It's a non-linear film about how a seemingly decent teenagers can be strung along to do wild and heinous shit. They live bleak and hopeless lives irl, but find solace on the internet discussing their favorite pop artist, Lily Chou Chou.

Just watch it, it's a must watch film for these threads, honestly. There's 2 scenes in it that contain pretty objectionable imagery that I haven't seen attempted before or since.

It's also Yu Aoi's first film, which is neat.
Also it's the first film shot on the Sony HDW-F900 digital camera. So, even though it's old, if you can get a full res version it look absurdly clear.

It is a realistic story, Iwai Shunji didn’t try to make the characters idealistic or fill them with cartoonish troupes you probably thought you’d find in them. The characters are all people you definitely encountered in your life, you might even be one of them. I know I am. Even if you hated the characters because they are "buzzword", you still should admit that the storyline was phenomenal as Iwai delving deep down the psyches of these relatable youths. His trademark directing style and camerawork enhanced the atmosphere immensely, personally I was so absorbed the first time I watched it that I couldn’t believe it already ended by the time the credits rolled. Without a shadow of a doubt a masterpiece.

People being bad at life, loneliness, difficulty of connecting with others. It's best to watch it blind. If you like melancholic and atmospheric movies you will probably like it. It has in particular one of my favorite scenes in any piece of fiction, five minutes of pure raw human emotion. No elements of loudness or exaggeration, just really elegantly scripted with a very unique core idea I hadn't encountered before.

I love how good 'A Bride for Rip Van Winkle' was at capturing loneliness in the modern age and how jarring it is to make genuine connections online. I felt this film was an amalgam of every theme and idea Iwai Shunji has explored through his career until that point. There's everything from his previous works and they were constructed perfectly from start to finish. The characters' development in particular was topnotch.

'PiCNiC' is an absolutely beautiful film, like all of Iwai's works, really. No matter how harrowing or anguish-wrought its content is, there's a dreamlike magic imbued into its very blood. That adventure they sat upon was incredibly gripping, especially thanks to those rules they imposed on themselves regarding the walls. I love how the walls represent freedom in this film instead of confinement. How they're all portrayed as humans despite everyone else treating them as mental cases. It was so full of tragedy, empathy, and understanding of mental illness. The ending is one of the best things I've ever seen in cinema.
