44277480

I made a post about this last thread, but it was towards the very end:

I am working on a big project, and I need some good translators to check my work. It's been Machine Translated, and I bet it's going to look awful to anyone who is fluid with the language. Where would I find somebody who is interested in helping me pro-bono, ie students or people interested in gaming?
If need be, I can just release it as is and hope most of my audience just understand English well enough, but that's obviously not the ideal solution

>> No.44277553

>>44277480
Fuck off nobody wants to work for free on your shitty game

>> No.44277578

>>44277553
It's not a game actually, it's a chart.
I also looked into prices for actual translators(that do it for a living) and even attempting to pay someone would ruin me. Fuck that, people can google translate what I wrote for those prices.

What I did was write a 1-2 sentence summary of every game on my chart and then put whatever I wrote in ENG into DeepL. Problem is that there is over 300 entries, so that quickly added up, plus there is the wordy introduction as to what the fuck this chart is at the start.

Again, worst comes to worst I will just release it as is, but considering that a lot of Japanese will see it, it would be ideal for the grammar and text to be as good as they can be. Entries are nice and short, but their number can be a bit staggering for one person. That's why I mentioned a community, so that a few people could take a look and tell me right away if the machine spouted a bunch of useless garbage or not.

>> No.44277634

Wtf bros my retention gets better if I actually do anki daily instead of once every 2-3 days???
I'm still kinda slow as shit but it's wild that I missed half the cards I normally do, and those were the problem cards anyways
It's obvious that that's how srs works but I didn't think the improvement would be this noticeable lol

>> No.44277637

>>44277578
>but considering that a lot of Japanese will see it
Why would a lot of Japanese people see a random list some guy uploaded about 300 different games?

>> No.44277663

>>44277637
Simple, social media and actually interacting with them.
Rather ironically, my Japanese itself is rather non-existent. Due to poor communications with the guy who was supposed to be doing the heavy lifting on Graphic Design, I was forced to do more than I was supposed to, and that left little time to brush up on my Japanese(which with the time this project is taking, I definitely could have done well if I was given a heads up he would be unavailable for as long as he was. That was the plan, anyways).
As is, it's being pushed out the door, so Machine Translation is the best I can do at this timeframe. Unfortunate, hoping I can at least get some pointers if what I have is even usable or if text should just be in English for the time being.

Question to experienced VN readers.

When you reach a reading speed that is good enough to keep up with the pace of the vocals, do you think you should keep reading the lines?

I ask this because I recently realized that my reading speed now allows me to follow what the characters are saying, but reading their lines at the same time feels like "cheating", like watching anime/drama with the subtitles. It feels less like reading, but more like confirming visually what the characters are saying.

My problem might be that my listening got fairly worse than my reading. So maybe just listening the line, then reading it in case I didn't understand it, might be a good idea? Do any of you had a similar experience?

Why are you learning Japanese?

You’d be surprised how many people decide to do something as big as learning Japanese without knowing the answer to this question. I bet you 90% of people who start studying have no idea why they’re doing it (which… ahem… happens to be the same percentage of people who end up quitting, might I add). Now, when I say these people “don’t know why they’re learning Japanese” I’m also not counting generalities. Answers like “because it’s fun” and “because it’s cool” are okay for a little while, but they won’t hold out when the going gets tough. I’m looking for a specific answer…

I checked both the fan TL and official TL of pic related, but neither seems to fit for my purposes. (That being a fan comic that uses the phrase in a different situation). If needed, I could also source the page I'm thinking of.

Take a step back, let your brain really soak in the language you've already acquired, and then come back to learning new material when it's coming more naturally. When I've hit roadblocks in the past, I had to sit down and let my mind process the grammar and vocabulary I had already been trying to crowbar into it. Once I let it simmer for a few days, revising and reviewing in mornings and evenings, the new stuff suddenly began to feel simple, sometimes even natural, because it had a broader framework to slot into.

it wasn't a problem at all. language knowledge is mostly probabilistic until an advanced level where the probability of you getting most things wrong is so small that in practice it's 0%. but technically it's just guesses all the time, so even if your reliability for easy stuff is 99.9%, you're still bound to make a stupid mistake for 1 out of every 1000 words, which means they're guaranteed every reading session. the people who claim they never made dumb mistakes are EOPs.

>why does vocabulary have the highest correlation with g?
it just does in every factor analysis of intelligence tests, making it a useful proxy for *estimating* full-scale IQ.

>can't you just learn more words to increase your iq?
IQ tests with a verbal component sample only a few dozen words because they are built and statistically perfected to be incredibly efficient at maximizing rank discrimination through the smallest of changes in score, so you would have to expend tremendous effort to see improvements. if you artificially inflated your vocabulary through intense, deliberate study and then took a full IQ test, a psychologist would immediately notice your internal "ratios" conspicuously deviating from the meticulously calibrated standards since your vocabulary score would be significantly higher than expected given your performance on the rest of the test, on which you would do no better than you would have had you not studied. they would know you purposely do activities that specifically target vocabulary growth, and they wouldn't have to second guess that because they have, over several decades, extracted and verified extremely stable and robust correlations in virtually every randomized population sample between vocabulary scores on the test and both the total score on the test as well as scores on sub-tests corresponding to distinct, seemingly unrelated cognitive domains.

your full-scale IQ wouldn't be that much higher either since vocabulary alone only contributes a small part to the total score. quite awkward.

Having trouble with understanding まいる here. I know the sentence is basically "every time, everyone reacts the same way (surprised to see her in a bear costume)" but is it ま as in 間 (so 間 いる) or the word 参る (which I'm not familiar with, but just going off the definitions I have I don't see how it works here)

Was thinking 間 (ま) as in "pause" or "period of time" like like they react for a second when they see her. If it is 参る is it a humble form of 来る here? Like she's taking about her own action of coming/arriving (and that everyone has the same reaction when she does)

am currently on the JET program (1½ years and counting). My husband is back home, with a 13 hour time difference. We make it a point to call each other on video call at least once a day. Usually in my evening, when he wakes up for breakfast.

It works great. I do miss him a lot, though, and my vacations are spent visiting him (or vice-versa) rather than travelling Japan. But it's very doable.

And I could never have done this without his support and amazing encouragement! It does get lonely sometimes, but the daily video calls help. (I don't think this would have worked in the 90s lol)

So I've been learning Japanese for 2 and a half years now but recently have been discouraged and bored based on progress. I did Duolingo heavily for 5 months and realized it only takes you so far and then moved on to Anki for the rest of the time only using the Japanese Core 2000 Step 01 flashcards. I'd say I know tons of verbs, some adjectives, and some nouns and that's far as I have come. I am very frustrated with the outcome of barely being able to speak. I never really understood how or what to sentence mine in the first place so thats why I only do those flash cards. Does anyone know of any other methods for learning Japanese or is it really just sentencing mining (which I don't understand)? Also does reading books or manga help?

>> No.44294211

>>44294205
From what you wrote it sounds like you've learnt a bunch of vocab but haven't spent much time on grammar, am I right? There's been this myth spread that you don't need to study grammar and just immersing and mining enough sentences is enough for you to naturally absorb it. But Japanese grammar is so drastically different to English grammar and unintuitive to native English speakers that this approach doesn't really work. I would recommend working though a beginners textbook like Genki to build a solid foundation of grammar.

The YouTube channel CureDolly also has some really good explanations of how Japanese grammar works, if you can get past the slightly grating voice.

r.e. sentence mining; the idea is that you pick sentences that you understand fully except for one word or grammar point. The problem is at the beginning there's almost nothing that you understand, and you're unable to discern for yourself what's worth learning now and what can be left for later, so I wouldn't really recommend unguided sentence mining as a beginner. It's also not the only way to learn Japanese.

The best way to learn how to speak Japanese is to speak it. I'd recommend getting on HelloTalk and finding a speaking partner, or spend money and get a tutor on iTalki.

I did HelloTalk for a bit before JET and then on JET I was forced to interpret for new coworkers who knew no Japanese at all. That forced talking actually helped me a ton, and my Japanese abilities skyrocketed. I'm still just N3 level, but I can have simple conversations with Japanese people and got along well with my coworkers and students.
