitting the board grows in popularity it further eradicates the niche topics this board is meant (at least according to the rules) facilitate and is likely bleeding out the board culture you seem to value so much
The more traffic the board drives the more bad and inflammatory the posting must be to grab attention, this is even more true when the topics covered are unrelated and by proxy fighting each other for relevance

If you're talking purely about /jp/'s function then nowadays it's weaboo /trash/; while it's right, you shouldn't say it, and we all fucking hate it? That's what it is according to the people who run the site. We get way too many threads moved here from all over the site, enough that I'd argue they'd rival porn boards if I actually knew what the statistics on that was and wasn't blowing that from my ass with a barely educated guess. We have threads that don't really belong here even ignoring ones that were here before alternatives were made, so on and so forth. But all of that is irrelevant in this context to the culture and content of the board, and the culture and content of the board being what this thread and the discussion in it is about; what anon can do to curb things like literally copy/pasted threads beyond the baseline of what's already being done.

It's a """"measure"""" against holospam. You know how they used to bump random nearly dead threads to get them above their general? It was done so that it would archive faster and they could get a new one up faster to post in. They even used to copy-paste posts from the same thread, or use some bot that would somehow autodelete the post 1 second after sending it. But the anti-bump measure remains, some threads that are close to falling off just do not get bumped.
It's random, I think, your next post might bump it, or you might need someone else to do it.
Now they are just straight up shitposting with new touhou threads or by copying old ones from the archive, which is something this very thread complains about.

Also, meido isn't taking measures against that because they apparently post there consistently enough to know their memes as mentioned earlier in the thread. Threads just get put into autosage sometimes for no reasons, and boardbumping has been a problem since before those threads even existed. It's probably just the unmentionable who spammed the board the other night.

No dude, I know how normal post deletion works. I'm just saying how it was, I've seen threads that were the first in the catalog with the last post being 7 hours ago. I think it had something to do with cancelling a post before sending it with a max size image or something, actually.
And I know that measure is a thing. I've seen threads that couldn't be bumped by my posts, but would be bumped by someone else's. I've bumped these threads after seeing that somebody else's post didn't work. One time I even bumped the thread myself after being randomly selected as incapable of that, like half an hour later. You can test it yourself if you can find a couple of moderately interesting threads that are about to be pushed off, 1 in 5 should be mysteriously impossible to bring back up.
It's specifically because the only mods we have here are all vtsimps that it was implemented in such a shitty way, to not actually disrupt their cycle. Take a look in the archive, the last holofag threads are consistently at 1500 posts because they spam posts like it's a twitch chat, of course they don't want to wait for it to naturally fall off of the board.

To be fair, the report function is weird. What possible case could you ever use "getting around spam/post filters"? Advertising or spambots already fall under the "hey guys check out my huge virus link at virus link dot com", and there's no function for reporting people who are obviously ban evading like S*llyfag. You just gotta trust mods to notice its a repeat offender which, which not a problem in this specific case, becomes one in the ones the threads talking about with copy&pasted posts where it's not immediately obvious. I've no doubt those folks doing it are also ban evaders.

>> No.44284540

Since a few posts have lamented the lack of posters using the sage function, I figure I'd leave a post explaining sage to any lurkers who wish to be good posters. In case the reason they don't sage is because they don't know rather than they don't care.

A sage is a reply that does not bump the thread. To sage, type "sage" (no quotes) in the Options field of the post form. Do not put it in the name field. This would be announcing a sage and is a reportable offense.

You should sage when responding to a thread that is off-topic to a board (such as to direct OP to a more relevant board), when your post is mostly irrelevant to the thread or when the thread doesn't need to be bumped (like if you're giving a definite answer to a straightforward technical question).

Before you sage, consider if it would be better to not reply. Your post may give someone else reason to reply and they may not sage. Sage is a tool of moderation available to the users but all a thread needs to stay alive is one unsaged response. This is why it's important to not feed the trolls.

What's there to say? Mods implemented board rules because of them making 3000+ post threads, some other mods argued for a board... and now it's been now about 3 years since it happened. And yet? They're still here. A mod, maybe not the same one but I sure do fucking hope so, presumably still frequent their threads given how there's examples of it from 2020, 2021, and 2022. I sure as shit don't doubt they're not still there in 2023, and you can bet your sweet ass they'll probably be there in 2024 too. There's not really much anyone can do about a thread with protection even when they do things like that, or the incident from a week or two where they made a literal 20+ threads purely out of spite for the board, except tell them to fuck off. But if a single mod is on their side then that's an open and closed discussion.

I've noticed in the past year alot of people using the quotation arrow while not quoting anybody, and barely anyone even asked them who they are quoting.
Lots of "character meta" threads as I've taken to calling them where a 2hu would complain about not having a thread in a while or she'd complain that her thread die. I'd much rather a thread start with interesting trivia about a character or any other hypothetical scenario than these uninspired character meta threads that don't provoke any discussions.
People making multiple threads of the same nature even though they're beating a dead horse. One example I could give are the "marry a 2hu" threads that went on for 4-5 threads IIRC until they stopped. Remaking a thread isn't gonna bring new discussion to the table.
I've also noticed a lot /jp/edos aren't calling out newfags for using buzzwords or any "meme" made after 2010 anymore.

>> No.44314654

>>44314058
I've seen enough people get called out, but it's not as much as it used to. Reason being that it doesn't work and more often then not just tanks thread quality when the newfag in question makes a bigger deal out of it or thinks they're being cute farming (you)s. Character/booru dump threads aren't that bad in the grand scheme of things since it's anons having fun and maybe some lore discussion happens. Sure they're low quality but hardly the worst thing on the board.
IMO a bigger problem is bad faith posters and arguments. There is nothing to talk about when their whole argument is /pol/ tier tranny this or leftist that; and you cant get rid of them since good meidos are extinct and trolling is their hobby. All they need to do in some cases is throw up some flame inducing twitter screenshot with no context, a couple buzzwords and off you go farming (you)s. Case in point: trying to talk about Ran's inclusion in TH19 is fruitless since someone will bring up Toby Fox as a boogyman and go on at length, derailing the thread as anons don't know how to ignore bait and extremely low quality posts.

If you ignore some obvious fast threads, this place has way less political/social shitflinging than most of the site. I feel like /jp/sies who take the bait aren't accustomed to seeing that type of posting here, so they either overreact or take it earnestly.
Plus new releases always attract crossboarders and their particular brand of shitposting, so it could just be them going at each other.

I would agree with you if /jp/ hadn't been a board that's existed for longer than 20% of the posters on this website have existed, including the time when they were still in their daddy's balls. There isn't an endless flood of people coming to /jp/, even since before our incident or the sitewide incident, to keep learning the same lesson of "stop fucking replying if someone smells like they come from the board that rhymes with lol". Sometimes anon is just retarded and wants to take it rather than ignorant of its existence.

Speaking of /mgt/ that reminds me of a couple of times there were porn dumps in the thread not to drive away the crossboarders, but to get the janny's attention because moderation ignores the thread even exists 99% of the time. The tactic isn't all too effective because janny is more likely to just focus on the porn and ignore everything else, but makes much more sense than smut in the OP.

Okay, hear me out. What if we make ERP threads? I'm not seeing any rule that states that ERP is against the rules, and as long as it's otaku-related (For example Touhou ERP) I believe it would be on-topic for this board. More importantly, this ERP could dissuade any disgusting crossboarder from /v/ or Reddit, Twitter, Discord or anywhere else to come here. This is exactly the reason why /v/hu threads should be banned on sight. They are not moderated at all and people are free to dump porn in that general, it spawns /b/ tier behavior. And someone always makes a new one minutes after archival/deletion if a mod manages to press the delete button once in a blue moon.
They absolutely need to have a thread up at all times to bait, shitpost, erp and spam in, it kinda reminds me of holotards here. And then those fags come here and act like it's normal for /jp/ too.

They need to just not have threads at all, you're retarded to imply containment should be the procedure rather than excision.

But also considering how mods still aren't deleting raid threads from people openly saying "we're going to raid /jp/ and force our tumor general there" in the example in >>44296277, your retarded idea would be the reality of things if they really wanted to force things that hard.

The problem is that /v/hu acts as a gateway. Every single faggot from the /v/ general understands that /jp/ is the "2hu board" and comes here to shitpost when their general has downtime. They won't migrate here, they're already here full time. Just look at the quality of the average thread.
My proposed solution is to force the issue by banning their threads. It used to be a thing, actually, mods used to delete /v/ touhou threads semi-often a year+ ago. Now they just let that pile of burning garbage stay, and don't even bother deleting porn. Not to mention the usual shitposting happening in there. It's basically the worst of /b/+[s4s] in terms of quality.
As for the raid, removing their echo chamber should be enough to discourage the typical amoeba brained /v/tard from posting their forced memes. Especially since those memes are really easily recognizable, and /jp/ is just too slow. In fact, I think most of them would just give up on touhou altogether, instead opting to latch onto whatever other popular shitposting crops up on their board next.

>and /jp/ is just too slow.
This, these tards are so addicted to posting it's piss-easy to notice them. If a thread gets more than 10 posts in 10 minutes, barring a direct discussion between anons, it's not /jp/sies making those posts.
