It's the only one that's actually well written and with ACTUAL suspense and wonder of what the fuck is going on.
And the eventual explanation(warped viewpoint) is well implemented. In every other arc, it's superficial horror and over the top creepiness, with writing and character development taking a nosedive.

Obvious twin hijinks, craziness expressed only as 'kill who bothers me' and learning most characters are unlikable fags, are mostly the problem. The overall setting of Higurashi has it, it's not strictly belonging to the 'horror' genre. The writing becomes much more jumbled in later installments.

Start with the really shitty ones and work toward the good ones.

Even if it showed their flaws (which is a natural part of character development) it never made me hate them, but I guess that's up to opinion. Tatarigoroshi actually made me like Satoko and Keiichi more.

I never thought the writing in Higurashi was jumbled, unlike Umineko. I did think the later chapters had better pacing than Onikakushi though.
